CLOSURE FOR MUCILAGE RECEPTACLES.

This invention relates to improvements in dispensing receptacles, and has particular a reference to a closure therefor of the type disclosed in my former Patent No. 1,309,948, datedJuly 15th, 1919, wherein the receptacle is employed in dispensing nrucilage.
In the practical use of the said patent certain minor difliculties have been en countered. For instance, the constructlon of the closure of the patent, and particularly the rounded nozzle thereof, is such that an excessive amount of mucilage will sometimes accumulate about the stopper or valve and prevent it from properly 'engagmg its seat with the result that air will enter the receptacle and cause deterioration of not only the mucilage, but also metal parts 01 the closure. A further cause for deterloration of the latter parts is the fact that portions thereof extend a considerable distance downwardly into the receptacle so that when the latter is filled, or nearly so, said parts will be continuously immersed in the contents.
An object of the present invention 1s to overcome the above difliculties by providing a closure, the valve of which will always be properly seated, when the devlce 1s not 1n use, to effectively close the receptacle and wherein all parts of the closure will be kept from immersion in the contents ot the receptacle except when the latter is lnverted to empty said contents.
Another object is to provide a closure of such construction that after the same has been attached to the receptacle, the latter can not be refilled without mutilating the closure to such an extent as to render it 1111- fit for further use. The above and other objects Wlll appear more clearly from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing the numeral 6 indicates a receptacle which may be of glass or any other desired material, the body being preferably of tapered formation and having an annular groove 7 formed in its outer surface adjacent the open end of said body for a purpose which will later appear. Although the receptacle and its closure member are specially adapted for use in dispensing mucilage, it will, of course, be understood that the device can be used for other purposes without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The closure cap for the open end 01 the recepiacle 6 comprises an intermediate portion 8 disposed parallel to the plane of the open end of the receptacle and having an annular flange 9 depending therefrom. This flange is provided adjacent its free edge with opposed indentations 10 which are adapted to engage in the annular groove 7 to retain the closure member in position on the recep tacle, the material of the closure being preferably resilient so that said indentations will be effective in holding the closure in its operative position. By this construction it will be practically impossible to disengage the closure cap from the receptacle without mutilating the former to such an extent that it can not effectively be used again for the same purpose. In this manner, refilling of the receptacle and furtheruse of the same, after once being emptied is avoided.
The closure cap further includes a frustoconical nozzle 11 extending centrally from the inner edge of the intermediate portion 8 and having the edge of its smaller or outer end beveled as indicated at 12 for the purpose which will be presently described. A tapered valve or stopper 13 is yieldably supported within the nozzle and the diameter of its larger end is greater than that of the outer end of the nozzle 11 so that when the valve is in closing position in the nozzle, it will eflectively'engagethe inner edge of the smaller end of the nozzle and combine with said bevel to form a very shallow groove or trough into which a small amount of mucilage may flow from the surface of the valve after the device has been inverted for use as shown in Fig. 3. This small amount of mucilage will congeal and harden in the groove and thereby form an effective seal which will further aid in preventing ingress of air into the receptacle with the consequent deterioration of the contents thereof. This seal, however,-is of such a nature that it will not interfere with the movement of the valve 13 to an open position when pressure is exerted thereon to permit of the contents of the receptacle flowing therefrom.
The valve 13 is of hollow formation and is normally and yieldably supported in its closed position by a coil spring 14 of tapered formation, the smaller coils 15 of which are closely grouped together and snugly fit within the valve 13', as shown in Fig.1 2. so that said valve will have no tendency to rock laterally on the spring as is the case in the device of said patent.
A seat member 16, is provided which is in the form of a strip adapted to extend diametrically across the closure cap and end of the receptacle 6 and which is provided intermediate its ends with an opening 17, aligned with the smaller opening in the nozzle 11, so as to permit of the direct passage of the contents of the receptacle through the opening 17 and into said nozzle when the receptacle is inverted. This strip or seat 16, is provided'with-an annular groove 18 extending about said opening in which the larger end of the coil spring 14 is seated and which acts to prevent lateral shifting of the spring in both its expanded and compressed positions. To secure the seat 16 in position within the closure cap, the extremities thereof are engaged between the intermediate portion 8 of the cap surrounding the nozzle 11 and the opposed indentations 19 struck into the flange 9 at a distance from its inner edge substantially equal to the thickness of the seats 16. After the ends of the seat have been snapped into position, as shown in Fig. 2, the indentation 19 will be effective inretaining the seat in position. Further, a gasket 20 is placed within the closure cap and engaged with the ends of the seat 16 and is interposed between said seat and the open end of the receptacle 6. The pressure which is necessary to apply to the closure cap in pressing the same in position on the receptacle and the relation of the indentations 10 to the grooves 7 in said receptacle is such that the gasket 20 will be securely held in position and will in'turn be eflective in preventing displacement of the seat 16. The latter is of such construetion that no portion thereof will extend inwardly beyond the plane of the'open end of the receptacle 6, and therefore, no portion of the seat will be immersed in the contents of the receptacle except when the latter is inverted.
. The free edge of the flange 9 has extending laterally therefrom, the spreader plate 21 which may be utilized to spread the innerlage upon a surface after it has been poured from the receptacle by the opening of the valve 13.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a closure for dispensing receptacles, a closure cap including an annular flange adapted to encircle the open end of a receptacle and further including a nozzle, a seat member secured in position in said cap and having a discharge opening aligned with the outlet of said nozzle and through which the contents pass to said nozzle, said seat further having an annular groove surrounding said openlng, a spring having one end engaged within the groove in said seat, and a valve in said nozzle engaged b the other end of said spring'to normally cl ose said nozzle.
2. In a closure for dispensing receptacles, a closure cap including an annular flange adapted to encircle the 0 en end of a receptacle and furtherinclu ing a nozzle, said flange having opposed indentations extending only partially around the same and adapted to engage with portions of said receptacle when said closure cap is forced into position upon the open end of said r eceptacle, a seat member mounted in said closure cap and having its center portion provided with an opening through which the contents of the receptacle will pass into said nozzle, the said central portion being disposed in a plane exteriorly of the open end of said receptacle, a spring engaged with said seat, and a valve in said nozzle normally closing the same by the pressure of said spring.
3. In a closure for dispensing receptacles, a closure cap including an intermediate portion, an annular flange depending from said intermediate portion and encircling the open end of a receptacle and having opposed indentationstherein, a nozzle extending from said intermediate portion, a seat member having its ends interposed between and engaged with said indentations and said intermediate portion, a gasket engaging the ends of said seat and interposed between the same and the open end of the receptacle, a spring engaged with said seat, and a valve in said nozzle yieldably held in closing position by said spring.
4. In a closure for dispensing receptacles, a closure cap including an intermediate portion, an annular flange depending from said intermediate portion and encircling the open end of a receptacle and having opposed indentations extending only partially around the same, said indentations enga ing with portions of said receptacle, when the closure cap is forced into position upon the open end of the receptacle, whereby to prevent detachment of the cap therefrom, said flange further having other indentations, a nozzle extending from said intermediate portion, a seat member having its ends interposed between and engaged with the last named indentations and said intermediate portion and provided with an opening and a groove surrounding said opening, a spring having 10 one end engaged in said groove, and a valve in said nozzle engaged by the other end of said spring and yieldably. held in closing position thereby.
