FOLDING EUENI'TUEE;
Application led August 5, 1927. Serial No. 210,736.
This invention relates to folding furniture.
In many small apartments and the like, screens as well as tables are essential, the screen being employed in many instances to shield the cooking quarters from the dining quarters, and because of the restricted space it becomes essential to limit the household furnishings to a minimum and ut1- lize each piece of furniture for as many purposes as possible. c
The general object of this invention is to provide a combination table and'screen with a View to conserving space, which de vice is simple in construction, attractive in appearance whether serving as a table or screen, and which is so designed as to en.- able it to be folded into compact form when not in use.
Other objects and advantages ot the invention will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying'drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the device adjusted to serve as a table;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the devicey adjusted'to serve as a screen; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device as viewed from the rear in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a fragmental view of the device as it appears when collapsed for storage and viewed from that side to which the legs are attached; Figure 5 is an edge elevation of the device as viewed from the right in Figure 4; Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 6-'6 of Figure 4; Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view taken through one of the double acting hinges at right angles to the joints thereof; and Figure 8 is a modified form of the device in which the folding sections are of equalsize and are adapted to assume a slightly ydifferent relation to each other than the foldable sections of the device shown in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive.
Referring to Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, the numeral 10 indicates a middle section, the back of which as shown in Figure 3 is provided with an intermediate separator strip or rib 11 which divides the middle section into two substantially equal areas, thus giv` ing the eiiect of two panels or two intermediate sections instead ofone. (This section 10 is of a convenient size to beused To each ofthe parallel longitudinal edgesy or margins roflthe middle section 1O -fis`y hinged a leaf or wing section 13, having substantially the area of one-half of the middle section, the hinges 14 being preferably `of a well known double acting type which will permit the wing sections 13 to be folded into their positions shown in Figures l, 4, 5 and 6, parallel to and at one side of the main section 10," ormoved from such folded positions to their respective extended` positions at an angleto the main section 10,
as shown in Figure 2 when it is desired to use the device as a screen. u
Hingedfto each of the ywing sectionsy 13,
adjacent their respective points; of hinged connection with the main section 10, areffolding legsl provided with folding braces 16 of any suitable type which are adapted to* be extended when 1 the legs are moved' to table supporting positions, as shown in Figure-1, and whichareadapted 'to fold up about their, respectiveintermediate pivotal points 17 Whenthe legs are collapsed,fas shown most clearly in Figures 2' and 4.
When the device is employedas a table, as
tions with respect to the middle section 10 by a pair of bolts 18 slidably` connected to shown in Figure l, or when it is collapsed n for storage, kas shown in Figure 4, the wing f sections 13 are locked in their folded posii one of the wing sections 13 by yokes 19 and adapted to be moved in under-corresponding yokes 19 carried by the other wing section 13. These bolts form effective means for securing the wing sections 13 in their respective folded positions, and are of such a nature that they may be readily moved to unlock the wing sections when it is desired to extend them to their respective screen ico forming positions, as shown in Figures 2 and Referring to Figure 8, the device shown therein is made up of a middle section and a pair of wing sections 13', all of Which sections are of the same area and are adapted to be folded intov a Ystacked relation when the device is to be used as a table or When such device is to be storedv away. This modified form of thedevice further differs from the device shown in Figures 1 to 7 inelusive in that thev legs 15 are all hinged to one section, this being the lowermost section 13 as shown in Figure 8. The legs 15 are carried at kthe respective corners of the section 13 `to which lthey arehinged, and are held in theirl extended positions by folding braces 16 of the type described in connection with the device shown in Figure 1 to'7 inclusive, whereby they may be readily folded down upon the wing section 13 to which they are connected, when it is desired to store the device or when it is desired to move the sections 13 to their extended posif tions, corresponding to the extended posi tions ofthe sections 13 shown in Figure 2. As in the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 7 inclusive, the hinges 14',
which are employed to connect the sections 13 .to themiddle section 10', are preferably of the type which will permit `the sections 13 to be folded to either one side or `the other of the middle section 10 as desired, when the device is placed on end and lemployed as a screen.
It Will be -understoodvthat changes and modifications may be made in the constructions shown and above particularly described y withoutdeparting from the spirit of the in- 40k vention or the scope of the following claim. What is claimed is: A combination yscreen and table comprising a main table top section having'two parallel side edges, a leaf section hinged to leach of said side edges, a rib on the underside and centrally disposed of said main section, each .of said leaf sections adapted tov swing on their respective hinges to a position beneath said main section and contacting said rib, means to lock said leaf sections in said position, and legs pivoted to said leaf .sections and adapted to support'said leaf sections and said main top section in said position. f
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature to this specification.
