MINE CAR.

This invention relates to mine cars, and more particularly to mine cars having floors formed with a plurality of dumping doors which control the locks of adjacent doors,
and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved hinging means for dumping doors. of mine cars of the type described which causes the door to be shifted bodily during its opening and closing movements,
and it is also an object of this .invention to provide a lock for dumping doors of mine cars of the type described which will be operated to release and locking positions to control the operation of one door by the bodily shifting of an adjacent door during its opening and closing movements.
With these and other objects in view,- as will appear more fully hereinafter, the invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangementof the parts, all as Wlll be more fully herein set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

The mine car shown in the drawings comprises a frame consisting of longitudinalsills l and end sills 2 carrying sides 3 and ends 4 .a trunnion 28 and a'pinion 30, while on the and mounted upon wheelsfi fixed upon axles 8 journaled in journal boxes 10 attached to the longitudinal sills 1. The floor of the car shown comprises a plurality of dumping doors 12, 14 and 16, the door 12 being pivotally supported upon hinges 18 attached to the end sill and controlled by a latch 20 0perated by the door 14. The door 14 is in turn controlled b a latch 20 operated by the door 16 which is in turn controlled by a latch 22 operated by any suitable means as by a track ramp (not shown).
The doors 14 and 16 are mounted in identical manner and the description will be confined to themounting of one of the doors. Considering the door 14, it is provided at its hinged edge with hinge members 24 having attaching flanges 26 by which the hinge members are attached to the body of the door. The hinge members 24 project outwardly beyondthe edge of the door and have laterally projecting portions formed integral therewith, the laterally projecting portions comprising on one side of the hinge member other side of the hinge member 24 it comprises a journal portion 32. The hinge members 24 are arranged so that the trunnions 28 project outwardly and engage guides 34 formed inte a1 with the hinge brackets 36 attached to ti e sills 1. The hinge brackets 36 are formed with openings 38 through which the axles 8 extend.
Projecting inwardly from the inner faces of the ides ,34 are projections 40 which form su stantiall a rack and which cooperate with the teet of pinion 30 so as to shift the hinge members 24 and the door bodily along the guides 34 as the door is either raised orlowered. Extending between the sills 1 and slidably mounted upon the guides 34 is the latch 20 of the cross section shown in Fig. 5 for a portion of its length and at its ends formed with flat surfaces 44 which rest upon the guides 34, At its center, the latch 20 is formed with a reinforcing flange 45. Adjacent each end of the latch 20 is a bracket 46 secured to the latch 20 by rivets 48 and formed with an outwardly projleicting received the journal 32 of the hinge member 24, the arrangement being such that the journal 32 may rotate in the opening in the bracket 46; but as the door and binge member 24 are moved along the guides 34, the latch 20 will be drawn along the guides 34 with the door and hinge member 24. upper portion of the latch 20 is inclined as at 47 in Fig. 5 and provides a surface which, as shown in Fig. 2, engages beneath the free edge of the adjacent door when the doors are in the closed position. To stiffen the car frame, the outwardly projecting flanges 52 of the hinge brackets 36 are joined by a hood member 54vwhich also serves to protect the hinge and latch members.
The operation of the latch 22 by a suitable track device as the car moves forward will permit the door 16 to drop, rotating the hinge members 24 of that door and causing the door and hinge members to travel along the guides 34 of the hinge brackets 36, carrying with them the latch 20 attached to that door. Moving thefilatch 20 upon the guides 34 will withdraw the latch 20 from beneath the free edge of the door 14, permitting the door 14 to drop, which will in turn operate the latch member connected to the door 14 This will in turn withdraw the latch20 from beneath the free edge of the door 12. Should either of the doors 14 and 16 be swung to the extreme position shown in Fig. 8, the curved portion 31 of thehinge members 24 will engage the curved bottom 49 of the latch 20, raising the latch from the guides 34, and the inner edge of the door will engage the portions 51 of the hinge brackets. The doors are closed by a suitable mechanism, not shown, which restores the doors to closed position as the car moves forward beginning with the door 12. After the door 12 is raised, the door 14 is raised. Raising the-door 14 causes the hinge members 24 attached to that door to force the latch 20 beneath the free edge of the door 12. Similarly, raising the door 16 forces the latch 20 beneath the free edge of the door 14 and at the same time engages In the modified construction shown in Fig. 9, the hinge brackets 36 are formed with guides 34 as in the previous construction, but each guide is provided with but a single projection 40 which engages in a recess 60 formed in a circular member 62 on the hinge member 24. The member 62 takes the place of the pinion 30 of the other construction. In all other details, this modification is identical with the construction previously described and its operation is V the same.
While the preferred form of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described as it is obvious that various.
modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
I 1. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinges for said door, supporting tracks for said hinges and cooperating means on said tracks and hinges for shifting said hinges and door bodily upon the operation of said oor.
2. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinges for said door, supporting brackets for said hinges, projections on said brackets and means on said hinges engaging said projections to shift said hinge and door bodily upon the operation of said door.
3. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said hinge brackets and adapted to shift said door bodily upon operation of said door.
4. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported bysaid sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said brackets, cooperating means on said hinges and brackets to shift said hinge brackets supported by said sills, projections on' said hinge brackets, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported on said brackets, said hinges having recesses cooperating with said projections on said hinge brackets to shift said hinges and door bodily upon operation of said door.
6. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinge means for said door adapted to shift said door bodily upon the operation of said door, a second dumping door and a latch for said second door operated by the operation of said first door.
7. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinge means for said door adapted to shift said door bodily upon the operation of said door, a second dumping door and a latch for said second door operated upon the shifting of said first door.
8. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinge means for said door adapted to shift said door bodily upon the operation of said door, a second dumping door and a latch for said second door operated by said hinge means upon the operation of said first door.
9. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said hinge brackets and adapted to shift said door bodily upon operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second door extending between and mounted upon said hinge brackets and an operative connection between said latch and said first door.
10. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said hinge brackets and adapted to shift said door bodily upon operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second door slidably mounted on said hinge brackets and a connection between said latch and said first door to shift said latch upon operation of said first door.
11. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said hinge brackets and adapted to shift said door bodily upon operation of said door, a second dumpin door, and a latch for said second door slidably mounted on said hinge brackets and operated by said first door to control said second door.
12. In a mine car, a dumping door, hinge means for said door adapted to shift said door bodily upon the operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second door and an operative connection between said latch and said first door whereby said latch is shifted bodily to control the operation of said second door upon the operation of said first door.
13. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, a dumping door, hinge means for said door supported from said sills and adapted to shift said door bodily upon the operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second door extending between and supported from said sills and an operative connection between said latch and said first door.
14. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported by said brackets, cooperating means on said hinges and brackets to shift said hinges and door bodily upon operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second door slidably mounted upon said hinge brackets and an operative connection between said latch and said first door to shift said latch upon operation of said first door.
15. In a mine car having longitudinal sills, hinge brackets supported by said sills, projections on said hinge brackets, a dumping door, hinges for said door supported on said brackets, said hinges having recesses cooperating with said projections on said hinge brackets to shift said hinges and door bodily upon operation of said door, a second dumping door, a latch for said second dumping door slidably mounted upon said hinge brackets and an operative connection between said latch and said first door to in hand.
