SPONGE-RUBBER PAD FOR TELEPHONE-POLE CLIMBERS.

My present invention has reference to improvements in linemens equipment and is directed to pole climbers and has for its primary object the provision of a pad of a particular and peculiar construction which not only serves as a guide for the shank of the climber but likewise as a guide for the fastening strap the outer face of the pad being of soft leather and the inner face thereof being of sponge rubber so that the same will effectively prevent the twisting of the shank of the climber and the injury to the linemans leg which will thus occur and furthermore will space the upper portion of 5 the shank away from the linemans leg and serve as a soft cushion which will prevent both the shank and the fastening strap from inflicting injury to the leg of the lineman.

To the attainment of the foregoing the in- 2 vention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

Essentially my improvement comprises an outer face 1 of thick but pliable leather. The inner face of the pad has cemented or otherwise effectively secured to the outer face 1 the cushioning pad proper indicated by the numeral 2. The cushioning pad 2 is of sponge rubber. The outer leather or like pliable face of the pad has riveted thereto a vertically arranged plate 4; whose central portion is outbulged to form the same with a guide socket 5 and riveted to the plate 4: at the opposite sides of the vertically arranged guide socket 5 there are the straight ends of bracket plates whose central portions are outwardly bulged to provide the same with what may be termed sockets 6. Guided through the sockets 6 there is the fastening strap 7 The strap carries at one end a buckle whose tongue is designed to be received in any one of a plurality of apertures on the second end of the strap, and the guide socket 5 is adapted to receive therethrough the shank portion 8 of the climber. The climber is of the ordinary metal construction, including the metal strap or shank 8 which is offset atits lower end to form the same with a stirrup for the foot of the user and is formed at the juncture of the shank and the stirrup with the outwardly projectmg spur 9. The fastening strap holds the shank efiectively against the leg of the user, and the same being received in the socket 5 prevents any tendency of turning 0r twisting of the said shank, and the plate 4, on Which the socket 5 is formed is reinforced by the socket carrying brackets 6. Because of the soft and yieldable substances of which the pad is constructed the climber may be conveniently worn on the leg of the user without any liability of injury being inflicted thereby.

The construction disclosed by Figures 4 and 5 is only a slight modification from that above described. In this instance the pad is elongated, the same comprising an upper widened portion 10 and a reduced central extension 11. The outer face of this pad is of pliable leather or like material and the same has cemented or otherwise secured to its inner face the compressible element 12 which is preferably of sponge rubber. In this instance the straight edges of the shank receiving socket 13 are riveted to the outer face of the pad and also riveted to the pad and arranged transversely of the socket member 13 there is the fastening strap 14. This strap is not only riveted to the straight edge of the socket 13 but is likewise riveted to the outer facing of the pad.

The construction and advantages of my device will, it is thought5 be understood and appreciated by those skilledin the art to which such invention relates and therefore, further detailed description will not be required.

Having described the invention, I claim:

1. The combination with a climber comprising an upright shank having a prong and a foot stirrup at its lower end, ofa pad for said shank, constituting an outer member of sponge rubber which is comparatively thick and pliable, an inner member cemented to the outer member of sponge rubber, a metal shank guide riveted on the outer member and a transversely arranged fastening strap on said outer member.

2. The combination with a climber comprising an upright shank having a prong and a foot stirrup at its lower end, of a pad for said shank, constituting an outer member of sponge rubber Which is comparatively thick and'pliable, an inner member cemented to 10 the outer member of sponge rubber, a metal shank guide riveted on the outer member, transversely arranged sockets riveted to the sides of the first mentioned socket member and designed to receive therethrough a fastening 15 strap.
