FASTENEB MECHANISM.
Application filed December 10, 1927. Serial No. 239,075.
This invention relates to fastener mechanism, and more particularly to means or mechanism for fastening a closure member, on a building, in its closed or in various open positions in its frame member.
The main object of this invention is to provide a durable, efficient and economical fastening mechanism which will be effective .for retaining the closure member, as a door or window, in its frame member, and in various open positions as well as in the closed position. A further object is to provide the mechanism in the form of a casing with a wall'having wedging means or slanting portions thereon, and a rod slidablethrough the casing, and means movable along the rod to wedge between it and either one of said wedging means for fastening the rod in the casing.
These and other objects are attained with my invention,'as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in
which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a building, showing an application of my invention to the closure means thereon, in the form of a pair of doors one of which is open and the other closed; I

In the drawings 1 have'shown one form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, and this form comprises a casing or housing member 10 and a 'rod or member 11 slidably mounted therein. One of these members is attached to the door frame 12 of a building, and the other is attached to the door or closure member 13.
In the form of my invention illustrated the casing has one of its walls formed with oppositely slanting portions which provide wedging portions 14, and this wall may be used as the top wall and have its central portion 15 peaked or cupped upwards to receive the head of a rivet 16 placed in a plate 17 which may be fastened to said frame member 12, with suitable screws, as indicated in Fig. 3, for pivotally mounting the casing on such frame member, whenever my looking mechanism is used in connection with a door and its frame as shown. The casing includes side walls 18 and end walls 19, which are preferably made integral with the top Wall and arranged rectangular. The bottom wall or member 20 has its ends 26 bent upward to engage in the end walls 19, and corresponding openings 21 are provided through said ends 20 and end walls 19 for the rod 11 to extend slidably therethrough and through the casing. The side portions 22 of member 20 are bent upward, and may also be provided with strips or members 2a,
to furnish sufficient dimensions to teeth or serations 24 provided at the upper edges of said members 22 and 23. This bottom wall has its end and side portions fitting snugly into the. end and side walls of the casing, and is fastened thereto in any suitable manner, as by the use of screws 25 threaded in said side walls18, in side portions 22, and in strips 23, thus fastening the parts firmly together.
In this form of my invention the rod 11 is pivotally attached to the door 13, preferably by having an end 11 flattened and perforated, and a bolt or element 26 extending therethrough and through a lug 27 on a bracket member 28 which is fastened to the door with screws or other suitable fastening elements. The rod thus swings on bolt. 26 and slides through the casing, and said casing swings on pivot element 16, while the door 13 is being swung in its frame 12.
The means for looking or fastening the rod in a selected position in the casing, and
, thereby locking or fastening the door in the selected open or closed position in the frame, comprises a wedging member preferably in the form of a roller 30, which travels over the rod inside the casing and wedges between the rod and one of the two wedging portions 14 of the casing top. The roller is used since it permits convenient withdrawal or return from the wedging position under the slanting or wedging portion 14, to the intermediate neutral position, for the free movement of the rod through the casing.
Means is provided for positively moving the roller to wedging position, and this means preferably comprises a pulley 31 on a shaft t turn with the pulley and the gear means, as by being rectangular and mounted in rectangular openin s therein, but preferably has the roller placed rotatably on it; and manual means or a hand-engaged member is provided, preferably in the form of a cable 34 which is fastened to the pulley 31 and passes through suitable holes 85 in bottom wall 20, for rotating the roller and gears and thereby moving them longitudinally over the ratchet teeth and rod, into wedging position acent either end of the casing. Beads 36 may also be provided. on the cable to indicate by their position also the position of the roller in the casing. g
Means is preferably also provided for yield ingly retaining the roller in either its neutral or its operative position, and this includes a bowed spring or curved leaf spring 37 which is placed. on the inside of the casing and re 'siliently and frictionally bears against the end of the shaft and against the adjacent gear; thus safely retaining the shaft, gear, and roller in any selected position in the easing until actuated by the manual means.
' This construction is especially adapted for use on doors and windows, and provides a very durable, lasting, and conveniently operable locking mechanism, which is also quite inexpensive to manufacture.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mechanism for fastening a closure member in a frame member, said mechanism comprising a casing having wedging means thereon and means for attaching it to one of said members, a rod extending slidably through said casing and having means for attaching it to the other of said members, and an element mounted in said casing and movable to be wedged between said wedging means and said rod for fastening said closure member in a selected position in said frame member.
2. A fastener comprising a casing having oppositely slanting portions, a rod extending slidably through said casing, ratchet means in the casing, a roller with gear means thereon to travel on said ratchet means, and means for rolling said roller'and gear means longitudinally along said ratchet means and wed e the roller between either slanting portion and the rod to fasten the rod in the casing.
A fastener comprising a casing including side and endwalls having a peaked top 'with slanting portions thereon, a bottom member with ratchet means thereon mounted on said walls, a rod extending through said walls and having means at one end for attaching it to an object, and an element having gear means thereon to engage said ratchet means for moving said element under either slanting portion to fasten said rod in the casing.

5. A mechanism for fastening a closure member in its closedand in various open positions in a frame member, said mechanism comprising a casing having wedging means thereon and means for attaching itto one of said members, a rod extending slidably throughsaid casing and having means for attaching itto the other of said members, an element movable in said casing, and manual means for moving said element to Wedge it between the rod and the Wedging means for fastening said closure member in its closed or in the selected open position on the frame member.
6. A mechanism for fastening a closure member in its closed and in various open positions in a frame member, said mechanism comprising a casing having a wall with oppositely slanting portions, means for pivotally mounting the casing on one of said members, a rod extending slidably through said casing and having means at one end for pivotally mounting it to the other of said members, a roller movable over the rod in the casing, and manual means for rotating the roller to wedge it between said rod and a slanting portion to fasten said closure member in the selected position in the frame.
