This invention relates to portable lighting devices and more particularly is directed to a shaded lamp adapted to be removably suspended from a support so as to provide illumination for reading, toilet, decorative and other purposes.

One object of the invention is the provision of a portable lighting device of the character described, constructed of detachable parts which permit packing quantities of such devices in compact form for shipping or storing.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved device of the character described, which may be readily mounted on various supporting structures and shall comprise few and simple parts combined to form a neat and attractive article, which, shall be relatively cheap to manufacture, and practical and eflicient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. 1 Certain features herein shown and described are shown, described and claimed in my (to-pending application Serial No. 108,227 filed in the United States Patent Ofice on the 11th day of May, 1926, and accordingly not claimed herein.

lVith the above exception, the invention accordingly consists in the features of con- :struction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing, denotes a portable lighting device embodying the invention in the form of a shaded bed-lamp which is seen to comprise a boxlike shade 11 having a bottom opening 17. In said shade, there is suitably mounted an electric socket and lamp 12, said shade, socket and lamp being suspended as a unit by means of a detachable hanger 13 from the headboard 16 of a bedstead.

The shade 11 may comprise a wire frame 14 having a covering 15 of suitable translucent sheet material such as a decorative textile fabric stretched thereover to form the sides and top of the shade. As here shown, the frame construction includes a pair of structural member 14 and 14 supporting the front 15 and rear side 15 of the lamp shade covering, respectively, said members being held in spaced. relation by suitable wire cross-braces 18. Said frame members and braces may be fastened together in any suitable manner, preferably by being welded. For a purpose hereinafter to appear, two of said braces 18 connecting intermediate portions on opposite sides of the frame structure are prefe ably provided with portions 19 extending outwardly from the rear side 15 of the shade, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

For mounting the socket and lamp 12, suitable means such as brace 21 is supported between the frame members 14 and 14 at one end thereof, the lamp socket being secured to said brace 21 in any well understood manner. The brace is preferably offset inwardly of the adjacent side of the shade, as at 22, to provide a clearance for the conductor wires 23 which may be connected to a suitable electric source (not shown).

The hanger 13 is preferably formed of wire and bent to have spaced arms or branches 13, each terminating in a hook end 24. Said arms have rounded engaging portions 25 which are interconnected by a middle spacer portion 13" spaced to correspond to the distance between the bent portions 19 of the braces 18. To give the hanger a finished appearance and to prevent accidental marring of the surfaces with which it may contact a suit-able resilient decorative sleeving 26 is provided thereon.

In using the invention, the hook ends 24 of the hanger are engaged over the rim portion of the shade opening 17 at the rear side of the shade and each hanger arm 13 is engaged by a bent portion 19, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The assembled bed-lamp may now be suspended from the head board 16 of the bedstead or from any other suitable support. It should be noted that the hanger arms 13 extend across the rear side of the shade and engage the rim opening 17 so that a rigid attachment and support therefor is provided. To prevent the bent portions 19 from marring any finished surface against which they are liable to contact, a resilient sleeving 26 made of rubber or other suitable resilient material may be applied thereon. For shipping the bed lamps in quantity lots or for storing same when not in use, the hanger 13 may be easily and quickly detached and packed within the shade so as to form a compact body.

In Fig. 5 is shown a. modified form of the invention in which the bent portions 19 for engaging the hanger arms 13 are replaced by hook members 119, the openings 119 in said hooks being of such size as to permit the passage of the hanger hook ends 2%.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of prac tical use. I

' As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 1. A device of the character described, comprising a lamp shade having an open side, a wire frame for the shade, a covering over said frame, and a hanger for mounting the device on a support, said frame having means extending through the covering for detachably retaining the hanger to the shade, said hanger having engagement with the rim of said open side.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a hanger, a lamp shade depending from said hanger and having a bottom opening, said hanger having detachable means for engaging a rim portion of the shade opening, said shade having disengageable means spaced from said opening for engaging said hanger.

3. In a portable lighting device of the character described, a lamp shade comprising a frame having a plurality of structural members held in spaced relation by crossbracing, a covering over said frame, said cross-bracing including means olfset inwardly to retain a lamp'within the covering, and a hanger secured to an exterior side of the shade for suspending the device from a support, and detachable means for supporting said shade, said means including a member having hook ends engaging said frame, and bent members extending from said frame adapted to engage said last mentioned member, said bent members being of such size as to permit passage of said hook ends therethrough.
