This invention is a punch and die for use in connection with punch presses of conventional form.
The main object of the invention is to provide a punch and die in which both the punch and die members are readily removable from the die shoe and punch carrier so that they. may be reset for various operations or entirely removed when worn without replacing the entire punch or die.
Another object is to provide a simple and efficient means for retaining the punch and (lie members in any desired arrangement in their respective shoe and carrier.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of a preferred embodimentof the invention together with the accompanying drawings in which:

In carrying out the invention I provide a die shoe denoted generally at A and a punch carrier. denoted generally at B, the said die shoe being adapted for positioning upon the work table of a conventional punch press (not shown) and the said punch carrier being adapted for connection to the vertically reciprocating working head of the press.
The said die shoe A comprises a rectangular base 1 havin the vertically disposed marginal ribs or fianges 2 and the medial cut out or aperture 3. The marginal ribs 2 terminate short of the ends 4 of the base '1 and slots 5 are provided in these ends 4'by means of which the shoe is secured to the work table bolts (not shown) on the punch press (not shown). As shown in Figure 2 purpose to be described. The outer and uppercorners of the ribs 2 are cut away longitudinally to form recesses 7 and retaining side members 8 are secured by screws 9 upon the sides of the base 1 and have the inwardly directed webs 10 over the top of the ribs 2 thus enclosing the recesses 7. This construction as shown forms a longitudinal slideway in the base 1 for the reception of the die holding blocks 11 which are of a length to conveniently engage this slideway to permit ready removal and replacing of the dies when needed.
The die holding blocks 11 have the vertical marginal flanges 12 and the inwardly directed horizontal lips 13 forming a pocket adapted to receive the dies 14 which have the laterally enlarged base portion 15 to fit between these said flanges 12 and under the' lips 13. These dies 14.- have suitable apererally at 17. In order to retain these die holding blocks 11 and 'dies 14 in the desired relationship in the slideway in the base 1 plurality of set screws 18 with lock or jam nuts 19 are provided. Longitudinal slots 20 are provided in alignment with each other through the side members 8 and the ribs or flanges 2, the said slots 20 being also in alignment with the recesses 7 in these ribs. Internally threaded nuts 21 are slidably mounted in the recesses 7 these nuts being preferably square so that they cannot rotate. The set screws 18 each have their shanks passed loosely through the slots 20 and threadedly engage the nuts21 in such manner that by turning the said set screws they will move inwardly contacting the dies 14 in the die holdingv blocks 11 and securingthe same in any adjusted position.
From the foregoin it will be evident that the die holding bloc s may be readily removed from the die shoe for convenient replacing, removal or rearrangement of the dies and also that the die holding blocks may be securely locked in an desired location or arrangement in the s oes by means of the set screws.
The lower margins of the cut out or aperture 3 are cut away or recessed as shown at 22 and a slanting pan or flap 23 allows any oil? fall or oil to escape from the die when the same is in use as will be understood. The die holding blocks 11 are also provided with elongated slots 24 through their bottom portions for this same purpose.
The punch carrier B comprises a rectangular top 25 having the vertical side flanges or ribs 2e termed upon its lower side. A square shank 27 is extended vertically from a medial point of the upper side of the top 25 and this shank is adapted to be inserted in the tool socket in the workinghead ot' the punch press (not shown). Longitudinally extended recesses 28 are formed in the sides of the flanges 26 similar to the recesses 7 in the die shoe A except that .these recesses 28 are spaced from carrier as will be understood. The punch holders 32 are U-shaped in cross section and have elongated slots 33 through their bottoms 34 as shown in Figures 4 and 7. The punches 35 have the heads 36 and the operating ends 37 thereof may be of any form desired. The
heads 36 are inserted in the punch holders with the shanks of the punches extending downwardly through the slots 33 and it will be understood that these punches may also be arranged as desired similar to the dies 14 by means of suitable filler blocks 38. Longitudinal aligned slots 39 are provided in the side members 29 and the flanges 26 in align ment with the recesses 28 and internally threaded nuts 40 are slidably, but not rotatably, mounted therein. Set screws 41 with jam nuts 42 are passed through the slots 39 and 'threadedly engage the nuts 40. The punch holders 32' and punches 35 are secured in place and adjusted exactly as set forth for the die holding blocks 11 and dies 14. To strengthen the device cross bands 43 are positioned laterally across both the die Shoe A and punch carrier B, the said cross bands having angular hooks 44 to engage the sides of these elements as shown.
A stripper denoted generally at C is providedto prevent the lifting of the material being punched from the die shoe A when the punch carrier B is raised on its up stroke. This stripper C comprises the side rails 45 and the connecting ends 46 and the side strips 47 secured to the underside of the said side rails 45. The inner upper margins of the side rails 45 between the ends 46 are recessed or cut away forming horizontal shoulders 48 and longitudinally extended slots 49 are pr0- vided through the said siderails 45 in alignment with these shoulders 48. Guide or stripper blocks 50 having the extended ends 51 adapted to engage the shoulders 48 are slidably mounted in the stripper C, the said guide or stripper blocks having slots tor the passage of the punches 35. These blocks 50 are secured in any suitable arrangement in the stripper C by means of small screws 523 passing through the slots 1$) and threadedly e11- gaging the ends 5]. that this stripper may be assembled or ar ranged in any suitable manner to conform with the die shoe A and the punch carrier B.
From the foregoing it is evident that I provide a very simple and ellicient arrangement of the various operating elements permitting the use of dies and punches of various shapes and sizes in the same die shoe and punch carrier and allowing convenient and economical replacement of parts.
lVhile l have herein set forth a certain preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details so best to construct a prac' tieal device, not departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims. i
I claim:
1. In a device of thecharacter described, a die shoe having a slideway, die holding blocks adj ustably mounted in the slideway, dies adj ustably mounted in the 'said die holding blocks, a punch carrier having a slideway, punch holders adjustably mounted in this slideway, punches adjustably mounted in the punch holders and adapted to engage the dies a stripper adapted to be interposed between the punch carrier and die shoe,stripper blocks adjustably mounted in the stripperand having slots for thereception of the said punches.
2. In a device of the character described, a die shoe comprising a base and upstanding marginal flanges thereon forming a slideway, die holding elements slidably mounted in the slideway, dies adj ustably mounted in the said die holding elements, set screws passed through the said flanges and engaging the dies in the die holding elements to retain the same in any adjusted position relative to each other and to the die shoe, a punch carrier comprising a top and depending marginal flanges thereon forming a slideway, punch holders slidably mounted in the slide way, punches adjustably mounted in the punch holders adapted to engage the dies, set screws passed through the said depending flanges to engage the punches and retain the same in proper arrangement relative to the said dies and a stripper adapted to be interposed between the punch carrier and die shoe.

In a device as claimed in claim 2, the said punch carrier comprising a top, de nding marginal flanges thereon having ongitudinally extended recesses along their outer sides, side members secured upon the said outer sides of the flanges and extended inwardly over the lower margins thereof, the said flanges and side members having longitudinall extended slots in ali ment with the sai recesses, punch hol ers slidably mounted between the said flanges,the said punch holders being U shaped in cross sec tion and having slots through their bottom portions, punches mounted in the said punch holders, the stems thereof projecting throu h the said slots, set screws passed through t c said slots in the flanges and side members, and internally threaded nuts positioned in the said recesses to receive the said set screws whereby the latter may be caused to engage the punches to retain the same in any adjusted position.
5. In a device as claimed in claim 2, the said stripper comprising spaced side members and connecting end pieces, the said sidemembers having their upper and inner margins recessed forming shoulders thereon and having slots in alignment with these shoulders, stripper blocks slidably mounted on these shoulders and having slots for the reception of the punches in the punch carrier and set screws passed through the said slots and threadedly engaging the ends of the said stripperblocks to retain the same in any adjusted position.
