FIRE SAFETY DEVICE.
Application filed November 7, 1927. Serial No. 231,532.
This invention relates to a new and novel fire safety device adapted for the purpose of rescuing persons, valuables or the like from a burning building, or from mines, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a fire safety device of novel construction and arrangement of parts, and a means of raming and lowering the said elevator up and down the side of a building.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and appended claims and to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of my 1mproved device, as same would appear when in use.
Fig. 2 is a similar fragmentary view, illustrating in particular the elevator lifting mechanism as embodied in my improved device.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevational view of the elevator as embodied in my improved device.

provided with a handle 13, or crank.
The above mentioned mechanism is mounted in the bracket 14 with vertical sides, which is secured to the roof of a building 15, adjacent to, the wall thereof. The window member 16 is hinged as at 17 and 18 to extensions 14 projecting from the said sides of bracket 14. The bracket 14 extends slightly beyond the front of the building. The fleXiblemember 19 is attached to a lever .16 rigidly attached to the window 16 below as the ivots thereof is extended downwardlr; therefrom a tubular member 29,
secured to the outer wall of the said building, leading to the box 21 secured to the said outer wall adjacent to the ground. The box 21 has sli'dably mounted therein a door 22, held in a closed position by the wire 23. The handle 24 or ring, issecured to the lower. free extremity of the flexible member 19 and is normally positioned inside the said box 21. j The flexible member 25 is normally wound around the drum 10 and is attached thereto, being of suitable length to extend from the drum. to the ground. The weight 26 is attached to the free extremity of the flexible member 25 and is normally positionedinside the housing 14, resting against the window 16.
The above described construction and the manipulation thereof is as follows: In'event of a fire, the wire 23 is broken, the door 22 opened, the handle 24..is then pulled, for
drawing downwards on the flexible member 19 and pivotingthe member 16 so that the lower portion moves away from the roof of the building, causing the weight 26 to fall to the ground, which when falling makes a -noise to arouse the occupants of the building,
serving as a fire alarm. It is obvious that the weight 26 will extend the flexible member 25 from the drum 10 to the round, for the purpose as hereinafter set forth.
The elevator 27 is of box-like construction, of any desirable size or dimension adapted to accommodate a number of persons and valuables, and is divided into side compartments 28 and 29, adapted to accommodate the above mentioned person, and a central compermit the said people to leave the elevator when reaching the ground. A similar door 38 1s hinged as at 39,'to'the front side of the elevator, so as to permit access to the mechanism mounted in the said central compartment thereof. A plurality of rollers 40 are rotatively mounted in the lug elements 42 and; as, of the rear slde of the elevator, and.
- raised and lowered.
The drum 48 is rotatively mounted on the shaft 44, carried by the supports 45, positioned in the central compartment and is provided with a handle 46, or crank, as a means of rotating the drum 43. The flexible member 47 is attached to the drum 43, and extended upwardly therefrom through an opening provided in the roof, or top member of the elevator. The latter described construction is such as will permit the free extremity of the flexible member 25, when lowered to the ground, as hereinbefore set forth to be secured to the extended extremity of the fleXible member 47, so as to permit the elevator to be raised, so as to allow persons to enter the elevator, from the various rooms of the building. Drums 10 and 48 may be in 'd ividually operated or simultaneously 0p erated for moving the elevator. I
A similar drum 48 is secured to the shaft 49, rotatively mounted on the said supports 45and is provided with a handle 50 or crank; as a means of rotating the said drum 48. The flexible member 51 is normally wound on the drum 48 and. is of suitable length to ex tend therefrom through the door 52, hinged as at 53, thru the roof of the elevator, and to the roof of the building, and is secured thereto, as a means of permitting the said elevator to" be raised and lowered in lieu of the above described mechanism, which is secured to. the roof of the building.
Itwillbe also understood that the free extremity of theflexible member 25, when extended to the-ground as above set forth may be secured to the roof of an adjacent build ing, or to any suitable portion thereof, so as to be approximately horizontally extended. The conveyor 54 comprises a pair of members, having pulleys 55 and 56, rotatively mounted intermediate thereof, adapted to engage the flexible member 25. The eyelets 57 are secured to the conveyor 54 as a means of attaching flexible members 47 thereto, to which is secured the free extremity of the flexible member 47. The latter described construction is such as will permit the elevator 27 to transport people from the building on fire to the said adjacent building.
I have also provided a flexible member 58 engaged through eyelets 59 secured to the roof of-the elevator 27, and secured as at 60, to the central portion of the said roof, to which the free extremity of the flexible member 25, may be attached in event it is desired to raise or lower the elevator from thesai-d mechanism attached to the roof of the buildmg.
It is also understood that the flexible member 61 normally extended over the hooks 62 and 68, secured to the front side of the elevator, is adapted to be attached at one extremity to any desired portion of an adjacent building 15, the other extremity being attached to any desired portion of the burning building 15 approximately horizontally extended, by means of hooks 64 and 65 se cured to the said bracket '11 and to the wall of the said adjacent building 15 so as to perniit the persons in the said elevator to pull the elevator when extended from the conveyor, as above set forth, to and from the said burning building as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a'safety device of the class described,
an elevator adapted to accommodate persons, a drum rotatively mounted therein, a flexible member wound on the said drum and extended through an opening formed in the roof of the said elevator, said flexible member being secured to the roof of a building, as a means of raising and lowering the said elevator, a second drum rotatively mounted in the said elevator, a second flexible member attached to the said second drum and extended therefrom,'said second flexible member being secured to the free extremity of a flexible member attached to a drum rotatively mounted on the roof of a building, as a means of raising and lowering the said elevator from the roof of the said building or from the said elevator.
2. In a safety device of the class described, a bracket with vertical sides mounted on the top of a building, a window member pivotally supported on the vertical sides, a drum rotatively mounted insaid bracket, a flexible member attached to and wound around said drum, a weight removably attached to the free end of said drum and adapted to normally rest upon the bottom of the window member, means connected with said Window member and extending downwardly from the top of said building for rotating sald Window member to permit said weight to descend for extending said flexible member to the ground, an elevator comprising a casing having spaced apart rear doors adapted to register with the windows of said buildings, rollers on said casing for retaining saidelevator in spaced relation to the walls of said building, a drum in said elevator, and a flexible member attached to said second mentioned drum adapted to be extended through the roof of said elevator and attached to said first mentioned flexible member when said weight is removed for facilitating raising and lowering of said elevator by simultaneous manipulation of said drums.
A safety device of the class described comprising a-drum'rotatively mounted on the top of a building, an elevator comprising a casing having rollers thereon adapted to engage the wall of said building for retaining the casing in spaced relation to the said Wall,
rear doors in said casing adapted to register with spaced apart Windows in said building for permitting persons to step from said WindoWs directly into said casing, a drum rotatively mounted in said casing, and a flexible member comprising one section attached to said first mentioned drum and a second section attached to said second mentioned drum adapted to be connected for facilitating raisl0 ing and lowering of said elevator by simultaneousmanipulation of said drums.
