My invention relates to a filling mechanism of the type which is adapted to dispose measured amounts of liquid, such as syrup, in bottles, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein de-. scribed and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a filling mechanism in which the capacity of the measuring means may be varied to the slightest fraction of an ounce.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described by means of which desired quantities of the liquid may be disposed in each bottle, irrespective of the temperature effect upon the liquid.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction, durable and efficient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a liquid tank 1 having a trough or depressed portion 2 which is provided with an open ing 3. A guide or supporting rod 4 is slidably disposed in a bushing 5 which extends through the bottom of the tank 1. A bell 6 for re ceiving the neck of a bottle which is'indicated at 7 is rigidly mounted upon the lower end of the guide rod 4. A compression spring 8 is disposed concentric with the guide rod 4 and bears at one end upon the bell 6 and at the other end upon thebushing5. An arm 9 in the form of a triangular block is secured to the upper end of the guide rod 4: by means of a nut lO.

trough or depressed portion 2. The body portion of the measuring cup is rigidly secured to the arm 9 by a hollow tube 13 which is provided with longitudinally extending slots 14 therein. An adjusting rod 15 is slidably disposed in the tubular member 13 and is provided with a fork-shaped member 16 at its lower end. The fork-shaped member is receivable in an annular groove 17 in the lower extremity of the bottom portion 12. The upper portion of the adjusting rod 15 is provided with threads 18 and a reduced threaded portion 19. The reduced portion 19 forms a shoulder 20 upon the upper portion of the adjusting rod 15. A sleeve 21 having an annular groove 22 adjacent one end thereof is provided with an internally threaded portion 23 which is adapted to receive the threads 18 of the adjusting rod 15. A retaining fork 24 has one end adapted to be received in the annular groove 22 and the other end rigidly held against displacement between the arm 9 and the nut 10. The sleeve 21 is provided with external threads 26 which are adapted to receive the internal threads of an adjusting nut 27. An indicating wheel 28 is disposed concentric with the sleeve 21 and is held against longitudinal displacement by the adjusting nut 27. The indicating wheel 28 is provided with indicating lines 28. A set screw 29 extends through the adjusting nut 27 and is in engagement with the indicating wheel 28 and the threads 26. The set screw 29 acts as a key to prevent rotation of the nut 27, and locks the indicating wheel 28 against rotation. An in dicating collar 30 is disposed concentric with the reduced portion 19 and provided with circumferentially disposed markings 31 equally spaced upon the outer surface thereof. The collar 30 is held against displacement by a thumb nut 32.
A liquid valve tube 33 is rigidly secured to the tank 1 and extends upwardly through a bushing 34 in the bottom portion 12 to a point above the level of a liquid 35. This liquid is kept at the predetermined level by means not shown. The lower portion of the liquid valve tank.
Let us assume that the operator wishes to place three ounces of the liquid 35 into the bottles 7. The measuring cup, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, is set to receive just three ounces of the liquid. As the bottle 7 is moved upwardly, by means not shown, the bottle en-,
gages with the bell 6, thus raising the bell, the guide rod l, the arm 9, and the measuring cup upwardly to a point where the upper extremity of the measuring cup will be positioned above the level of the liquid 35. During this upward movement of the measuring cup, the full capacity which is three ounces of the liquid will be received in the measuring cup. lVhen the measuring cup has reached its uppermost position, the drip check 36 will have been raised from the liquid valve tube 33 and the upper extremity of the liquid valve tube will be adjacent the upper extremity of the bushing 34:. This allows the liquid which has been retained in the measuring cup to flow downwardly through the tube 33 into the bottle 7. The tapering surface of the bottom portion 12 aids theliquid in its travel toward the tube 33 and permits all the liquid to pass from the measuring cup.
In filling machines of this type, a certain length of time is given for the passing of the liquid from the measuring cup into the bottle. This time remains the same, irrespective of the surrounding temperature and the specific gravity of the syrup. However, the surrounding temperature tends to affect the flow of the liquid from the measuring cup. That is, during cold weather, the liquid -flows slower than in warm or hot weather. To allow for the slowness of the flow of the liquid during a relatively low temperature, or with heavy syrup the bottom portion 12 may be moved downwardly by rotating the adjust-- ing nut 27 in a counter-clock vise direction, looking from the top of the nut. After this adjustment and the cup has been made to allow the desired three ounces of liquid to pass into the bottle, the device may be reset to register correctly. In resetting the device, the set screw 29 is made loose sufficient to permit the indicating wheel 28 to be rotated so as to bring the indicating point thereupon bearing the marking 0 into alignment with the indicating line 25. As the bottle 7 again moves downwardly, the measuring cup is also moved downwardly by the force of the spring 8, and the drip check 36 engages with the upper end of the liquid valve tube 33 for preventing any liquid which should remain in the tube from passing therefrom until another bottle is brought into alignment with the tube.
Let us assume that the operator wishes to place a little more than three ounces of liquid within the bottle. By rotating the adjusting nut 27 in a counter-clockwise direction until the next marking upon the. indicating wheel is brought into alignment with the line 25, the
bottom portion 12 of the measuring cup is moved downwardly a sufficient distance to allow of an ounce more liquid to be received in the measuring cup. By rotating the adjusting nut f a revolution in a counter-clockwise direction,the bottom portion 12 is moved downwardly a suiilcient distance to allow of an ounce more liquid to enterthe measurmined quantities by given movements of the adjusting nut. The markings 31 upon the collar 30 aid the operator in adjusting the measuring cup; as for instance, if the upper extremity of the sleeve 21 is disposed a slight distance beneath the circular line adjacent 1 the marking 4, it is obvious that the cup is set to receive a little less than four ounces of the liquid 35. By glancing at the indicating wheel, the operator will be informed as to the amount under four ounces the measuring cup will receive. 7
The purpose of the screw 38 which extends into a threaded opening in the arm 9 is to lock the indicating wheel 28 and the adjusting nut 27 against rotation when they are set in a desired position. i
I claim:
1. A. device of the type described comprising a tank adapted to hold a liquid, said liquid maintaining a predetermined level in said tank, a liquid valve tube rigidly secured to said tank and having oneend extending into said tank to a point above the level of said liquid, the other end of said liquid valve tube being adapted to enter a bottle, a measuring cup disposed concentric with said liquid valve tube in said tank, said measuring cup comprising a cylindrical body portion and a tapering bottom portion, an arm, a tubular member rigidly secured at one end to said arm and at the other end to said cylindrical body portion, an adjusting rod slidably disposed in said tubular member and provided with a fork-shaped member at the lower end thereof for holding said bottom portion of said measiio uring cup, an adjusting nut disposed concentric with said adjusting rod for moving said adjusting rod and said bottom portion with respect to said tubular member and said cylindrical body portion, a guide rod extending through said tank and secured at its upper end to said arm, means secured to the lower end of said guide rod and adapted to ngage with an upwardly moving bottle for moving said measuring cup to a point above the liquid level in said tank, whereby the liquid retained in said measuring cup may flow through said liquid valve tube into the bottle, means disposed concentric with said guide rod for moving said measuring cup downwardly when the bottle has been lowered, and means carried by said arm'for engaging with said liquid valve tube for preventing any liquid which remains in said tube from passing therefrom while said measuring cup is in the lowermost position.
2. A device of the type described comprising a tank adapted to hold a liquid, said liquid maintaining a predetermined level in said tank, a liquid valve tube rigidly secured to said tank and having one end extending into said tank to a point above the level of said liquid, the other end of said liquid valve tube being adapted to enter a bottle, a measuring cup disposed concentric with said liquid valve tube and comprising a cylindrical body portion and a tapering bottom portion slidably disposed in said body portion, a guide rod extending through said tank, a supporting arm disposed in said tank and rigidly secured to said guide rod, a tubular member for securing said body portion to said arm, an adjusting rod slidably disposed in said tubular member, a fork rigidly secured to said adjusting nod for supporting said tapering bottom portion, means for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion, and means secured to said guide rod for engaging with said bottle during an upward movement thereof for moving said measuring cup to a point above the level of the liquid in said tank.
3. In a device of the type described, a measuring cup comprising a cylindrical body portion, a tapering bottom portion slidably disposed in said body portion, means for holding said body portion, an adjusting rod, means secured to said adjusting rod for holding s i-l bottom portion, said adjusting rod having a threaded portion, a sleeve disposed concentric with said threaded portion and provided with an internally threaded portion adapted to engage therewith, an indicating wheel disposed concentric with said sleeve, an adjusting nut disposed concentric with said sleeve and secured thereto, means carried by said adjusting nut for rigidly holding said indicating wheel in adjusted position, a reduced port-ion integral with said adjusting rod, a collar having indicating lines disposed concentric with said reduced portion, and means for rigidly securing said collar to said reduced portion, said bottom portion being adapted to be moved within said body portion for varying the capacity of saidmeasuring cup by the rotation of said adjusting nut and said sleeve.-

A device of the type described comprising a measuring cup having a body portion, a bottom portion, means for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion, said means comprising an arm, a sleeve carried by said arm for supporting said body portion, and means extending through said sleeve for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion.

A device of the type described comprising a measuring cup having a body portion, a bottom portion, means for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion, said means comprising an arm, a sleeve carried by said arm and arranged to rigidlyhold said body portion, an adjusting rod movably disposed in said sleeve, means carried by one end of said adjusting rod for supporting said bottom portion, and means operatively connected to the other end of said adjusting rod for moving said adjusting rod and said bottom portion with respect to said body portion.

A device of the type described comprising a measuring cup having a body portion, a bottom portion, means for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion, said means comprising an arm, a sleeve carried by said arm and arranged to rigidly hold said body portion, an adjusting rod movably disposed in said sleeve, means carried by one end of said adjusting rod for supporting said bottom portion, means operatively connected to the other end of said adjusting rod for moving said adjusting rod and said bottom portion With respect to said body portion, and means carried by said adj usting rod for indicating the capacity of said measuring cup in the adjusted position.

A device of the type described com prising a measuring cup having a body portion, a bottom portion, means for moving said bottom portion with respect to said body portion, said means comprising an arm, a sleeve carried by said arm and arranged to rigidly hold said body portion, an adjusting rod movably disposed in said sleeve, means carried by one end oi said adjusting rod for supporting said bottom portion, means operatively connected to the other end of said adjusting rod for moving said adjusting rod and said bottom portion With respect to said body portion, means carried by said adjusting rod for indicatin the capacity of said measuring cup in the at justed position, and means for locking said movable parts in their adjusted positions.
