PATENT OFFICE.
COSTON SMITH BAKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION SOLITAIRE AND PLAY BOARD.
Application filed. March 12, 1928. Serial r... 260,846.
This invention relates to a combination play board and has for its object the provision of an adjustable board of this character constructed to form a convenient support and frame for playing solitaire with cards and further adapted by simple manipulation to provide a flat surface for playing checkers or other games. A- further object is the" provision of .a card rack which" is adapted to support the cards in convenient position for access and reference by the playef, and which is 'mounted at the proper angle to a base member so as to permit the board to be conveniently held upon the lap of the player or supported when the player is in a reclining position, for example. Furthermore, the invention aims to provide a board of this character which is scribed and claimed.
portable and easily handled and which serves the double purpose of providing a fiat play board or a solitaire card rack elevated at a convenient an le to a base member so as to be more com ortable and convenient than solitaire boards heretofore used, and to per mit the conversion from one form of board into the other form by a simple manipulation.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be also folded into compact form and thus be more conveniently handled or transported when not in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de- The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawin forming a part of this specification, and 1n which,
Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview of the board arranged for playing solitaire as with ordinary playing cards;
' Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on a reduced scale,
of the board arrangement shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reverse sides shown in Fig. 1, when the device is converted into a flat play board, and showing squares marked thereon for the playing of checkers and chess, for example;
larged scale, of the arrangement shown in edge 18 at the rear of the member 8 when members 7 and 8 are in extended position as shown in Fig. 4. In this position, the boardv .Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the device in folded position so as to occupy a minimum of.
space.
- The preferred embodiment of the invention and also. serves as a suitable as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a member v7 and a member 8 which are adjustable with respect to each other to suit the purlower edge of each of these pockets is a step 1 portion 10 between the ledge 11 and the face of member 7. Thus in playing certain well known games of solitaire, some of the cards in each pocket may rest upon the ste 10 and the remainder of .the cards upon the edge 11.
Generally it is necessary to have buttwo cards facing outwardly in each pocket, that 1s, the highest card and the lowest' card of those which face outwardly. Obviously, additional steps may be provided in case the player desires or the particular game requires that more than two cards in each pocket face outwardly.
Preferably disposed above the row of pockets just described, is a second row formed between portions 12. In the present embodiment, four pockets are shown in this row, inasmuch as thls is the requisite number for certain popular games of solitaire and in this series of pockets the step portions are omitted and the cards are adapted to rest upon. ledges 13.
A link 14 is pivotally connected at one end to a bracket 15 mounted upon the member 8 and the opposite end of link 14 is pivotally connected to the edge of member 7 at 16. An identical construction is provided at the opposite side of the device. Link 14 is preferably of suflicient length to permit a swinging action between members 7 and 8 and a stop 19 is mounted upon the member 18, against which the lower edge of member 7 is adapted to rest, and stop 19 is positioned so as togive .any desired angle or elevation to member 7 As will be seen, in this arrangement member 8 serves as a convenient support for the device when held upon't'he lap, for example, platform for shuffling and dealing out the cards.
Provided at the lower edge of member 7 is a longitudinally extending groove 17, preferably right-angled in cross section, which is adapted to make a tight fit with square is reversed for play purposes, and presents illustrated, the outline of a checker board is reproduced, one-half on the reverse side of member 7 and half on the reverse side of member 8 to provide a complete checker ,7
board when the members are extended as shown in Fig. 3. IVhen not in use or when it is desired to pack or transport the device,v the article may be folded as shown in Fig.
5 by lifting member 7 away from stop 19 and allowing it to rest upon member 8.
The improved device is particularly adapted for use in hospitals, sanitariums, clubs, etc., inasmuch as in playing solitaire the board may be set aside should the player be interrupted and the game resumed without disturbing the cards. In addition, the device is readily converted from a solitaire board into a flat surface board in which form it may be used by two or more persons for a variety of games and because of the construction, the device may be readily and conveniently carried from place to place.
Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not desire to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but wish to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.1. A device of the class described comprising, in combination, a member provided with a pluralit of pockets for playing solitaire on one si e and having a substantially flat surface on the opposite side, a second member swingably connected to said first member and adapted to act as a support in one adjustment and as a continuation of a substantially flat playing surface in a second adjustment.
2. A device of the class described coniprising, in combination, a member provided with a plurality of pockets for playing solitaire with playing cards, a second member adjustable at an angle to said first member for supporting said first member, and link connections between said members permitting them to be extended to present a substantial flat playing surface.
3. A device of the class described comprising, in combination, a member provided with a plurality of pockets for playing solitaire with playing cards on one side and provided with a portion of a checker board outline on the opposite side, a second member adjust-able at an angle to said first member and having a portion of the checker board outlined on one side, and links connecting said members permitting them to be extended to present a complete checker board outline in a second adjustment. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
