PLASTIC-BLOCK MOLD;

My invention relates to block molding machines in general, and more directly to the construction of the molds for forming the blocks, the principal objects of the improvement being to so construct the mold that it will be more quickly and easily handled and the blocks more quickly removed therefrom. Other objects are to provide a hinged mold box having a cont-rolled action of the hinged sides, means for adjusting the control tension, and means for automatically repositioning the formed block as the mold is opened. v
With these and other objects in view, my invention will bey fully comprehended by reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of the mechanism, and in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 shows an end elevation in section of the construction with the moldA closed, Figure 2 being a slightly modified form with the mold open. Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Figure 4 is a plan view with the cover plate removed and the mold partially cut away. Figure 5 is an enlarged view of one of the hinge members, and Figure 6 is a similar view of the spring holding and adjusting device.
lfVith further consideration of the drawings, the numeral 7 indicates the front side plate of the mold, 8 being the back plate, 9 the end plates which may be hinged, as at 10, to the back plate 8, and latched, as" at 11, to the front plate 7. 12 is the top plate, hinged at 13 and latched at 14 to the front and back plates 7 arid 8, the hinge 13 preferably being provided with a projection 15 to serve as a strike when the cover is in raised position. 16 indicates the removable pallets on which the blocks 38 are molded, it being understood that the mold sides may be provided with any sort of ornamental, interlocking or special shapes or forms desired, as indicated at 17, and if desired the ends may have openings 18 to receive the supports 19 of a core forming device 20.
Beneath the mold, and supporting the pallets 16, is aI base or frame 21, provided witli feet 32, to the walls of which are pivoted, as at 23, a plurality of downward extending supports from the sides v7 and 8, these supports being extended laterally front and rear, as at 24 and 25, to provide angular faces 24 and 25 on each support, these faces each being provided with a groove 26 to .receive the end of a cantilever spring 27 which may be mounted on a. bracket 28 on the frame 21, and which may be adjusted in position and tension by screws 29, and said springs may be held in the bracket as by a screw 30. A plurality of rods 33 having formed ends 34 are pivotally attached to the front plate 7, as at 35, said rods passing below the pallet 16 and having upturned ends 36 engaging the rear edge of said pallet, so that when plate 7 is opened forward the pallet is automatically pulled forward carrying the block 38 with it and leaving a clear space 39 between said block and said back plate 8, which may, if desired, be rigidly attached to frame 21, as at 40. The pallet 16 may rest and slide on top of frame 21, as at 31, and the pull rod 33 may be supported on a bracket 37 attached to framel 21. A guard 41 may also be provided to shield the rods 33 and springs 27 from becoming covered with drippings vfrom the mold which might prevent their proper functioning.
In operation, the pallet is positioned and the wall members of the mold are closed and latched in position. The core forming device is then placed in position and the mold filled with a requisite amount of plastic material and the top plate is closed down and latched. By admission of compressed air t0 the core forming mechanism the material in the mold is compressed and the forming of the block is completed. The core device is then withdrawn from the mold, the mold unlatched and the top plate raised, when an arcuate movement of the front plate automatically draws the palletand the molded block thereon forward until it is entirely free from the back plate and may be removed without danger of injury to the block. The springs, acting on the extensions of the side plate supports, maintain these plates in a fixed vertical position while the mold is being closed, and in a fixed inclined position when the mold is open, avoiding the looseness and shifting of these plates in the ordinary type of mold and so enhances the operation and speed of the device..
Having thus described my invention, whatv I claim as new and desire to protect in these Letters Patent is 1. In a mold for plastic material, a mold box with the end plates and top plate thereof hingedly connected to the back plate of said box, a supporting frame beneath said mold box, said back plate being supported upon said frame, a front plate for said mold box hingedly supported upon said frame with arcuate movement toward or from said back plate, a pallet movably positioned with# in said mold box above said frame, and means to move said pallet forward from said back plate automatically upon an arcuate movement of said front plate in opening said mold box.

A vmold box for plastic material consisting of a back plate mounted upon a frame beneath said plate, end plates hingedly Connected to said back plate, a top plate hingedly connected to said back plate, a front plate having dependent supports hingedly secured tof said frame to provide a limited arcuate motion of said front plate, a iat pallet removably positioned above said fralne Within said mold box, a drawbar pivotally attached to said front plate support to move said pallet forward upon a forward arcuate motion of i said front plate, said drawbar engaging the rear edge of said pallet, and means coacting with said dependent supports for maintaining said front plate in relatively fixed vertical and inclined positions. movable plate supported on said frame, a back plate for said mold box hingedly secured by dependent supports upon said frame, a plurality of end plates pivotally attached to said black plate, a top plate pivotally attached to said back plate, a front plate having dependent. supports hingedly secured to said frame in essential alignment with said back plate, a plurality of draw rods beneath said movable plate hingedly attached to said front plate supports, lugs to Y engage the rear edge of said movable plate integrally formed upon said draw rods, means for supporting said draw rods in engagement with said movable plate, spring members secured upon said frameto engage with feet formed upon said front and said back plate supports to automatically maintain said plates in essential vertical and inclined positions, and means for locking said mold plates in closed position and for compressing materials within said mold.
4. In a mold box having a removable bottom plate, a hollow frame to support said bottom plate, a front plate having a plurality of downwardly projecting supporting arms, a plurality of opposed lugs adjacent the lower end of said supporting arms, aligned faces on said lugs angularly disposed to one another, said supporting arms being pivotally attached above said aligned faces to said hollow frame, a plurality of similarly formed supporting arms attached upon a back plate for said mold box, said last mentioned arms being pivotally mounted in essential alignment with said firstv mentioned arms, spring members supported on said frame in alignment with said supporting arms, said spring members engaging the lugs on said supporting arm to maintain said plates in fixed vertical and fixed inclined positions, screw adjustable means to alter the tension in said spring members, a plurality of pull rods attached to said supporting arms for said front plate to actuat-e said bottom plate and a block formed thereon upon movement of said front plate, essentially as and for the purpose described.
