Description

Aug. 27, 1929. JOST COMBINED CHAIR 0R SOFA AND TABLE Filed Jan. 50. 1928 I m mwv 4 Patented Aug. 27, 1 929.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT I081, 01? YONKERS NEW YORK.
comamnn 01mm on son; AND TABLE.
Application filed January 30, 1928. Serial No. 250,356.
This invention relates to chairs and more is adapted to slide in the slot of the guide particularly to chairs e uipped with sides strip 12, the latter having a fiat portion 9 adapted to be folded so t at they may serve '\and a horizontal portion 8 near its upper as tables.
Theusual upholstered chair has considerably larger. proportions than ordlnary chairs and consequently it is inconvenient fora person sitting 1n such a cha1r to reach.
for an article on an adjacent table. It generally is necessary for such a person to arlse from the chair to obtain the desired article or it must be brought to him by someone else.
It is an object of my invention to provide an upholstered chair aving a side adapted to be folded up so that it may serve as table.
A further object is to provide a table for an upholstered chair which may be readily set up in operative position and easily and completely concealed in the chair from yiew when not in use.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, constituting a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upholstered chair when the table is not in use.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the chair showing the table in position for use.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of a side of the chair showing the manner in which supporting brackets are folded in recesses in the side. v
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of a side showing the table in operative position.
Figure 5 is an elevational View of a side of the chair.
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing details of the supporting brackets.
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the hinging arrangement for the table.
Referring to the drawings, an upholstered chair 1 is shown having a side provided with an outer surface 2 covered with upholstering material similar to that used on the rest of the chair. The inner surface 3 of the side comprises a metal plate, preferably made of aluminum, to which are fastened flat members 4 having pivoted thereto a second fiat member comprlsing a narrow neck 5 and a wider portion 6. The neck 5 end and a curved portion 10 and flat portion 11 at its lower extremity. I
As is shown in the drawings, two of such guide strips are secured to the side of the chair and the necks 5, hinged to the metalplate, are slidably positioned inthe slots 7. Positioned in the recess 13 of the frame work of the chair are supporting brackets comprising a vertical metal strip 14 having a slot 15, in which is slidably positioned the pin 16, fixed to the strut 17, the latter having a second pin 18 fixed to its opposite extremity, said pin 18 being slidable in a slot 19 in the horizontal angle member 20, the latter being pivoted at 23 to the upper end of strip 14. A spring 21 is fixed to the outer extremity of the member 20 and to pin 18 for the purpose of constantly urging the pin 18 against the outer end of slot 19. The angle member 20 is also provided with a side 22 which serves to give a greater supporting surface for the table when in operative position.. Y
In operation, when the chair is in the condition shown in Figure 1 and it is desired to use the table, the hook 25 is placed in inoperative position and the hinge members 4 are slid up in the slots 7 until the flat portions 5 and a portion of 4 may rest upon the horizontal section 8 of members 12. The angle member 20 of the bracket is then pulled outward, which allows pin 16 to rise in the slot 15 and engage a suitable notch in member 14 to hold it in the raised position. The table may then be allowed to rest on the supports and is ready for use with the metal surface 3 exposed.
When it is no longer desired to use the table the pin 16 is removed from the notch 27 and forced down in the slot 15 against the action of spring 21. This movement causes angle member 20 to fold in, leaving surface 22 exposed. The bracket in folded position is shown in Figure 3. The table is then slid off of the horizontal section 8 of member 12 and slid down in the slots 7 until the rounded section 10 is reached, when it may be folded up to expose the surface 2, which is covered with upholstering material. The hook 25 is then put into place and the chair has the appearance of any other upholstered chair. A piping 24 is provided to cover the edge of the table and assist in concealing the joint.
From the above description, it will be seen that I have provided a novel folding table for an upholstered chair which is easily placed in operative position and is of unusual convenience to a person sitting in such a chair. The device is not complicated and when not in use there is no evidence that such a chair is equipped With a table of the kind described.
The foregoing is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed, including many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an upholstered chair, a side member comprising a metal plate having one surface covered with upholstering material, guide members fixed to the chair, and means fastened to the metal plate and slidable in slots in said guide members, a folding supporting bracket to support the side member in a horizontal position, said bracket being positioned in' a recess in the chair, said bracket comprising a vertical strip having a. slot 1n which a pin is slidable, a strut fixedwardly towards the end of the slot.
2. In an upholstered chair having a side provided with piped edges, a plate adapted to be folded up to a horizontal position for use as a table, a foldable supporting bracket for said plate, said. bracket comprising a slotted vertical strip, a slotted angle member, a strut having a pin at each of its extremities adapted to move in the slots in the strip and the angle member, a spring fastened to the outer extremity of the angle member and to the adjacent pin, and means for pivoting the opposite extremity of said angle member to the vertical strip.
In witness whereof I have aflixed my signature.
ALBERT J CS1.
