HARRY ROGOVIN, F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE LIGHTING DEVICE.
Application filed May 11, 1926. 1 Serial No. 108,227.
This invention relates to portable lighting proved bed-lamp provided with a non-extendevices. sible form of hanger. v
An object of the invention is to provide a Referring in detail to the drawing, delighting device of the character described, notes aportable lighting device embodying 5 comprising a shaded lamp of improved conthe invention in the form of a shaded bedstruction adapted to be removably suspended lamp which comprises a box-like shade 11 from a support, so as to provide illumination having a bottom opening 12. An electric for reading, toilet, decorative, and other socket and lamp 13 are mounted in said purposes. shade, said shade, socket, and lamp being 10 Another object of the invention is to prosuspended as a unit by means of a hanger H vide a portable lighting device of the charfrom the headboard 1 10f a bed. acter described, constructed with extensibly The shade 11 may comprise a wire frame collapsible parts adjustable for varying the 15 having a covering'16 of suitable transludistance of the light from a support, and cent sheet material, such as a decorative, tex- 15 adapted to permit packing quantities of such tile fabric thereover, forming the sides and devices in compact form for shipping and top of the shade. As here shown, the frame storing. is constructed to include a pair of structural A further object of the invention is to members 15 and 15 supporting the front provide an improveddevice of the character 16 and the rear side 16 of the lamp shade 3 described, which may be readily mounted on covering, respectively, said members being various supporting structures, which shall held in spaced relation by suitable wire cross comprise few and simple parts assembled in braces 17 The frame members and braces a neat and attractive manner, and which is may be fastened together in any suitable relatively cheap to manufacture, and pracmanner, preferably by welding. Said brace is preferably offaccordingly consists in the features of conset inwardly of the adjacent side of the struction, combinations of elements and arshade as at 20 to provide a clearance for rangement of parts which will be exemplithe passage of conductor wires 21 which fled in the construction hereinafter described may be connected to a suitable electric 9 40 and of which the scope of application will be source (not shown).
indicated in the following claims. The hanger H is preferably formed of In the accompanying drawing, in which wire and is bent to have spaced arms or is shown one of the various possible illusbranches 25, each terminating in end loops trative embodiments of this invention, 22. Said arms have rounded engaging por- 45 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentions 28 which are interconnected by a tary portion of a headboard of a bedstead middle spacer portion 24, the loop ends 22 showing a bed lamp embodying the invenpivotally engaging with the loops 18 of the tion mounted thereon, parts of the latter braces 17. being broken away to expose the interior. To provide for adjustment of the length 5 50 Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the imof the hangers, the arms 25 may be of any proved bed-lamp showing the hanger in suitable telescoping construction, and as collapsed position for shipment or storage. shown in Figs. 2 and 3, are provided with Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view a slidably adjustable connection 26. To showing the telescoping construction of the form said connection, the hanger arms 25 hanger arm, and are made in two parts 25 and 25 having Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the imthe ends of each provided with loops 26 and 26", respectively, the part 25 passing through said loop 26 and the part 25 passing through the loop 26 to permit relative sliding movement therebetween. The hanger is given a decorative appearance and is prevented from marring surfaces with which it may contact by providing a suitable resilient sleeving 27 thereon. The sleeving extends over the extensible connection 26 and may be provided with a slack portion 27 to permit the extension and retraction of the arms 25 when adjusting the hanger.
In using the invention, the parts are assembled as shown in the drawings and may be suspended from the headboard 14 of the bedstead or from some other suitable support. The lamp and shade may be adjusted with relation to the headboard support by simply extending or contracting the hanger arms 25. For shipping bed-lamps in quantity lots or for storing same when not in use, the hanger, after the bed-lamp has been removed. from its support, is swung so that the rounded engaging portion 23 is opposite the shade opening 12. The hanger arms 25 are then moved into retracted position so that said engaging portion 23 enters the opening 12, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4 is shown the improved bedlamp provided with a non-extensible hanger. Here, the hanger 113 is provided with hanger arms 125 which are proportioned so that on swinging the hanger from its effective position, shown in dotted lines, to its folded position shown in the full lines, the rounded engaging portions 132 will just pass over the rim of the shade opening 12, thereby forming a compact body for shipment or storage free from loose and projecting parts. It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A portable lighting device of the character described, comprising a lamp shade having a bottom opening, a hanger secured to a side of the shade at a spaced distance from said opening, said hanger having a free end thereof formed with engaging means for mounting the device on a support, and means for pivotally securing the hanger to the shade for permitting the folding of said engaging means into said opening whereby the device is formed into a compact body for storage.
2. A portable lighting device of the character described, comprising a lamp shade having a bot-tom opening, adjustably extensible hanger secured to a side of the shade at a spaced distance from said opening, said hanger having a free end thereof formed with engaging means for mounting the device on a support, said hanger being pivotally secured to the shade and adapted to be collapsed and swung so that said means are entered into said opening to form said device into a compact body for storage.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
