Description

n. SEYMOUR. BOLTS FOR W'INDOW-FASTENINGS. Etc.
Patented Jan. 4,v 1876.

UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoE,
HERBERT SEYMOUR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS FOR WINDOW-FASTENINGS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 171,701, dated January 4, 1876 application filed November 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT SEYMOUR, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Bolt or Safety Window-Fastening, of which the following is a specification: 1
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved fastening, shown as applied to the sashes of a window; and Fig. 2 is an end view-of the same, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding'parts.
' The main object of this invention is to furnish an improved fastening for windows which shall be so constructed that it cannot be unfastened from the outside of the window, and
which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
'The invention consists in the combination of the guard pin'or stem with the bolt and slotted bolt, socket, or keeper, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the top railof the lower sash, and B the bottom rail of the upper sash, of a window. To the middle part of the top rail Ais attached a keeper, G,in which worksabolt, D, the knob-stem d of which passes out through a slot in the said keeper. In the keeper 0 are formed notches for the stem d to drop into when the bolt D is pushed out and when it is drawnback. E is the slotted socket-plate or keeper, which is attached to the bottom railB of the upper sash, in such a position that the bolt D, when pushed out, will enter it. To the forward part of the bolt D, and in line with the knob-stem d, is attached a stem or pin, d which, when the bolt D is pushed out,
passes through a slot in the socket E, and
when the knob d is turned down moves along the inner side of the said socket E, or into a notch formed in said socket.
By this construction the stem or pin (1 prevents the bolt D from being pushed back by any instrument inserted between the sashrails A B, and thus renders it impossible to unfasten the window from the outside.
The pin or stem d may have a small ornamental knob attached to its outer end, 'if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A guard pin on the projecting end of a sliding bolt, in combination, and engaging, with a slotted keeper, as and for the purpose specified.
