This invention relates to improvements in sectional barriers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character composed of plates or sections provided with means for detachably connecting them together whereby the sections or plates may be connected together end to end in adequate number to provide a barrier for use in arresting the progress of locusts and like pests.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel means of connecting the sections ofthe barrier together which is of such simple form as to permit economical manufacture and assure convenience in assembling of the sections or in taking them apart, when occasion requires.

In the accompanying drawing wherein an approved embodiment of the invention is illustrated Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a barrier constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the overlapping ends of two adjacent plates;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section through the tongue and slot connection between the plates;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in side elevation showing one of the tongues and slots coacting therewith;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation similar to Fig. 1 of a modification of the invention in which the tongue is disposed horizontally instead of vertically as in Fig. 1;

Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section through a modified form of tongue and slot connection shown in Fig. 4.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 4 indicates one of the plates constituting the sectional barrier or fence which, as will be understood, may vary in number according to the length of the barrier it is desired to provide. An adjacent section of the barrier constituted by a second plate 1 is shown with its end overlapping the end of the first section or plate 4, and the several sections are suitably supported upon the ground in an upright vertical position.

The other plate 1 is provided with tongues 5 which are struck out from the material of the plate and are offset laterally at the base, portion so that the body of the tongue coin cides and is in registration with the opening defined by the formation of the tongue.

The terminal of the tongue being displaced laterally from the body of the plate 1 may be, conveniently entered in the slot 2, and the portion of the plate 4 in which the slot is formed is upset to present a hump-shaped form as indicated at 3, such hump-shaped portion being received in the opening of the, plate 1 defined by the formation of the tongue 5. Thus, the body of the tongue 5 engages the outer surface of the plate 4, and maintains the hump-shaped portion 3 in position in the opening in the plate 1 and, effectively maintains both plates in position.

In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and ,5 the construction of the tongue is identically the same as that shown in Figs. 1-3 with the exception that the tongue 5, instead of being disposed vertically and necessitating relatively vertical and lateral movement of the plates 1 and 4 to cause engagement of the tongue within the slot 2, is, in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, disposed horizontally so that in the latter case relative longitudinal movement of the plates 1 and 4 causes insertion or withdrawal of the tongues with respect to the slots.

What I claim is:

In a sectional fence, a pair of plates having their adjacent ends overlapped and form ing adjacent fence sections, the overlapped edge of one of said plates being provided with an upset hump-shaped portion and slot located at one side ofsaid hump-shaped portion, a tongue struck out of the material of the overlapping end of the other plate and defining an opening in the plate, and having the base portion vthereof offset, the body of the tongue lying in spaced relation to the plate and coinciding and in registration with said opening, said tongue being adapted to pass through the slot to bring the humpperpendicularly to" shaped portion of the first mentioned plate into the opening in the other plate, the body of the tongue engaging the portion of the first mentioned plate overlying the opening to maintain the said plates in position.
