PONTEE' FOR HOLDING BOTTLES WHILE BEING FINISHED. NO.17Z,734. Patented Jan. 25,1876.
@itmssrs N.PETER s, PHOTO-L|THOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM HAUGK, OF GLASSBOROUGH, JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO WHITNEY BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
. IMPROVEMENT lN' PONTEES FOR HOLDING BOTTLES WHILE BEING FINISHED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,734, dated January 25, 1876; application filed December 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAUGK, of Glassborough, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pontees or Holders for Bottles while being Finished; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description ofthe nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsto fullyunderstand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a front view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Heretot'ore it has been'necessary to employ a different pontee forevery size of bottle to be finished. 7
My inventiouconsists in constructing a pontee adjustable as to width and height or depth, whereby a single pontee maybe employed for the various sizes of bottles.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rod or stem, to whose upper end there are secured laterally-projectin g sockets B.
On the stem A there is fitted a sliding sleeve, 0, whose upper end carries a supporting-plate, D, and in order to permit the sleeve to slide past the point of junction of the sockets B the upper portion of the sleeve is bifurcated, as at a. a. A spring, 0, is fitted between the bottom of the sleeve and a collar on the bottom of the stem for pu.pose of elevating the sleeve and, consequently, the plate I).
Frepresents arms, whose lower ends are bent or angular and adjustably fitted to the sockets B. To the upper ends of the adjustable arms there are secured jaws G, whose inner faces are concave or curved so as to embrace the sides of the bottle to be finished.
Screws H pass through the walls of the sockets B, and bear against the lower ends of the arms F, so as to hold the jaws G in the adjusted position. V
Inthe stem A there is formed a slot, J, and
I in the sleeve 0 a series of openings, K. A
pin, L, is adapted to pass through one of the openings K into the slot J for the purpose of holding the supportingplate D in its adjusted position.
In order to limit the upward motion of the sleeve 0, as necessary for adjustment of the plate D, the sleeve is drawn down until the proper opening of the series K will register with the slot J; then the pin L is inserted in said opening, and it will come to a stop against the upper wall of the slot J, and thus limit the upper movement of the stem, due to the spring 0.
It will be seen that the plate D may be readily adjusted as to the height or depth, and the jaws G as to the width of the bottle to be finished, so that the pon'tee may be used for any size of bottles within its capaoity.
In order to apply a bottle to the pontee the plate D is drawn down by operating the sleeve G, and ample space is thus provided for the reception of the bottle. The operator then fits the arms F over the bottle and above the plate D, and lets go the sleeve G, so that the spring 0 will force up the plate D, and the bottle will be pressed tightly against the jaws.G,.which thus prevent escape of the bottle both laterally and from the upper side, the spring-held plate preventing escape of the bottle from below.
When the finishing operation is concluded the sleeve will be drawn down, thus carrying the plate with it, this releasing the bottle of pressure, and permitting it to drop from the implement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stem A, with longitudinal slot'J, and the sleeve 0, with a series of transverse openings, K, in combination with thepin L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The stem A, with laterall y-projectin g sockets B, the encircling sleeve 0, carrying the plate-D, the jaw-arms F, and set-screws H, combined and operating substantially as and for purpose set forth.
3. Laterally-adjustable holding-jaws, in combination. with a vertically-adjustable supporting-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WM. HAUGK.
