WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed March 14, 1928. Serial No. 261,666.
The invention relates to washing machines, and particularly to that type very generally in use for household use, which is known as the dolly, or agitator type. The object of the improvement is to provide a simple and practical means for machines of that kind to empty themselves of the washing fluid by their own power upon the completion of the washing operation.
The principle of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of the tub and washing mechanism of a machine of the type described. the agitator in this case being of the submerged type. Figure-2 is a horizontal cross-section through the lower part of machine and the pump mechanism which constitutes the improvement herein described.
Describing the parts by reference characters, 1 represents the receptacle or tub, in Which, the tub containing a suitable quantity of cleaning fluid, the washing is accomplished by means of the agitator 3, which is driven by the shaft 2 with a reciprocating rotary motion, revolving back and forth for a space of about one-half a revolution, or a little more, in either direction. 4 is a stationary vertical tube, enclosing the drive shaft 2, supporting the agitator 3 at its upper end, and rigidly fixed at its lower end to the member 5, which forms partof the bottom of washing tub. 14 is a removable bushing encircling the tube 4, forming a bearing for the lower end of the agitator 3, and holding in place the member 7 of pump mechanism, which will now be described.
The pump mechanism consists of a stationary member and a rotatable member. The stationary member 5 is in the form of a hollow cylinder, open at its top, which is fixed to the bottomof the receptacle or washing tub 1, of which it forms a continuation, and having a circular central core which is pierced for the passage of the drive shaft 2, and to which core the vertical tube 4 is rigidly fixed. Its horizontal surface, or floor, is pierced by the orifice 8, about which is formed a vertical U-shaped partition 12, which may be formed integrally with, or immovably fixed to the member 5.. 11 is a-shuter, or valve, one end of which is fixed to the vertical face of the core of the memebr 5, its other, or free end projecting between the parallel walls of the U-shaped partition 12. v
The rotatable member 7 is in the form of an inverted hollow cylinder, open at its bottom, perforated in its top surface so as to rotate about the tube 4, and having a rectangular opening in its vertical wall. At each vertical edge of this opening are fixed the two shutters, or valves, 9 and 10, with of the agitator 3 is transmitted -'to the member 7 when it is desired to actuate the pumpmechanism.
The shutters, or valves, 9, 10, and 11 are actuated automatically by the pressure of the fluid contained within the pump, the reciprocal rotation of the member 7 causing the shutters 9 and 10 to close alternately against the radial partition, or impeller, 13' at the same time the shutter 11 closes in an opposite direction alternately against the parallel walls of the U-shaped partition 12, and discharging the fluid under pressure through the orifice 8.
A flexible tube, 'or hose, 15, of suitable length, is connected to the orifice 8 to convey the discharging fluid to the wash tray, sink, or other receptacle in which it is desired to discharge the waste fluid.
I claim: 7
'1. In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle, a reciprocating rotary agitator placed vertically therein, a cylindrical chamber placed vertically within the receptacle and concentrically about the axis of the agitator, a radial impeller within the cylindrical chamber, rotatable therein in unison with the agitator, a valvular opening between the chamber and the receptacle, and a valvular opening leading from the chamber through the wall of the receptacle.
2. In a washing machine, the combination 'of a receptacle, a reciprocating rotary agitator placed therein, a chamber placed within the receptacle and concentrically about the axis of the agitator, an impeller within the chamber and movable in unison with the agitator, an opening between the chamber and the receptacle, and an opening leading from thechambe -tlirough the wall ofthe receptacle.
3. In a washing machine comprising a receptacle and a reciprocating rotary agitator vertically placed therein, the combination with said receptacle and agitator of a reciprocating rotary pump, positioned within the receptacle and concentric with the axis of the agitator, the rotatable member of said pump revolving in unison with said agitator, and said receptacle having. an opening in its wall through which water may be forced by the pump.
