This invention relates to label attaching devices, and specifically to an improvement in the attaching device shown and described in U. S. Patent No. 1,636,432 issued to me July 19, 1927; and the object of the invention is to facilitate applying the label-attaching device, and generally to render the same more convenient and efficient in operation.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rubber stamp embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of .a label-attaching device; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of a label.
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of a portion of a stamp body and a label attaching device connected thereto in inoperative relation; and Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4, showing the parts in engaged relation.
In said drawing, the reference numeral 10 represents the body of a rubber stamp; 9 represents a label, and 11 represents a device for attaching the label to the body. Said body is provided in its periphery with a pair of par- 5 allel narrow grooves or slots 12, the planes of which are disposed in substantially right angiilar relation to such periphery at the respective slots. In a side wall of each slot 12 is provided a recess 14, see Figs. 4 and 5, located below a shoulder or ledge 15 which is parallel with the peripheral surface of the body at the opening of the respective slot.
The label 9 consists of a strip of paper or an equivalent having imprinted or otherwise 5 marked thereon identification matter. Said label is preferably of a width equal to or less than the distance between the slots 12.
The label attaching device, or holder, 11 consists of a strip of transparent celluloid or other suitable transparent material which is formed to provide a central web portion 18 with down turned side flanges 20.
The lower portions 20 are, moreover, severally made of a double thickness by folding the flanges upwardly upon themselves to provide folds 21 which terminate in edges 22 parallel with the under surface of the web portion 18 and at a distance therefrom to enable the fold edges 22 engaging the ledges 15 of the respective slots 12 when a label holding device is in its operative relation, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
The holder 11 above described is formed to have its flanges 20 or the folds 21, preferably both the flanges and folds, flare outwardly from the perpendicular with respect to the plane of the web.
In operation, a label 9 is placed upon the body 10 of hand stamp, between the slots 12 thereof. The holder 11 is then placed over the label to straddle the same and is thus forced downwardly to have the folded flanges pushed into the respective slots until the foldedges 22 are in or below the plane of the ledges 15, whereupon the resiliency of the holder material causes the normally flaring folds 21 to be urged outwardly into engagement with the ledges 15. Instead of applying the label and its holderto the body, however, as above explained, it is oftentimes desirable to apply the holder to the body above a temporary spacing strip 23 of a thickness greater than that of the label (see Fig. 4) so that the edges of the folds are held out of engageable relation with the ledges 15. The spacing strip is then withdrawn longitudinally and in its stead the label is inserted and isthereupon secured in place by pushing downwardly the holder into position to have the folds 21 engaged below the respective ledges 22.
The essence of the invention resides in the self locking characteristic of the label holder for making engagement with abutments provided in the stamp body.
What I claim, is,-
1. The combination with an article having two parallel grooves arranged in substantially right angularly relation to the face of said article, each of said grooves including a recess 90 located below a ledge provided in the outer wall at one side of the respective groove, of a transparent strip of material having side flanges arranged to be inserted in the article grooves, said flanges being folded upon themselves to provide outer folds adapted to enter said recesses for snapping engagement with the respective ledges.
2. The combination with an .article having two grooves arranged in substantially par-i allel planes, each of said grooves including a recess located below a ledge provided in a side Wall of the respective groove, of a transparent strip of material having side flanges arranged to be inserted in the article grooves, said flanges being folded upon themselves to provide outer folds adapted to enter said recesses, the upwardly projecting edges of said outer folds being adapted for locking engagement against the respective ledges.
