Description

` V. N.. HUGHES sToP-cocK. I No1'72,568. Patented Jan. 25,1875- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCEN N. HUGHES, OFV BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IM PROVEMENT IN STOP-COCNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,568, dated January 25, 1876 application tiled' December 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VINcEN N. HUGHES, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the t'ollowing is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspeciication, in which drawings` Figure l is a perspective ot' the shell with its connecting-tubes and ways. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the plug. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, showing the cock adjusted with two ways open. Figs. 4 and 5 are horizontal sections, each showing only one Way open. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section, showing both ways closed.
M-y invention relates to stop-cocks; and consists ot' a hollow7 plug provided with cX- ternal and internal channels, and adjusted in a shell constructed to allow steam, gas, or iiuid to liow two ways at the same time, or either one of the two ways, or to be shut oft' entirely by the adjustment ot' the one plug and of one stem, as hereinafter described.
A is the shell, provided with connectingtubes a a', communicating with the chamber of the shell by openings b b1. B is the plug, the lower part of which is provided with a transverse external channel, b2, and with openings o c in opposite sides, communicating with the interior chamber and channel d in the plug, which channel and openings are located to range horizontally with the openings in the shell. The lower end of the plug is provided with a small hole, h, at the bottom of its chamber, to allow water to escape to prevent freezing.
This stopcock is adapted to general use, and especially for service-pipes for supplying` water in houses, and sprinkling and washing streets.
When the cock is adjusted, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the water Hows at the same time into the house through tube a', and upward to the street through channel d in the plug.
In Fig. 4t the cock is shown adjusted tor the water to flow into the house only, and in Fig. 5 to the street only; and Fig.,6 shows the water cut oli' entirely.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stop-cock consisting ot' a shell, A, having openings b b1, in combination with the plug B, having an external channel, b2, openings c c', and interior channel d, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that Ii claim the foregoing as my own in vention I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VINcEN NoDoLL HUGHES.
