. 7 WRENCH;
I Application fiiea m 1, 1927. Serial no. 202,862.
This invention aims to provide a simple three-piece wrench embodying novel means for holding the movable jaw in'adjusted positions with respect to the fixed jaw.
Figure 1 is a side elevation; Figure 2 is an elevation wherein the wrench is viewed edge,- wise; Figure 3 is a section showing one side of the movable jaw; Figure 4 is a section showing the opposite side of the movable jaw;
Figure 5 is a sectionon the line 55 '01: Fig
ure 1; and Figure 6 in a section on the line G6 of Figure 1. In all the views, parts of Y The wrench includes a body 1, made up of a handle'2, an enlarged head 3 on the handle,
and a fixed jaw 4: on the head. There is a slot 5 in the head, across which the aw 4 extends, the jaw serving as a connection betweenside wings 6 and 7 that are formed byrthe slot 5. On the inner surface of the flange 6 ,there is a guide groove 8. The flanges 6 and 7 have lines of coaxial holes '9, the lines of holes'being parallel to the groove 8. The flange 7 has an off-set external lip 10 defining an elongated seat 11, the lip and the seat being disposed parallel to the guide groove 8.
The movable jaw is marked by the numeral 12 and has a thinned fin lwhich slides in the slot 5 in the head of the wrench, the fin forming shoulders 15 on each side oft-he tin, the
shoulders sliding on the edges of the flanges I or wings 6 and 7. The fin 14::has a rib 16' which is received slidably in the guide groove 8. The fin 14 is provided with 'openings 1.7 adapted to register, one at a time, with the I holes 9 in the body of the wrench.
The movable jaw 12 is shifted toward and from the fixed jaw 4:, until the required adjustment hasbeenobtained, and then a tapered securing element (pin) 18 is inserted through the openings 17 and 9 which happen tobe alined. The securing element or pin 18 has a handle 19 which swings parallel to the wing 7, in contactv with, the body 'ofthe wrench. The handleis supplied, on opposite sides of the axis of the pin 18, with projecting fingers 20 which are beveled as shownat 21 to form cams which, when either one of the fin gers 20 is engaged beneath the liplO, crowd it the tapered pin 18 intolthe holes 17 and 9, to
hold the movablejaw 12 in the position to which it has been adjusted; It is possible to swing the handle. 19 into such a position that neither of the fingers 20 will be engaged under lip 10, and then he pin 18 can be removed I to permit the movable-jaw 12 to be shifted withrespect to the'fixed jaw 1-. 'Thereis an advantage in having the duplicated, opposite-.
ly disposed, lingers 20. When the pin. 18 is in a position near to theright hand end-of the line or" holes 9 in Figure 1, one of the fingers 20 may be engaged beneath thelip 10, with, v i
the handle 19 to the left, and when the pin 18 20 can be engaged under the lip 10, with the is mounted near to the left hand end of the LOW of holes 9 in Fig 1 the other finger,
handle 19 extending to the ri ht; and in this way, the handle'19fcan be so placed that it will not stick out beyond the edgeoi" the head 3 of the wrench. V
Whatis claimed is A wrench the body of which has a fixedjaw v.
and an elongated external lip, a movablejaw cooperating with theflxed aw and slidable on the wrench body, the body and a part of the movable aw having holes adapted to be brought into registration, and a pin insertible into the holes and provided-with a handle, the handle being provided oneach side with a finger, either fingerbeingeng'ageableunder the "vent the handle from projecting beyond til-3" edge of the wrench. when the pin 15; located near to one edge of the wrench,- the edgesoti so 1 lip, to hold the pin in place, the provision of two fingers permitting the handle .to -be i turned in opposite directions, thereby to pre' the fingers being so inclined with respect to 1 each other that either finger may be 'disen; f
to be withdrawn;
my own, I have hereto affixed my signature;
'aged from the lip, thereby to permit the pin, I 7. In testimony that Iclai n the foregoing as .,W1LLIAM PETERSON;
