The angle iron members 5 and 6 are so formed that their vertical legs extend beyond the horizontal legs and the extending ends of these horizontal legs are bent back on themselves as shown at 13 thereby to make a better finish.

Associated with the back are one or more retaining members to which the leaves or groups of leaves are detachably secured. The retaining members shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are in the form of strips 14; of cardboard or metal or any other suitably stiff material. Each retaining member is adapted to receive a leaf-holding member indicated generally at 15. Each leaf-holding member is formed with a pocket 16 extending from one end to the other thereof, which pocket open at both ends and is of a size to receive the retaining member 14.

The retaining members 14 are secured to the back by means of pins or rods 17 which extend from one angle iron member to the other, each pin or rod having a head 18 which engages the outside of one of the angle iron members and having at its other end a clamp ing screw 19 screw-threaded therein, the head of which engages the other clamping member. These pins 17 extend through apertures 20 formed in the retaining members. Either pin can be readily removed thus detachably connecting the corresponding end of the retaining member from the back by simply unscrewing the screw 19 and when the pin is thus removed then the retaining members may be swung away from the back about the other pin 17. This is the condition which is illustrated in Fig. 1. When one of the pins 17 is removed the corresponding end of each retaining member 14 is detached or disconnected from the back and a leaf-holding member may then be slipped onto or removed from any one of the re taining members. After the leaf-holding members have been thus applied to the retaining members the latter may be again locked to the back reinserting the pins 17 through the apertures 20 of the retaining members.

The leaf-holding members may be constructed to hold a single leaf 21 or group of such leaves. In Fig. 1 each of the two holders that are illustrated are shown as having a group of leaves secured thereto.

Figs. 7 and 8 show different types of leaf holders which may be employed. In Fig. 7 the leaf holder is made by taking a strip of cloth or paper and folding it back on itself and then stitching the two sides together along the line 22. This will produce the pocket 16 which extends from one end to the other of the holder and will also provide two flaps 23 between which the leaf or leaves may be secured. These flaps may be gummed or provided with adhesive as shown at 24: so that the leaves may be readily attached thereto, or may be provided with apertures 71 to receive a lacing or a paper fastener or any other similar device for securing the leaves to the flaps.

In Fig. 8 a form of leaf holder is shown 'which is constructed to have a considerable number of leaves secured thereto. This holdor is indicated at 15 and it is formed by folding a strip of cloth so as to form the pocket 16 and then securing a plurality of flaps 23 to the pocket by means of stitching or other suitable fastening devices 25. These flaps may be gnmmed as shown at 24. and may also be provided with apertures 71 so that the leaves can be fastened thereto either adhesively or by means of a lacing or other fastening device. After the strip is folded the edges may be sewed together as shown at 26 to form the pocket 16.

Each holder with the leaf or leaves at tached thereto comprises'a unit which maybe readily placed in the binder or removed therefrom independently of any other units.

In some lines of business it often happens that a person is dealing with several. differcnt subjects and has several separate sheets relating to each subject. In such case it is possible to secure all the sheets relating to any one subject to a holder and then to place the different holders each with its own group of sheets or leaves, in the binder. The group of sheets or leaves relating to any one subject can then be readily removed from the binder whenever desired or may be replaced therein and this is done without any possibility that any of the separate sheets belonging to any subject matter will be lost because all of such sheets or leaves are secured to the same holder.

I may, if desired, provide the back with a removable title card which will indicate the contents of the binder. This title card is illustrated at 27 in Fig. 9 and it is adapted to be slipped into a pocket 28 formed in the back, said pocket having the sight opening 29 through which the title on the card 27 may be read. The pocket 28 is open at one end as shown at 30 to permit the title card 27 to be inserted or removed.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a different embodiment of the invention wherein the back and covers of the binder are formed from one integral sheet which is folded centrally. This makes a flexible cover, the two cover portions being indicated at 31, 32 and the back portion being indicated at 33. This back portion has studs 34 at each end to which the retaining members are secured, each studhaving a head 35 at one end and a screw 36 removably screwed into it at the other end.

I have shown in Figs. 5 and 10 a retaining member 37 in the form of wire, such retaining member being bent at both ends to form loops 38 through which the studs 34 pass. These wire retaining members are inserted through the pockets 16 as above described and they function in the same Way that the retaining members 14 do. The construction of the studs 34 is such that either stud may be removed thus disconnecting one end of the retainer from the cover thereby to permit a leaf holder to be applied thereto or removed therefrom.

In a temporary binder, the combination with a cover having a channeLshaped back, of a pivot pin extending from one side to the other of the back at one end thereof, a plurality of retaining members pivoted on said pivot pin, said retaining members each having an aperture at its free end, a headed locking stud extending through one side of the back and to the other side, the head of the stud engaging the outer face of the firstnamed side and the end of the stud abutting the inner face of the other side, a screw eX- tending through the other side and screwthreaded into the end of the stud, said stud being adapted to pass through the apertures in the retaining members thereby to detachably lock them in place, and a plurality of independent leaf-holding members each having a pocket extending from one end to the other thereof and of a size to freely receive a retaining member, each leaf-holding memher having gummed flaps to which leaves may be secured and being removable from the binder independently of other leaf-holding members.
