I Application filed December My invention relates to improvements in hand trucks, and the object of my improvement is to supply a convenient device of this class particularly adapted for use in handling milk-cans or other articles.

This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan of my improved hand truck, and Fig. 2 isa side elevation thereof.

My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, nor to the various details thereof, as the same may be modified or rearranged in various particulars Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, one practical embodiment of which has been herein illustrated and described without attempting to show all of the various forms and modifications in which my invention might be embodied.

My improved hand truck comprises a forwardly opening U-shaped. frame 1, whose limbs are bent terminally outwardly in alinement transversely, thence downwardly, and

' thence again outwardly and diminished to provide spindles to receive the carrying wheels 2 rotatably thereon. On the middle of the rear reach of the frame 1 is secured a depending bearing socket in which the shank of an offset caster-wheel 3 is rockingly mounted. rendering the frame dirigihle.

Upon the frame limbs just to thercar of their angles of bending outwardly, vertical standards are afiixed to the limbs at 4, and a forwardly opening U-shaped anglebar yoke 5 has its forward terminations apertured whereby it is sildably mounted upon said standards. The terminations of said yoke have outwardly projecting parts 6 and spaced pairs of arms 9 are pivotally mounted on opposite sides thereof on bolts 26. The inner ends of said arms project inwardly beyond the standards 4 and then bent oppositely with the terminations secured to arcuate clamping members 7 upon whose inner faces are secured rubber or other friction members 8. The clamping members 78 are disposed in transverse alinement between the standards 4.

The outer parts of the arms 9 have spacing bodies 10 between them and which bodies and the arms are apertured in alinement to seat the securing pintle-bolts 13. Each spacing body 10 has a depending flange 15, and the TRUCK.

upper ends of depending links 12 are pivoted on these flanges by pivot-bolts 11.

The numeral 1'? denotes a rearwardly and upwardly projecting handle whose rear part is U-shaped opening forwardly, the members whereof are medially widened to provide parallel longitudinal terminations whose forward parts 16 are curved upwardly and pivoted at 18 on pins projected outwardly from short hangers 19 fastened on the side members of the frame 1. The forward ends of these parts 16 are pivotally connected at 14 to the lower ends of the links 12.

On each side member of the frame 1 an arcuate rack-bar 20 is fixed, projecting upwardly, and engageable by detents 24 controlled by springs 23, and mounted slidably on the inner faces of the handle members, the connecting-rods 22 to the detents having their rear ends pivoted to hand levers 21 are pivoted on the handle bar rear side parts.

The dotted lines in Fig. 1 denote a top plan of a milk-can positioned centrally within the yoke 5, the clamping members 7-8 being spread apart therefrom. It will be seen that "the handle 17 may be rocked up or down on the pintles 18 from a middle position to opposite end positions and secured releasably by the detents 24 in either position to the rack-bars 20, the notches on the latter being numerous'enough to provide for some adj ustments therealong of the handle, and when the handle is thus secured in its middle position, the clamping member 78 have been shifted relatively to each other and the frame 1 to cause the clamping members to clasp the interposed milk-can tightly enough and adjustably, so that it may be transported from one place to another. During this operation the yoke 5 moves upwardly along the standards 4. When the detents are released from the rack-bars, the handle 17 may be rocked in one direction to cause the operatingconnections to shift the clamping members 78 outwardly to release the milk-can which may be deposited at the desired location. The truck may be used, when made on a larger scale, to transport barrels or other obj ects which can be received and clamped within the yoke 5.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A hand truck, comprising a forwardly recessed frame mounted upon dirigible means for transportation and having erect fixed standards upon opposite sides, a forwardly opening yoke with apertured limbs slidably mounted upon the standards, ahandle having furcations tiltably mounted upon the 5 frame, clamping members mounted in transverse alinement rockingly upon the 'terminations of the yoke within the standards, and operating connections between the clamping members and the handle fin-cations, whereby tilting of the handle will occasion respective i recessed frame mounted upon dirigible means for transportationand having erect fixed standards upon opposite sldes, a forwardly opening yoke with apertured limbs slidably mounted upon the standards, a handle having furoations tiltably mounted upon the frame, clamping members mounted in transverse alinement rockingly upon the terminations of the yoke within the standards, operating connections between the clamping members and the handle furcations, whereby tilting oi" the handle will occasion respective movements of the clamping members toward or from each other to clamp or to release an interposed object, and. means for releasably adjustably holding said handle in different tilted positions.
