Description

Patented Aug. 6, i 1929.
UNITED STATES HUBER! amass, or TOLEDO, omo, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO ARTHUR s mcxox. or TOLEDO, 01110. I r 1 MUSICAL 'roY.
Application filed October 22, 1927. Serial No. 227,878.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and yet efiicient musical toy of the reed type, that may be formed from a plastic material as b molding and'subsequent hardening thereof when formed and cast to shape. Thus the toy may be formed from a great variety of plastic materials, such as-waxes, resins, and compounds of admixtures of materials such as phenolic condensation'prodnets, and also from candy compositions and food mixtures that may be rendered plastic and hardened by chilling or cooling or 'drymg. p
' By my invention I have provided a musical toy that will produce a pleasant sound and may be made at an exceedingly low cost of production and, furthermore, may be made of a material that is excedingly attractive to the eye, or of material that is not only attractive in its appearance, but also material that is palatable and ap etizing to a child, who will, consequently, 'd pleasure not only in manipulating the toy, but also in subsequently eating it.
The invention may be contained in structures that vary in their details and, to illustrate a practical application of the invention, I have selected one of'such structures and shall describe it hereinafter. The structure selected is shown in the accompanying drawm s.
lecte for the purpose of illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the toy illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the-toy. Fig. 4 is a view of a section taken on the line 4-4 indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view of a section taken on the plane of the line 5--5 also indicatedinFig. 1. The toy is formed from any suitable moldable material, or composition of materials,
- mos vthat becomes plastic b content, or b the I of water and omes har ened by the reduction of the temperature of the material to normal atheric temperatures, or becomes hardene by e ation of water, as by'd cation of heat and the reduction of the water content of the composition. All of the parts of the toy, by the molding or castin operations, become integrated one into t e other and 1111.88 single unit'is wed in is subdivided by a plurality being considerably longer i 1 is atop view of the musical toy se- I heat or by a water piece 6 15 W8 both the appli a shape to produce a musical toy on which a plurality 0 notes may be formed. The toy is provided with an upper wall 1 and a lower wall 2 which are joined together by the side walls 3, 4, 5, and the mouth piece 6. The walls and the mouth piece 6 form a chamber that that are integrated with and extend from the wall 3 to the mouth piece 6. The wall 3 slopes from the Wall 5 to the wall 4. The wall 5, than the wall 4, the chambers 11 that are formed between the partitions 10 are progressively shorter. The partitions 10 are located parallel to the walls 4 and 5 and consequently the partitions 10 and the walls of the toy form chambers of progressively decreasing length.
The edge of the wall 1 in proximity to the mouth piece 6 is beveled as shown at 12. The edge of the beveled part 12 is locateda short distance from the mouth piece 6. The acute angle of the beveled edge is located at the inner side of the wall 1 and in line with the air current that is produced by the contour of the sides that hereinafter described. The partitions 10 are also cut away along the same line that the beveled surface is formed as shown in Fi 2 and 4 to aid in the production of the vi rations of the air column in each of the chambers 11.
The mouth piece 6 that forms oneofthe sides of the musical toy comprises the wall 15 which is a continuation of the wall 1 or is located in the same plane as the wall 1, that is the inner and outer sides of the wall 15 are located in the same planes as the inner and outer sides of the wall 1. The mouth piece 6 is also provided with a substantial V-shaped wall 16. One side 17 of the wall 16 is located at ri ht angles to the walls 1 and 2, while anot er side 18 of the wall 16 slopesat about the same an le that the beveled surface 12 is located and so that the planes in which the surfaces 12 and 18 are located, when extended, are substantially parallel to each other. The mouth sloping outer side 19, whereby the mouth may be conveniently applied to the mouth piece 6. The mouth piece 6 is also provided with partitioning walls 20 that are practically extensions of the partitioning walls 10, that is, the partitioning walls 20 have their sides located the a p an tha the .sides of the walls form the mouth piece 6, as-
also, preferably, provided with av of partitions 1O are located in. The side 18 of the wall 16 of the mouth piece 6, and the inner side of the wall of the mouth piece 6 coact to direct a current of air, when the instrument is blown on by the mouth, towards the acute angle of the beveled edge 12 of the wall 1, thereby producing a note, or notes, that correspond to the length or lengths of one or more chambers 11 and, consequently, dependent on the location of the mouth of the musical instrument, one or more of the air columns formed by one or more of the chambers 11, may be set into vibration and produce a single or a plurality of notes. The shape of the parts of the musical instrument taken in connectionwith'the resonating edect produced by the hardened plastic material of which the musical toy is formed causes the production of a remarkably pleasant tone of varying rate of vibration and, consequently, the varying pitch that is characteristic of each of the chambers 11. The tone quality that is produced by the use of a moldable plastic is exceedingly pleasing in its quality and is strikingly characteristic and not found in any other instrument.
I claim:
1. A cast wind musical toy having integral walls of plasticable edible material that form a, plurality of chambers of different lengths,
and having a wall for closing the ends of the chambers and a wall that forms a side wall of each of the chambers, the side wall having a beveled edge and a mouth piece also integral with the body of the musical toy having side walls and partitioning walls in line with walls of the chambers, one of the side walls having a sloping surface to cooperate with the other of the side walls of the mouth piece to direct In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
