This invention relates to the art of making shoes and has especial relation to lasts used when sewing the seams of shoe tips.

An object ol the present invention is to provide a last for this purpose which may be readily inserted within. a shoe and quickly and easily adjusted and held in adjusted position and readily and quickly removed from the shoe after use, novel means being provided for adjusting the length of the last and holding the same in adjusted position, the said means permitting of a rapid collapsing of the last prior to removal.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the itollowing novel features and details of constructitm to be hereinafter more fully described, illusthe invention in position foruse.

Referring to the drawings in detail where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the last which constitutes the present invention is shown as comprising a toe section 10 and a heel section 11, the said sections being adjustably connected by means of a bar 12. i

The toe section 10 is designed to lit within the toe portion of a shoe 13 to facilitate sewing the shoe tip 1 1, the heel section 11 and the bar 12 acting to hold the toe section in place.

The heel section comprises a channeled member which includes a bottom 15 and side walls 16, the rear ends of the latter being connected by a curved end wall 17 which is designed to engage the inner heel portion releasing section on the line 7 7 of- LAST.

The bar 12 is provided. in its opposite side edges with longitudinally disposed grcoves 18 within which extend tongues 19, the latter projecting inwardly from the side walls 16, so that a sliding engagement is provided between the bar and the heel section 11. i The bar is further provided upon its upper face with teeth 20.

Pivotally mounted between the side walls 16 of the heel section 11 upon a pin 21 is a handle socket 22, shown in detail in Figure 8 of the drawings. This handle socket includes spaced plates 23 which are provided. with openings 24 for the passage of the pin 21. The handle socket 22 is preferably formed from a single blank of material, the sides of which areconnectedby pins or rivcts 25 which extend through ears 26. The plates 23 are also provided. with registering openings 27 for the reception of a pivot pin 28, the latter passing through the inner end of a power dog 29 which is adapted to engage the teeth :20. A. spring 30 which has one of its ends bearing against the dog and its opposite endv hearing within the handle socket 22 serves to normally force the dog 29 downward. A suitable handle 31 is adapted to be placed within the member 22 and when the latter is rockedv upon the pin 21, the bar 12 may be moved with respect to the heel section 11 through the medium of the dog as will be readily understood. In orderto prevent retrograde movement of the bar 12 there is provided a holding dog 82 whose inner end is mounted upon the pin 21. This dog is forced downward under the action of a "sp1.'i1ig 33 Whicharranged in a manner.similarto the spring 30.

Also 'pivotally mounted upon the pin 21 is a releasing ni'ember 34;. This member is provided with teeth 35 and 36 which are designed to engage pins 37 and 38 carried respectively by the dogs 29 and 32. The releasing member 34 further includes a handle 39, by means of which it may be pivotally moved so that the teeth will engage the pins as just mentioned and raise the dogs 29 and 32 out of the path of the teeth 20 and permit rapid relative adj ustment between the toe and heel sections of the last.

The releasing member .34 is provided with a laterally offset lug 40 to which is attached one end of a spring 41. The opposite end of this spring is secured to one end of a spacing bracket 42 mounted between the side walls 16 of the heel section 11. The spring 41 serves to normally hold the releasing member in the posltlon shown 1n Figures I 3 and 5 of the drawings so as not to interfere tions may be moved relatively inward and the last conveniently removed from the shoe.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details'of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims; 1

Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A shoe last comprising a toe section and a heel section, a toothed bar having one end secured to one section, a sliding connection between the bar and the other section, a socketed handle member pivotally secured to one of the sections, a dog pivotally mounted within thelower portion of the handle member and extending therefrom to engage 7 the toothed bar to move the latter and ad- 'just the sections relatively, and a holding a dog also pivotally mounted within the handle section. 7 3. A shoe last comprising a toe section and a heelsection, a. toothed bar having one end secured to one section, a sliding connection between the bar and the other section, a

socketed handle member pivotally secured to one of the sections, a dog pivotally mounted within the lower portion of the handle member and extending therefrom to en age the toothed bar to move the latter ant adjust the sections relatively, a holding dog also pivotally mounted within the handle section, and means mounted within the sections to move the dogs out of the path of the bar.

A shoe last comprising a toe section and a heel section, slidable means extending from one section for connection with the other section, pivotally movable means associated wtih one of the sections and with the slidable means to adjust the sections relatively and hold them in adjusted position, a pivotally mounted releasing member, and means carried by said member to release the section holding means.

A shoe last comprising a toe section and a heel section, a toothed bar having one end secured to one section, a sliding connection between the bar and the other section, a socketed handle member pivotally secured to one of the sections, a dog pivotally sc-- cured to the handle member and engaging the toothed bar to move the latter and adjust the sections relatively, and means normally disengaged from the dog and capable of being moved into engaging position to operate the dog and release the bar.

6. A shoe last comprising a toe section and a heel section, a toothed bar having one end secured to one section, a sliding connection between the bar and the other section, a socketed handle member pivotally secured to one of the sections, a dog pivotally mounted within the lower portion of the handle member and extending therefrom to engage the toothed bar to move the latter and adjust the sections relatively, and a pivotally mounted releasing member located adjacent to and movable independently of the handle bmember to actuate the dog and release the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
