NORMAN PROVOST, OF STAMFORD,-OONNEGTIOUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-SPRINGS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,319, dated December 21, 1875; application filed November 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN PROVOST, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs for Vehicles and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of buggies, wagons, and other similar carriages or vehicles, the nature of which will be fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a plan of parts of a buggy with my improvements applied thereto. Figs. 3 and 4 show detail views of one of the springs O separately.
In each of the views, similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.
A represents the box or body of a buggy or other similar carriage or vehicle, to the under side of which areconnected bearing-pieces B B, provided with lugs B 13, through which pass bolts or pins B, which form bearings for the ends of the double bent springs O.
The springs U at O are formed straight, and adapted to rest against and be held firmly to the under side ofthe thorough-braces D by means of the clamps D, while their ends 0 are curved, as shown, in such manner as to extend sidewise from the thorough-braces D and support the box or body A centrally between the thorough-braces D. The thoroughbraces D'at each end are attached to and supported by semi-elliptic springs E, carried by or supported on the front and hind axles F G.
By this peculiar construction of the supporting parts of a buggy or other similar vehicle or carriage, great ease and comfort in riding are obtained, as well as freedom from liability of damage to the springs by reason of sudden jolts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The springs 0, having the straight part 0 and the end 0 curved sidewise under the body A, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the box or body A and the thorough-braces D, of the springs (1, having the straight part 0 and the end curved sidewise under the bodyA, constructed substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the box or body A, thorough-braces D, and springs 0, having the straight part 0 sidewise under the body A, of the semi-elliptic springs E, constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NORMAN PROVOST.
