My invention relates to apparatus for supplying such fastenings as nails to the mechanism by which they are to be utilized, it being particularly directed to organizations in which'the fa-stenings are carried for delivery in a plurality of groups or loads in a holder. A machine of this character is disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,325,751, Pope, December 23, 1919, in which machine groups of nails are held in openings in a block supported upon a carriage, and moved thereby to bring suc cessive groups into position for delivery to the driving mechanism of a heel-attaching machine. In many, if not most instances, the conditions of shoe-manufacture are such that not only all the nails of a block are used for succeeding operations, these nails being of the same length, but also that a number of blocks containing nails of such length will be employed without interruption. \Vhen this is true, the operator need give but little attention to the nail-supply, merely substituting in the apparatus, without taking time for selection, a fresh block as the supply from each is exhausted. In small shops, however, the run of shoe-sizes may be'such that the same length of nail is used for the heeling of but a few pairs of shoesin succession, so that the change of blocks must be frequent, and the order in which the different lengths of nails are called'for may be irregular. An object of my invention is to facilitate the supplying of nails under such circumstances, the change of length being made not only easy but accurate, and without danger of displacement of the nails from the blocks or holders during their handling. To achieve this object, I combine witha supportfor anail-block, or other device by which fastenings are held in delivering position upon an inserting machine, as a heeler, means arranged to carry a plurality of said devices to present them selectively to the supporting means. The supporting means and carrying means may take the form of traveling carriages, the last-mentioned means furnishing a magazine for supplying the holding devices to the former. The transfer of the devices from the magazine to the supporting means is preferably effected by means mounted upon one of the carriages, as that from which the nails are delivered. In the structure of' the patent previously referred to, there is a retaining member for the nails in the holder, which retaining member is movable to release said nails, together with an actuating member for causingthis movement. To prevent the actuation of the retaining member during transfer of the holding blocks between the carriages, I make the actuating member movable into and out of the path of said retaining member at its rear edge, as by mounting it upon a spindle and governing its position by a handle. 7
One of the several possible embodiments of. my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a top plan view ofmy improved nail-supplying apparatus in place upon a heeling machine, but a portion of the latter, in horizontal section, being included;

Of the heel-attaching machine M, in association with which I have chosen to show the apparatus of the present invention, there appears only a' part of the frame 10 and the nail-driving mechanism, includingthe dieblock 12, in the nail-receiving openings 14 of which operate drivers 16 mounted upon the top girt 18 recipro'cated by side rods 20. About one of these side rods is mounted an arm 22, carrying a loader-block 24 and arranged to oscillate from a position in which it receives a load of nails to one in which it delivers these to the;(hemlock-openings 1-4.
To furnish successive loads of nails to the loader-block, there may be employed an apparatus of the general character of that appearing in Patent No. 1,325,751, hereinbefore mentioned. This has a frame 26 supported upon the heeler-fra-me at one side of the die-block, and having at its top a horizontal plate 28, Over which is guided for reciprocation a carriage 30 adapted to support, in ways into which it may he slid, a nail-holding block 32. Extending transversely of the block are sets of openings 33 disposed in a series longitudinally of said block, each set being arranged to receive a group of nails standing with one extremity upon a retaining plate or shutter 84 mounted to slide in ways upon the under side of the block. The number of openings in each set corresponds to the number of nails by which a single heel is to be attached, and of these sets in the longitudinal series there are as many can be conveniently provided to furnish without change the maximum number of successive loads. At the forward end of the carriage is carried a spring-actuated latch 36 extending normally into the path of the block as it is held in the carriage, this latch serving to correctly locate the block for the initial delivery of a set of nails, and at the same time being movable to permit its introduction or withdrawal. Ratchet mechanism 38 mounted upon the frame 26 and upon the carriage 30, and actuated by the loader-arm 22 when this is swung to nail-recei 'ing position, causes the deliverycarriage to be moved in steps from the rear to the front of the frame, and the sets of delivery-block openings 33 to be brought. one by one into registration with a like number of openings 40 formed through the top plate 28 of the frame. After the block has been placed in its supporting carriage at the outer extreme of its path, these are pushed rearwardly to the opposite end of the plate 28. During this travel, which is in preparation for the delivery of the contained nails, an actuating pin 42, which projects into contact with the rear edge of the shutter, retains this shutter against movement. Consequently, the nails are left supported by the frame-plate for delivery, row by row, to the openings 40. In the present instance, the pin 42 is arranged for reciprocation by an eccentric connection to one extremity of. a horizontal spindle 44 mounted to rotate upon the plate 28. Normally, as just explained, the pin occupies a position to receive the contact of the plate. but it may be moved away from this by means of a handle 46 which is fixed upon the forward end of the spindle convenient for control by the operator. From the openings 40 the nails are guided by conduits 48 to a foot plate 50, through openings in which they are delivered to the loader-block 24.
Extending transversely across the rear of the frame 26 is a frame-portion 52 provided with ways to receive a carriage 54 furnishing a magazine organized to selectively supply any one of a plurality of nail-blocks to the delivery-carriage 30. The carriage 54 is divided by transverse partitions into spaces, the width of each of which is such as to just receive one of the nail-blocks. At their rear edges, these blocks are held against displacement in the carriage-spaces by stoppins 58, while they are held against accidental forward movement by spring retaining members 60, 60 located at each side of the spaces upon the partitions 5G. The carriage 54 may be moved to bring any block which it carries into alinement with the ways of the delivery-carriage. This I have shown as accomplished by gearing consisting of a rack 62 fixed upon the under side of the carriage 5i and hai 'ing meshing with it a pinion 64 upon a spindle 66. This spindle is mounted in a horizontal position to turn upon the frame, and has at its forward extremity a hand-wheel 68. through which it may be rotated by the operator. Associated with the hand-wheel is index means, here shown as consisting of deprcs sions formed about the periphery of the wheel, with which depressions co-operates a springdatch 71 mounted upon the frame. The hand-wheel depressions are so located that when any one of them is engaged by the latch, a particular block-receiving space in the magazine-carriage will be alined with the delivery-carriage 30 in such a manner as to permit. the block contained in the space to be moved directly from one carriage into the other. The depressions 70 may have associated with them at 72 designations, each indicating the length of the nails which the block in the corresponding carriage-space is to hold.
To effect the transfer of the blocks be tween the carriages. there is shown as longitudinally movable in brackets 74 rising from the carriage 30, a horizontal spindle 76. From the rear of this spindle depends an arm 78 having threaded through it, and a rranged for cooperation with the end of a block 32, a contact-screw 8O fixed in position by a lock-nut. At the oppositeor forward end of the spindle 76 an upwardly projecting handle 82, while below the handle is an arm 84 fast upon the spindle. Extending rcarwardly from the arm 84. in alinement with the screw is a contacta-od 86. A spring 88, extending between the hub of the arm 78 and one of the brackets 74, exerts its tension to hold the spindle normally in its forward relation. Between the opposed ends of the screw 80 and rod 86 is a space just sufficient to receive a nail-block. The length of the spindle 76 and the relation of the elements projecting therefrom to the supporting brackets are such that the arms 78 and 84 may be moved from a position in which they cooperate with opposite ends of a block in the magazine-carriage to one in which such block is seated in the delivery-carriage against the stop 36, and the reverse. Rotation of the spindle permits the arms to be turned to one side and upwardly clear of the blocks, or downwardly for engagement therewith of the contact-screw and rod. This rotation is permitted only when the spindle is in its rearward position, at other times being prevented by a pin 89 projecting into a slot 90 extending longitudinally of the maehine, of a plurality of nail-bloek-earriages movable thereon, one of whieh earriages is arranged to deliver a nail-block to another, and means mounted upon one of the earriages tor etlerting the delivery.
