Application filed Februaryg, 1928. Serial 1 To.'252,972.
This invention relates to looks.
In the ordinary construction of door closures provided with spring latches, a knob is generally provided, spaced from the edge of said door. Where it is desired to mountan additional means for locking the door fixedly in position, as, tor instance, bolts moving parallel to the vertical. edge of the door, it is desirable to have said bolt-s positioned close to the edge of the door in order to avoid contact with said knob, and also to facilitate the locking action. To carry out this purpose, the present invention provides a l-ock-' mg means wherein a bolt 18 pro ected into engagement with a strike, and additional bolt means is positioned to extend along the vertical edge of a door, together with novel actuating means for the last mentioned bolts, operated by the first. named bolt.
An object of the invention is to provide a simplified locking mechanism, capable of projecting a plurality of bolts in several directions, so assembled that operating means for some of the bolts may be located at any point within a lock casing, within certain limits, in order that such bolts may,'if de' sired, be positioned along an edge of a closure.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel lock means for projecting and locking bolts, operated by a single key of the ordinary type, without the necessity of using an auxiliary locking mechanism.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock adapted to project bolts in a plurality of directions, said lock being adapted for mounting in any one of a plurality of positions without. change in the mechanism thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a lock for projecting lockbolts in opposite directions, said bolts being in substantially the same plane, yet being capable of manufacture without bending, and withan ordinary key may be used for its actuation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a locking device for projecting a plurality of bolts, in which a single key both projects and locks these bolts in position.
Other objects of this invention will in part betobvious and in part hereinafter pointed on The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts whichwill be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of ap-' plication will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various, possible-illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Fig. 4c is a plan view or" the lock casing and its keeper, with the top covering of the casing removed to illustrate the internal assembly thereof.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4, showing a modification of the invention, with parts of the actuating mechanism shown in Figs. 1 to 4 omitted. i
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5, illustrating the bolts and connection means set up therein. i
Fig. 7- is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which the lock is set up for use in conjunction with apparatus of the type disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 207,587, filed July 22nd, 1927.
On the drawings, a lock comprises a lock casing C adapted for co-operation with a strike or keeperK, said casing being formed in any suitable manner, as by casting,'so as to provide the body portion 14 and a cover portion 16. Said bodyportion comprises a lull base 10 and an upstanding peripheral wall 12, which may be open at the front end 11 thereof. Body portion 14 may have integrally formed therewith the upstanding lugs 18, 20, adjacent the end 11, said lugs being formed with the semi-circular cut-outs 22. Corresponding lugs 19, 21, are provided to extend from cover 16 and have cut outs 23 provided therein to mate with cut outs 22 and form circular bearing openings. A bolt 24 is receivable through said cut-outs and has one end connected in any suitable manner, or made integral with, a cross head 26, said cross head co-operating in a manner hereinafter described, with a device for imparting reciprocal motion thereto. The free end of bolt 24 is received in opening 28, which may be formed in a lug 30 integral with the base 10 of body portion 14 adjacent end 11 thereof, or in a wall whichmay extend across said frontend of the lock casing C.
A strike or keeper Kmay likewise be made of a single casting, having a projecting portion 34, formed with an opening 36 transversely entending therethrough. In that construction wherein thelock casing C ends with a wallat end 11 through which a bolt 24 e2:- tends, projecting portion 34 will be positioned eXternall'yof casing C, so that, when casing C is moved into position adjacent strike K, and bolt 24 is projecting through opening 28 said bolt will enter opening 36 to engagethe strike. However, in the preferable construction, as shownon the drawing, base 10 of the casing may'beformed to receive portion 84 therewithin by having an extension 88 made integral with base 10, said extension being provided with an upstanding wall 40 which connects with the wall 12 of casing C. A slot 44 is formed in extension 38 and is designed to receive portion 34 therethrough, so that said portion will be positioned and retained relative to bolt 24, in such mannerthat said bolt may properly engage with opening 36 to lockthe parts together when the bolt is projected.
Carried on bolt 24 and retained between the upstanding lugs 18, 20, is a gear 46 which has a through passage 48 formed transverse the plane of rotation 01" said gear for receiving said bolt with which it has a substantially smooth sliding lit. A pin 50 extends inwardly from gear 46 into passage 48 and is received in a helical groove 5.2,cutin the surface of bolt 24. Said gear is adapted to have drive engagement-with bars 54, 56, the en'- gaged ends of which are reduced in section, as at 58, said reduced ends having raclrteeth cut therein for cooperation with the teeth of gear 46. It will thus be seen that, on reciprocation of bolt 24 into and out of engagement with strike K, pin 50 will be actuated by groove 52 to'slide bars 5'4 and 56transversely of casing C. The free ends of bars 54 and 56 may 'be formed as bolts 'to be suitably received in properly positioned engagement members, as, for instance, sockets provided in the upper cross-piece and the threshold of a doorway. In order to provide against accidental or unauthorized separation or" said rack ends 58 from gear 46, said ends are formed with enlarged portion 62, adapted to IEngage gear 46 to limit movements of said ars.
If desired, the offset 64 may be within casing (has shown in the drawings. However, 'wiere such otlset is housed within casing C, a recess 66 in bar 56 for receivingthe rack'end 58 of bar 54 must be provided. To properly guide bars 54, 56, in addition to the walls of the upstanding lugs 18, 20, there is provided the projection 68 formed about an opening 69 'in wall 12 of casing C. In making up bars 5-4, 56 it is found desirable, because of the-ditferen't sizes of doors with which these bars are adapted to cooperate, to make the bars sectional. A portion 70 of the bars 54, 56 is adapted for retention entirely within casing C, or projection 68, at all times. Additional bars? 2 may be secured to portion 70 by having countersunk rivets applied, or by a screw connection. In the latter case, a countersunk screw is used and has its head positioned so that it will ride on the side of the lock secured to the closure. A straight rivet connection may be used where the projection 68 is provided; in such construction, said projection protects the joint between portion 7 O and bar 72 against unauthorized tampering. How ever, where the countersunk rivets or screws are used, projection 68 may be eliminated and guides 7 4, 76 on either side of bars 54, 56 may be cast integral with body portion 14.
As shown on the drawings, cross head 26 is formed with an ofiset guide 7 8 having an extending lug 80 received in a longitudinal slot 82 in the base 10 of body portion 14. As additional guide means, a bearing point '84 is formed on guide 78 and rides along the guide surface 86 integrally formed with base 10 so that said cross head is substantially guided for rectilinear motion.
Guide 7 8 is provided with a pin 88 extending laterally therefrom and having pivotally mounted thereon a locking finger 90. Said finger, at one end, is formed with a "double acting catch 92 having the engaging surfaces 94, 96,for purposes hereinafter appearin g. The other end ofsai'd catch isprovided with an inturnedarm'93, received in a recess 95 formed in guide 78. Said inturned arm has a cam surface 98 adapted to be engaged either by a crank arm 100 secured to the barrel 102 of the key operated by device 104 or by a similar arm 101 actuated either by a finger knob or key actuated means mounted through the side of door opposite barrel 102.
Said key operated device may be of any ordinary type, preferably having the pintumbler mechanism commonly in use, and being provided with a face plate 106 received flush on the cover portion therefor. It will be seen that upon insertion of a key (not shown) through opening 109 and then turn ing said key, barrel 102 and its attached arm 100 will be rotated so that said arm will contact cam surface 98 and rock the locking finger 90 on its pivot pin 88 to release catch 92, as hereinafter appears.
A coil spring 110, wound around pin 88 and having engagement with hearing point 84 and a portion of finger 90, will normally tend to return said finger into a position in which catch 92 will engage a part of stop piece 112 to lock movement of guide 78 at a certain point. Stop piece 112 preferably formed integral with base 10 is positioned so that, when cross head 26 is retracted as shown in Fig. 4 and bolt 24 is housed entirely within opening 28 and does not extend outwardly therefrom, surface 94 of catch 92 will have engagement with one edge 114 of piece 112. When cross head 26 has been projected, in a manner here-- inafter appearing, so that bolt 24 fully enopening 28, the other surface 96 of the catch will engage an edge 116 at the other end of slide 112. It will thus be seen that finger 90 with its engaging surfaces positively locks the bolt 24 and its connected devices against reciprocation at the limits of their movement.
To actuate cross head 26 in order to move bolt 24 into engaging position, the arm 101 rotated so that surface 94 is disengaged from edge 114, finger 90 being moved against the action of spring 110. Continued movement of arm 101 will bring it into contact with cam surface 120 formed as a part of cross head 26 and supply sufiicient force to propel cross head. 26 and its connected devices, so that bolt 24 and bars 54, 56, will be pro jected into engagement with their respective parts. Finally. the end 118 of crank arm 101 will slide off surface 120 and release the cam 98 so that finger 90 under action of spring 110, will be moved to bring surface 96 into engagement with edge 116.
In retraction of cross head 26, arm 101 is rotated reversely, and end 118 is brought into contact with surface 98 to depress finger 90 and release catch 92. Continued application of force to arm 101 brings it into engagement with the surface 122 so that cross head 26 will be moved back. Arm 100 will finally ride over surface 122 to clear arm surface 98,
catch 92 riding along stop piece 112 in the meantime. Catch 92 will now engage edge e is provided with an indent 136 into which end 118 co-operates to notify the user that it has arrived at the full position, whether open or closed.
In the use of the lock illustrated in Fig. 7, there is shown a lock casing C mounted to project the bars 54 and 56, the bar 56 being received through the guide bracket 150 and having pivoted intermediately thereon the two bolts 152, 154, of the type shown and tie scribed in my aforesaid co-pending application. The guide 150 is provided with the spring retention means 156 for bolt 154, said means also constituting a fulcrum for bolt 152. Suitable brackets 158 and springs 160 co-operate with the bars 54, 56 to substantial- 1v relieve the key actuated bolt in look casing C of the weight of the bars 54, 56.
In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and assembled as illustrated, wherein the invention is applied to the use of short bolts for conjunction with the ordinary door strike, the rack ends 162, 164, are guided by the upstanding port-ions 166, 168 formed integral with the casing base. Extending substantially perpendicular to the ends 162, 164 are the connectors 170 from which project the bolt ends 172. These bolt ends are positioned to be received in openings 17 4 in the strike lugs 17 6, here shown as projected substantially perpendicularly to the plane of lug 178, which is adapted to co-operate with the bolt 24. The base 180 of lock casing 182 is shown as pro vided with additional openings 184 to receive the lugs 17 6 therethrough in the same manner as portion 34 is received within opening 44. It will thus be seen that the three bolts will nultaneously eo-operate with strike 186, substantially in a manner snnllar to the operation of the bolts and bars shown in lugs. 1 to 4.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a ing drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
