, Application filed J111y 31,
The present invention relates to improvements in sewer construction, and has as one of its objects to render receiving basins and conduits leading therefrom to sewers less accessible to foreign material which is found to be a source of much annoyance and expense at the present time, because of the fact that basins require frequent cleaning and conduits leading from basins to sewers become so clogged that such conduits become unable to function, and in many'instances where efforts are made to clean out conduits leaks occur in the conduits as results of such efiorts and streets or sidewalks, or both, must be dug through to repair the basin and repair or renew the conduits.
vThe invention contemplates the provision of an improved basin-cover. This cover is such as to permit the ready passage of water from the street and gutter into the basin, but to minimize or prevent the deposit of paper, leaves, stones, sticks, rags, tin cans,
etc., many of these articles and numerous others being found daily in receiving basins by cleaners of sewer systems.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a gutter, curb and sidewalk with a Figure 2 is a sectional view t line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partial plan view of the cover shown in-Figure 1 with parts shown in section;
v Figure 4 is a partial end view. of a cover and its support.
ken "on the Referring more particularly to the drawings 43 designates the cover for the basin. The cover in this instance is shownto be of rectangular construction, although it may be circular or of any other form; and the cover is shown as having a number of spaced bars intersecting one another, although it may be of any other perforated character. The cover is also shown as provided with a vertical upstanding end part 44 occupying an opening of'the curb. Trunnions 45 on the cover 43 are shown as slidably fitting into slots 46 made in the frame 47 This frame fits flush into the roadway 'sothat the cover may lie flush with the roadway also when in place on top of the basin. In this position the upright portion '44 extends ,flush within the curb. As shown more particularly in Figure 2 the curb is provided with an undercut portion to permit the upright part 44 to swing thereinto in the act of lift- 19 25. Serial No. 47,281.
.ing and rotating the cover'43, The slots 46 are wider at'their upper portions and they curve downwardly and inwardly toward the curb and they are open on the inner faces of the frame 47 and through the upper edges nions 45. The trunnions 45 both rotate'in the slots 46 and are slidable thereinto. In the act of removing the cover, the cover 43 is first tilted upwardly about thetrunnions 45, the upright part 44 swinging into the undercut portion of the curb; and thereupon the cover is lifted upwardly, the trunnions 45 guiding the upright part outwardly. The reverse movements are carried out in replacing the cover.
g It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically of such frame in order to receive said trundescribed embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is 1; In a sewer construction, a basin extending partly below the street and partly below the sidewalk and curb, said curb having an undercut portion, a frame flush with the roadway above the basin and having a supporting ledge and slots near the curb line, said slots opening through the upper edge of said frame and through the inner walls thereof and being wider at the upper portions than at the lower portions, said slots further sloping downwardly toward the curb line, and a perforated cover consisting of substantially horizontal and integral upright portions, the horizontal portion adapted to rest on the ledge in the frame flush with the roadway, the upright portion adapted to extend flush within the curb and'to move into the undercut portion of the curb wheninserting and removing the cover, said horizontal portion of the cover having trunnions adapted to enter said slots and to guide the cover inwardly of the curb in the act of inserting the same and correspondingly to shift the cover outwardly in the act of lifting the cover,
roadway above the basin and having flaring and inclined slots therein, a perforated cover having horizontal and upright portions said horizontal portion adapted to fit flush in the frame, the upright portion adapted to move and lit in the undercut portion of the curbing, and trunnions on the horizontal portion adapted to fit in said slots and to guide the cover inwardly toward the curb in the act of fitting the cover in place and to guide the cover outwardly of the curb in the act or" removing and lifting the cover, said cover extending flush with the roadway and having an extension upright portion extending flush in the curbing, said frame having slots near to the upright portion, said slots being Wider at their upper receiving portions and narrower at their lower portions, said slots also inclining from their upper wider portions downwardly toward the curb, and a perforated cover portion consisting of connected horizontal and upright portions having trunnions extending from the horizontal portion in position to enter said slots, said cover and. upright portion adapted to rotate on said trunnions.
In testiiiiony whereof I alfix my signature.
GEORGE E. EGAN.
