S. VREELAND. 4sAsH-FASTENER.
Patented Jan. 11

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON VREELAND, OF SALAMANCA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,2] 2, dated January-11, 1876; application tiled October 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON VREELAND, of Salamanca, Oattaraugus county, New York, have invented Van Improved Sash Lock and Retainer, of whichV the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and ei'ective locking and retaining d evice for Window-sashcs; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sectional viewsot' part ot' a window sash and frame, with my improved lock and retainer in different positions; and Fig. 3, a perspective View of a portion of the lock.
A represents part of the frame of a window, and B one ot' the side strips of the sash, the edge of which adjacent to the frame is recessed for the reception of a plate, D, loosely connected at or near thc center ot the outer end of a shank, a, adapted to a longitudinal opening formed in the sash-frame, and provided at its inner end with a projection or hook, b, against which acts a lip, d, on the stem ot' a key, E, the latter being inserted into a transverse opening in the sash-trame, and serving to eft'ect the Withdrawal ot' the plate D when operated, as shown in Fig. 2. Around the shank a is coiledspring, which bears at one end against tlleplate D, and at the other against a loose ring, f, the latter abutting against a shoulder formed in the sash, so'that the tend ncy of the spring is to press the plate D outward against the frame A.
The plate I) maybe connected to the shank a by means ot' an ordinary enlarged head upon the latter; but I prefer the mode ot' connection shown in Fig. 3, as it is simple, and readilyV allows the requisite movement of the Vplate D.
In this case the plate has a vertical opening, h, and in its face, on each side ofthe opening,
is formed a recess, z', and the shank a has a T- 'ing the movement of the sash until the plate is retracted by operating the key E. When the device is intended merely as a retainer the edge of the frame is straight, the pressure of the plate D against the same being sufficient to prevent the rattling or accidental movement ofthe sash.
Among the advantages of my invention may be mentioned its security, the t'ewness of its parts, its cheapness, and the ease with which it can be applied to a sash.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, in a sash lock and retainer, ot' the plate D, hung to the end ot' the hooked shank e, the spring e, ring f, and key E, -as set forth.
2. The plate D, its vertical opening h, and recesses t t, in combination with the T-headed shank a, to which said plate is hung, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specih'cation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' SIMON `VREELAND.
