Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ROBINSON, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I7 1,172, dated December 14, 1875; application filed October 4, 1875.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. ROBINSON, of Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Oouplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, lnaking a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the i construction and arrangement of a carcoup ling, as will be hereinafter` more fully set forth. In Aorder to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to (leto couple either high or low, as required.
Above and below this partition is a chamber, b, for the-coupling-link, the two chambers being connected by a passage, b', through which the coupling-pin is to go. In the back part of the draw-head B is formed a recess or chamber, d, in which the tongue `D is placed. This tongue is of the peculiar formation as shown in Fig. 1, having at its lower end a teat or projection, c, fitting in a curved notch, fr, in the bottom of the chamber d. In the tongue D is a curved slot,, through which passes a pin, h. The tongue D does not rest on this pin, but the pin simply holds the tongue in its proper place. The front edge or side of the tongue D is cut out, as shown, to form, as it were, two projections, p p', one of which rests upon the inner end of the coupling-link when the same is in the draw-head, whether it be in the upper or lower portion thereof, thus holding the link in proper position to enter the opposite draw-.head in coupling the cars. In the top of the draw-head is an aperture, m, for the passage of the coupling-pin O, which has a short pin, k, passed through it, and projecting a short distance beyond both sides of the coupling-pin. In the lower front part of the aperture m is a shoulder, n, on which the coupling-pin O may rest when the cars are uncoupled, and it is not desired to couple them together. In the lower part of the aperture m is a short groove or recess, y, for the pin k to pass into when the coupling-pin is to be placed on the shoulder a.
When the coupling-pin G is raised, the tongue D falls forward in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that, for coupling, the couplingpin O may be supported on the upper end of the tongue, which is convex, as shown, so that when the link E enters the draw-head, either above or below the partition a, and strikes the tongue, it will readily pass from under the coupling-pin, and allow the same to fall down for coupling the cars.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tongue D, constructed as described, with front projections p p', curved slot i, and teat c, in combination with the two-mouthed draw-head B, provided with the chambers, as described, and with the recess and the tongue loosely connected therein by the pin h, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set myhand this 13th day of September, 1875.
