Description

Aug. 6, 1929. A. M. GUY 17,723,158
EDGE MOLDING FOR ROO S Filed July 13, 1928 Patented Aug. 6, 1929.
PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR M. GUY, OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.
EDGE MOLDING FOR ROOFS.
Application filed July 13,
This invention relates to a metal molding for the edges of shingled roofs for use in reroofing, the general object of the invention being to provide a channel-shaped member 5 for fitting over the edges of the old shingles and over the top flange of which the composition roofing extends so as to protect the edges of the shingles from the elements and prevent them from curling or warping or 10 from falling out and which also acts to give a finished appearance to the roof.
This invention also con. s in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, ref- 20 erence will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing how the device is used.
Figure 2 is a view of a modification.
As shown in these views, the molding 1 is of channel shape in cross section so that it can [it over the edges of the shingles 2 of the old roof, with the upper flange longer than the lower flange. This upper flange is adapted to be nailed or otherwise fastened to the shingles, as shown at 3, and the composition roofing l extends over the upper flange and projects beyond the same, as shown at 5.
As will be seen, the molding can be easily and quickly applied and it affords a perfect protection for the edges of the wooden shingles for preventing them from curling or warping or from falling out and also protects the shingles from the elements. It also 1928. Serial No. 292,570.
gives a finished appearance to the roof as it entirely hides the edges of the shingles and when painted gives the effect of an entirely new edge In the modification shown in Figure 2, the flanges are bent inwardly to provide the grooves 6 which act to prevent water or moisture from seeping between the molding and the roofing and reaching the shingles as any water entering between the upper flange and the roofing will be caught by this groove and directed to the cares of the roof. The lower groove also acts to prevent water or moisture from reaching the free edge of the lower flange.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangen'ient of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is An edging device for a roof comprising a member of channel shape in cross section with one flange resting on top of the root and its lower edge on the lower face of the overhanging part of the roof, with the roofing material extending over the upper flange, the upper flange being of greater length than the lower flange and fastening means passing through the upper flange into the roof, each flange being inwardly bent intermediate its ends to form a groove, said groove extending longitudinally of each flange.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ARTHUR M. GUY.
