This invention relates to a chamfering attachment for chaplet making machines and has for its object to embody in such a machine a device by means of which the free ends of the chaplet stems are automatically beveled or chamfered prior to the discharge of the finished chaplets from the machine.
In the chaplet making machines ordinarily employed the stems of the chaplets are successively cut from a continuous length of wire and are riveted at regularly spaced points to a strip of sheet metal which strip is severed between successive stems. The cutting of the wire forming the stems and the riveting of the stems form a slight burr upon the outer .ends of the chaplet stems, and this burr interferes with the proper fit of the stems into the apertures of the pattern parts with which j they are used.
The'present invention provides automatic means forming a part of the chaplet machine by which the burrs are removed from each stem and a slight taper is formed on the ends of the stems to insure ease of insertion and accurate fit in the openings of'a pattern member. i
The following description and'accompanying drawings set forth in detailcertain means embodying invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting-but one of the various mechanical cases in which the principle of the invention maybe employed.

Referring to the accompanying drawingsa bed 1 and standards 2 extending upwardly from the bed at opposite sides thereof and having an eccentric shaft 3 journaled at its opposite ends therein adjacent the upper ends thereof. Shaft 3 is provided with an eccentric 1 which supports a reciprocating head 5 which is guided for movement vertically be tween the standards 2. The head 5 carries on its'under side a punch 6 and a riveting die 7 and cooperating with the head 5 there is a, block 8 secured upon the. bed'and adjacent the, rear end thereof, the block 8 having an aperture 9 in alignment with the punch 6 and in advance of aperture 10 through which wire may be fed. Adjacent the forward edge of the block 8 there is mounted a lower riveting die 11 which co-operates with the die 7 carried by the head 5 and adjacent the upper end of the aperture 10 there is a wire cutter 12 by means of which the wire is cut to the proper length for forming the chaplet stems. A sheet metal strip is fed forwardly over the block 8 and die 12 by means of a reciprocating feed arm 14 which is provided'with a head 15 upon which the strip rests and with a pivoted gripper 16 by means ofw-hich the strip is gripped 6 and die .7 therewith. The stroke of the feeder arm 14 is exactly equal to'the distance between. the apertures 9 and 10and'thc distance between the aperture 10 and the center of the die 7' is such that .upon each stroke of the feeder arm the strip-is advanced to position an aperture formed by the punch 6 in registry with the aperture 10 to permit the wire to be fed up through the strip and to position a stem between the riveting dies. A
suitable feed is'provided for the wire to cause the wire to be advanced. through the strip the length of a chaplet stem and the cutter 12 is so timed as tooperate immediately after the feed of the wire is completed. Upon the stroke ofthe head 5anaperture is formed in the strip '13 and a piece of wire is fed through an adjacent aperture and a stem is riveted tothe strip by means of the co-acting dies 7 and12. The Chaplet making machine so far described is old and well known and the actuating mechanism for the various feeds has not been shown, the feed devices, however, are timed in their operation with re spect to the operation of the head 5, being operated by suitable cams driven from the eccentric shaft, the eccentric shaft being provided with a bevel gear 17 at one end which meshes with abevel gear 18 uponthe upper end of a vertical shaft 19 which extends downwardly below the bed and drives the various cams for operating the strip feeder, the wire feeder and the strip cutter.
The severing of the wire by the cutter 12 and the operation of the dies 7 and 11 has a tendency to form a slight burr upon the upper ends of the stems 20 as indicated at 21 in Fig. 4. The purpose of the present invention is to provide in connection with the chaplet making machine, such as above described, a device by means of which the-burr at the upper end of the stem is removed and the stem is slightly pointed or tapered to facilitate its insertion into the openings of a pattern member.
In chaplet machines heretofore employed the sheet metal strip has been severed by means of a cutter attached directly to the reciprocating die'head. In the present invention, however, the cutter is spaced forwardly from the reciprocating head 5 and is separately mounted. A block 28 is secured to the bed forwardly of the die 12 and this block has attached to the forward edge there of a stationary cutter blade 24. At the forward end of the block 28 there is formed a vertical guide way 25 in which is mounted a head 26 which carries the cutter bar27 which co-operates with the fixed bar 24 to shear the strip 18 midway between the attached stems 21. The head 26'is suspended by means of links 28 from a transverse shaft 29 support-- ed in brackets 80 carried by the standards 2. The links 28 have elongated slots 81 at their upper ends through which the shaft 29 extends and are provided with inwardly projecting pins 82 which engage with the cam slots 38 formed on the outer faces of a disk 84 fixed to one end of the shaft and a gear 85 fixed to the opposite end of theshaft. Rotation of the shaft 29 causes the link 28 and head 26 to be raised and lowered during each revolution of the shaft and means isprovided for so driving the shaft 29 as to properly time the operationof the cutter head. To this end the gear meshes with a small gear 86 fixed to a transverse drive shaft87 and the gear 86 also meshes with a large gear 88 fixed to the eccentric shaft 8, the gears 85 and .88 are preferably of the same pitch diameter so that the-rotation of the shaft 29 is at the same speed as the rotation of the shaft 8 and the cam slots 88 are so disposed with respect to the eccentric disk 4 that a chaplet is severed from the strip during each interval between the feed movements of the strip or at approximately the same time that the head 5 is in engaging position with respect to the strip.
The chamfering device which'is interposed between the reciprocating head 5 and the cutter head 26 will now be described. A gear housing-89 is rigidlymounted on a crossbar 40 extending between opposite sides of the frame directly above the block 28 and journaled in this housing is :ahorizontal shaft 41 to which is fixed a helical gear 42 which meshes with a horizontally disposed helical gear 48 rotatably supported in the housing "and splined to a vertical shaft 44 which is mounted to slide upand down through the gear 48. The shaft 44 carries at its lower end a chamfering head 45 which is provided with a conical recess 46adapted to receive? 34 by means of the shaft 41 and gears 4225 and 48, the shaft 41 being drivenlby means of a pulley 48 atits outer end and a belt 49 which runs over the pulley 48 and over a large pulley 50 fixed to the drive shaft87. i
In order to enable the 'chamfering tool'to'i operate successively upon the chaplet stems means is provided forautomatically lower ing the shaft 44 during intervals between successive feed movementsof the strip'18'and for elevating the shaft 44 and head 45 to per-- mit feed movements 'of the strip? Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I A I 1. The combination in a Chaplet making lowered into engagement with achaplet stem 1 along the length thereof, a reciprocating cutter spaced from the riveting head and operating in timed relation with respect thereto for severing the strip between successive stems, a rotary chamfering tool movably mounted between the riveting head and outter, means operating in timed relation with respect to the movements of the head and cutter for shifting said tool into engagement with a stem, and means for driving said tool.
2. The combination in a chaplet making machine of a bed, means for intermittently feeding a sheet metal strip along the bed, a reciprocating riveting head movable toward. and from the bed for attaching wire stems to the strip at regularly spaced intervals along the length thereof, a reciprocating cutter spaced from the riveting head and operating in timed relation with respect thereto for severing the strip between successive stems, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted bet-ween the head and cutter for movement toward and from the bed, a chamfering tool carried by said shaft, means for driving said shaft, and means operating in timed relation to the movements of said head and cutter for shifting said shaft.

The combination in a chaplet making machine of a bed, means for intermittently feeding a sheet metal strip along the bed, a reciprocable riveting head mounted for movement toward and fromthe bed, a shaft having an eccentric for actuating said head, a drive shaft geared to said eccentric shaft, a reciprocable cutter spaced from said head and movable toward and from the bed, a chamfering tool mounted between the cutter and head for movement toward and from the bed, and means driven from said drive shaft for actuating said cutter and chamfering tool.

In a chaplet making machine, means for intermittently feeding a sheet metal strip, means for piercing said strip to provide openings therein, means for feeding a continuous wire through said openings, means for severing said wire to provide stems, means for riveting sald stems to said strip, means for chamfering sald stems, and meansfor severing said strip between adjacent stems.
