This invention relates to combined spout and spray fixtures, and is more partlcularly related to 'a fixture including a single valve for controlling the mixing of hot and cold water and for delivering the same to either a spout mounted within a bathtub or the like, below the fixture, and to a shower or spray head mounted above the fixture.
In my co-pending application for combination spout and spray fixture, filed June 23, 1926, Serial No. 117,951, I have shown and described a combination spout and spray fixture, including an ejector device and a pair of valves for controlling the admission of hot and cold water to the ejector device, the "ejector device being connected with a bathtub spout and with ashower head in such a mane ner that, when the hot and cold water are admitted to the ejector device, the mixed water is prevented from backing up into the shower head by the ejector device.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved form of fixture of the same type which includes only a single valve for controlling the hot and cold water and the mixing thereof. I
Another object of this invention is to provide a combined spout and spray fixture including a single casting adapted to be connected at the o posed branches to hot and cold water supp y pipes, and also providing a mixing chamber and an ejector device communicating' with the mixing chamber, the single casting being connected [at a second pair of opposed branches with a shower head above the casting and a spout mounted below the casting, and having a diverting valve mounted therein.
Another object of this invention is to rovide a combined spout and spray fixture which includes only a single valve for the control of the mixing of hot and cold water to'enable a reduction of the cost of installation of such a fixture, and which also may be installed with a minimum of labor and is comparatively inexpensive in maintenance and upkeep.

In the preferred embodiment of this invention shown in the accompanying drawings, 1 illustrates a spray or shower head and 2 a spout. The spout 2 is illustrated as mounted in position to discharge water into a bathtub 3. Means are provided for mixing the hot and cold water and for controlling the flow of hot and cold water to the shower head 1 on the one end and the spout 2 on the other end, which means are preferably of the following construction: A mixing valve is provided which includes a body 4 having opposed branches 5 and 6. The branch 6, is adapted to be connected with the cold water supply pipe, and the opposed branch 5 is adapted to be connected with a hotwate'r supply pipe. "The body 4 is provided with a substantially cylindrical portion 7 which extends across the branches 5 and 6 and is provided with staggered ports 8 and 9 through which hot and cold Water is admitted into the interior of the cylindrical portion 7 of the body 4. Screw-threaded as indicated at 17 to the branch 15 is an extension cap 18. The cap 18 is provided with a packing recess 19 within which a packing cone 20 is mounted. Additional packing means may be provided such, for example, as a lead washer 21, which is mounted at the inner end of the packing cone 20 in position to engage the end face of the branch 15. In order to properly guide the stem 13 a pair of washers 22 are provided which are mounted within an annular recess formed in the branch 15, and closely fit the stem 13.
In order to adapt the fixture to be easily mounted behind a wall'23 without regard to the position of the hot and cold water supply pipes, the caps 18 is provided for a considerable portion of its length with threads23 into which a threaded nipple 24 is screw-threaded. The threaded nipple 24 is provided at 1ts outer end with an escutcheon holder 25 by -means of which the escutcheon 26 is held in position.
Preferably formed integral with the body 4 in front of the branches 5 and 6 are a pair oftransversely extending branches 27 and 28. The branch 27 is adapted to be connected by any suitable or desirable means as indicated 7 at 29, with the bathtub spout 2. The branch 28 is adapted to be connected by any suitable or desirable means such as indicated at 30 with the shower head or spray 1. Intermediate with the branches 27 and 28 there is provided within the casting a mixing chamber 31 within which the hot and cold water admitted thereto and controlled by the mixing valve is mixed prior to the same being discharged to either the spray 1 or the spout 2.

tu e 33 being rojected to slightly beyond the entrance en 34 of the passage 32 provides an ejector device which creates a suction within the passage 32 preventing the water from backing up through the passage 32, and hence from passing through the connecting means 30 and out of the spray 1 when-it is desired to discharge the water into the bathtub 3 through a spout 2. The use of this ejector device prevents all leakage of water from the spray or shower head 1 when it is not desired to employ the same for a shower.
In order to permit the hot and cold water mixed in the chamber 31 to be discharged through the spray 1 when desired, there is provided in the spout 2 diverting means 35 by means of which the water mixed within the mixing chamber 31 is prevented from discharging from the spout 2 and is hence caused to backup around the ejector device and flow through the passage 32, connecting means 30 and, hence from the spray or shower head 1.
The diverting means 35 may be of any suitable or desirable form, and are merely illus trated as comprising a disk 36 which is pivotally mounted within the spout 2 on a pin 37, to which an operating handle 38 is secured.
The disk 36 is formed to closely fit within the passage formed through the spout 2, but it is not necessary to provide at this point a leak proof valve, as a slight leakage of Water through the spout 2 when the shower head 1 is being used is not noticeable as the water from the shower head 1, in the common installation, is discharging into the bathtub 3.
Means are provided for'indicating the mixture of water bein obtained within the mixing chamber 31 t rough the mixing valve, which means are preferably of the following construction: The escutcheon 26 which is held in position by means of the escutcheon holder 25 on the outer face the wall 23, is provided around its periphery with indicating marks or words such as illustrated at 39. The handle 40 which is secured to-the stem 13 of the mixing valve is provided with an indicating arrow 41, and by means of the indicating arrow 41 and words 39 the user is enabled to set the handle 40 to give him approximately the desired temperature of his shower or bath.
'Having fully described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood thatI do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, and my invention is of the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
,1. In a device. of the class described, the combination of a body having a pair of inlet branches and a pair o,f outlet branches, a mixing valve for controlling the inlet branches an ejector deviceformed ithin the body and connecting with a mixing chamber formed within the body, a spray head connected with one of the outlet branches, :1 spout connected with the other outlet branch, and a diverting ply pipes, an ejector device operably connect ed with the mixing valve outlet, means connecting the mixing valve outlet with the spray head, means connecting the mixing valve outlet with the spout, and a diverter valve operable in opened position to emit water to pass through said spout an in closed position to cause said water to pass through said head.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a mixing valve,hot and cold water supply pipes connected with the mixing valve, an ejector device operably connected with the outlet of said mixing valve, a 20 spray head, means connecting the spray head in position above and with the mixing valves, a spout, means connecting the spout with the mixing valve, and a diverter valve operably connected with said spout.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a mixing valve having hot and cold water inlets, an ejector device operably connected with said mixing valve, the mixing valve having an outlet communicating with a spray head, and an outlet communicating with a spout, and a diverting valve to transfer the flow of water either through the. s out or through the spray head.
