Application filed October 1, 1927. Serial no. 223,430. I
This invention relates to type swaging machines and particularly to mechanism for holding type blanks on. bars and feeding them into cooperative relation with the dies, and then ejecting them after the swaging operation has been performed.
One object of the invention is the provision of means for automatically clamping the blanks orbars in position on a head as they are moved into cooperative relation with the dies.
Another object is the provision of means for automatically releasing the clamps as the clamping head is moved away from the dies after the swaging operation hasbeen performed.
Other objects will be apparent from the following. description taken in connection with the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the clamping head.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the clamping head, with a part of one of the arms of the head broken away.
Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the arms of the clamping head.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 3
'Fig. 5 shows the means for alining the;
head as it is moved into swaging position.
The drawings show only so much of the machine as is necessary to disclose this improvement.
The shaft 10, (Figs. 1 and 2),is mounted in a carriage 11 slidable ona support12.
Means, not disclosed, is providedlfor moving the carriage to the right to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and then to'the left to its home position. Any suitable rack and gearing construction may be provided to rotate the shaft one-quarter turn clockwise, (Fig. 2) as the carriage is moved toward the left to its home position.
The shaft 10 carries a clamping head 15 provided with four arms 16 of identical construction. j
Each arm 16 carries a clamp housing 17 suitably secured thereto by screw bolts 18, (Fig. Each housing is provided with two recesses 20 receiving pairs of clamping blocks 21 and 22 pressed apart by springs 23 suitably anchored to'the block 22 as shown in Fig. 4;. The block 22 is held stationary v by a screw bolt 24 passing through the housinglZJ The block 21 is movedtoward'the block 22 by a wedge 25 which cooperates with an edge of the block and a wedge face v I EJE'SAsi rarest crates.
26 constituting one side of the recess 20; v
The blocks 21 and 22 are provided with cooperatlng wedge faces 27 and 28 to force the block 21 laterally as it is forced toward the block 22, the block 21 being shorter than the recess 20 to permit such movement. The blocks 21 and 22 define blank holding recesses 29. The construction is such that blanks.
their respective blocks21 by a double wedge faced plunger 30, (Figs. 2 and 3), suitably guided in a slot in the housing and repressure will be applied to four sides of the i tained therein by alimiting screw bolt 31 se 1 cured inthe housing and cooperating with a slot in the plunger. The plunger isv normally urged into its outer position by a spring 32 mounted in a hole in the housing and suitably retained therein by a screw plug 33. 4 p
One end of the plunger 30 projects through the housing and is provided with a head 35 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3), cooperating with the end of a plate 36, secured to raised seats 37 on the support 12 by bolts 38 and constantly urged downwardly by springs 39 on bolts 40 screwed into said seats.
The plate 36, (Figs. 1 and 2), bears on cylindrical fulcrum rods 44 seated in correspondingly formed recesses in the plate 36 and seats 37 at a point midwaybetween the bolts". 38 and 40. The
bolts 38'and 10 are equipped with adjusting nuts 15 by means of which the plate36 may be adjusted about a horizontalaxis and the W proper compression placed on the springs 39. Lock nuts 46 cooperate with the nuts 45130 maintain such adjustment.
The left hand end of the plate 36, (Fig. 2), is provided with a wedge face 50 against which the head 35 of the plunger. 30 is moved as the clamping head 15 is moved into the swaging position shown in Figs. land 2. The wedge face 50 depresses the plunger 30 and, as is apparentfromFig; 3, clamps the blanks securely in position for the swaging operation. The springs 39 hold the plunger depressed until the clamping head is moved toward the left. i
After the swaging has been performed, the clamping blocks 2-1 are"perm'itted to be moved into their releasing position by the springs 23. As the clamping head is .lllOVGtlhOWVfll'd the left, the plunger head is moved away from the plate 36 and the plunger 30 is restored by its spring 32. This frees the wedges 25, (Fig. 3) ,which may now be moved toward each other to release the blocks 21 by plungers 54 .suitably supported in the clamp housing 17, each having its inner end engaging the small end of its corresponding'wedge 25 and its outer end pro-I jeeting beyond the housing and provided with a conical head-55 to wedgingly engage with wedges56, (Figs. 1 and 2) on the support 12 as the clamping head 15 is rotated during its movement to the left into its home position. This permits the sWaged type bars to drop out of the clamping blocks.
Each clamping arm 16 is suitably recessed to receive two ejecting plunger-s60, (Figs.
'1, 2 and 3), each of which as shown in Fig.
I f 8,.over-lies the recesses 29 in a pair of blocks I tated counter-clockwise.
the center of this figure.
"2'1 and 22. Cooperating with the pair of plungers in each arm 16 is a plunger 61, (Figs. 1 and 2) slidably mounted in the arm with its ends projecting beyond the lat- "eral sides of the arm.
As shown in Fig. 1, the carriage 11 is provided with a wedge-piece 62 suit-ably secured v thereto as by, screw bolts 63 and which cooperates with the upper end of the plunger 61. as viewed in Fig. 1 to move the plunger v61 into the position'shown in the center of this figure as the-clamping head 15 is ro- The plunger 61 is provided with a head 64 having one of its sides' shaped to conform to the periphery of the hub, (Fig. 2), on the clamping head to hold the plunger against rotation. The
plunger 61 is recessed at 65 to cooperate with the rounded ends of the ejector plungers 60. As shown in the left of Fig. 1, the plungers 60 are in their moved position. .As shown in the right hand part of this figure, the plungers 60 are in their retracted position. This position they were permitted to'assume 'when'the blanks were inserted with the arm 16' under the wedging piece 62 as shown in After the swaging has been performed, the clamping head is withdrawn and rotated. As it is rotated,-a wedging piece 66, (Figs. 1 and 2), on the support 12 raises the plunger 61 which moves the plungers 60 radially outwardly and ejects the swaged type bars.

suitably secured thereto by screw bolts 68.
