My invention relates to a new and useful door stop adapted to be used to retain a door or any other swinging member in the closed,
fully open or partly open position or to prevent the initial opening of the door if so desired, without the use of latches or other conventional devices.
My invention further relates to a door stop which may be used in conjunctionwith or independently of door checks or other denvices ordinarily employed for automatically closing doors or for regulatingthe open ng and closing of doors and similar devices.
Conventional methods of retaining a door in the open position have included the use of a lug permanently secured to the floor or wall behind the door and to which the door when opened was secured by a hook or eye. This construction permitted the retention of the door only when fully opened or when opened sufficiently to permit the engagement of the hook carried by the doorwith the lug anchored in the floor. Thelug thus employed was a serious obstruction over which persons stumbled and which interfered with the arrangement of the furniture or floor covering. v
Another expedient resorted to was the employment of means carried by the lower end of the door and adapted to engage the floor at any desired point, to permit of the opening of the door to any desired extent. This construction was disadvantageous in that it resulted in damage to the floor or floor coverings.
The widespread use of conventional door checks in their various forms, serving as they do automatically to close a door and to retain it closed, tends to accentuate the need of means for retaining a door fully or partly opening when and if desired, since while it was heretofore possible to retain a door unequipped with a check open by merely failing to close it or by using a small obstacle to prevent it from swinging closed by the pressure of the wind, at present with the use of door checks exerting a positive pull on the door, it is impossible to retain the door open, except by'the use of positive means for that purpose which it is theobject of my invention to supply, it being understood. that such means mustnecessarily not interfere with the use or function of door checks when such devices are used, and to be equally effective on doors unequipped with checking or any other devices.
To overcome these disadvantages, I have devised means for retaining an open door in any desired position against the pull of any door check or door closing devicewhere such are employed, and without in any way da1n aging the floor or floor coverings and without in any way obstructing the floor or wall space, below, around or above thedoor.
Another object of my invention is to provide means which will prevent the initial opening or closing of a door and which will retain in any desired open position.
A further object of my invention is to devise means which may be used with equal cfiicacy an doors provided with door checks and other devices and on doors unequipped with a check, my novel construction being adaptable to doors of all kinds and to all sorts of door attachments now known and used. v
A still further object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable construction, and one which will be inexpensive to produce and easy to install and operate.
To the above ends my invention consists of supports secured to the upper horizontal edge of a door, a bar or track carried by said supports parallel to and spaced from said door, a carriage adapted to slide on said bar, a support secured to the underside of the door head or to the door jamband suitably spaced therefrom and a rod having one end thereof pivoted to said last support and the other end thereof connectedto said carriage. My invention further consists in providing novel means for engaging and disengaging said carriage to and from said bar to retain the door in any desired closed or opened position, and to permit of openin and closing of the door at will. I
My invention further consists of various other novel features of construction; and advantage as hereinafterenumerated and described. V V
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I- have shown in the accompanying drawingsxone form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is .to be under stood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the accompanying; drawings Figure 1 represents a horizontal section on line 1--1 of Figure 2.

Referring to the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts, 1 designates the upper portion of a door which is hinged at 2 to the door janib 3. To the door 1 are secured the brackets 1 and 5 by means of the bolts or screws 6. 7 designates a bar or track having one end thereof perinanently secured to the bracket 4: and the other end thereof removably secured to the bracket 5 in any suitable manner. 8 designates a bracket secured to the underside of the head 9 of the door by the bolts or screws 10 in suitable spaced relation from the door jainb 3, and to which is pivoted one end of the arm 11 by the pivot bolt 12 as will be understood from Figures 1 and 2. The other end of the link 11 is connected through the carriage 13 by the bolt 1 1 passing through the eye or lug 15 said carriage 13 being adapted. to slide back and forth on the stationary arm 7, as the door 1 is opened and closed.
The carriage 13 is of an inverted U shape (see Fig. 5) and has pivoted therein, by means of the bolts 16 the cam 17 which is adapted to engage the underside of the arm 7 in a manner hereinafter described. The cam 17 is further provided on its inner vertical side with the cogs 19, which are adapted to be engaged by the corresponding cogs 20 on the lever head 21 which is pivoted within the carria e 13 by the bolt 22 as will be understood from Figure 4. To the outer side of the carriage 13 is secured the fiat spring 241 by the bolts or screws 25, and the lower end 26 of which is adapted to bear against the bevelled. lug 27 which is secured to or integral with the bottom portion of the head 21. 29 designates a lever or handle member, whereby the head 21 may be shifted to one or the other of the positions seen in Figures 4: and 3 to or disengage the carriage 13 from the bar 7 to permit the opening or closing of the door at will. When the lever 29 is in the vertical position (see Figure 5) the cogs 20 of the head 21 engage the cogs 19 of th cam and tilt the latter upwardly and rearwardly to disengage the serrated ed 'e 18 thereof from the underside of the ban In this position of the cam 17 and head 21, the carriage 13 is free to slide on the bar 2. and the door 1 canbe opened or closed at will, n'ianually or by means of a conventional door check of the spring operated variety. v' Jhen it is desired to keep the door being opened. or when it is desired to retain the door in the opened position, the lever 29 is pulled outwardly to the position seen in Figure 1, whereupon the cogs 20 of the head 21 engage the cogs 10 of the cam 17 and tilt the latter forwardly and downwardly to engage the upper serrated edge 18 thereof with the underside of the bar 7 thereby to prevent 13 from sliding on the bar l. The lower end 26 of the spring 2% bears against the bevelled lug 27, when thehead 21 is tilted forwardly and downwardly into the engaging position seen in ire 1:. Due to the inclined or bevelled edge of the lug 27, the latter is free from engagement with the springs 24 when the'device is in the position shown in Figure 3, the spring 24 being adapted to engage the hip; 27 only when the carriage 13 is fastened to the bar 7 in the manner above set forth.
In Figure 6 1 have shown. my novel door stop applied to a door equipped with a conventional door check. in this construction I mount the cont-'cin/ional door check 30 on a bracket 31, secured to the door jamb 3 or to the door head 9 (in suitable spaced relation from either, depending on the winth of the door) and substitute for the operating arm of the conventional door check 30, the link 11 forming part of my construction. If it is desired to permit the door check 30 to operate in the usual manner, that is, to close the door when it opened, the lever 29 is forced into the position seen in Figure 3 to diseiigage the serrated edge 18 of the cam 17 from the underside of the bar '4' on the door 1, and the conventional door check 30 operates in the usual normal manner, altogether unaffected by the application of my device with the carriage 13 attho endof the link 11 sliding back and forth on the bar 7. lVhen, however, it is desired to prevent the initial opening of the door, or when it is desired to maintain the door fully or partly opened against the tension of the door check 30, it is merely necessary to force the lever 29 into the posit-ion seen in Figure 4: whereupon the cam 1? engages the underside of the carriage 7 lilt) operative relation of the link 11, my invention consisting principally of the idea. of employing the bar 7 carried by the door, the carriage 13 sliding on said bar, and. a connecting link 11 between the carriage door 13 and the door jamb. This order is of course reversed if the carriage 18 is carried by the door jamb instead of the door.
Figure 6 affords a good illustration of the simplicity of adapting my novel door stop for use on doors equipped with one or the other of checking, closing or other attachments, in the instance illustrated it merely being necessary to omit the conventional arm of the door check and to attach the rear end of the link 11 thereto instead of to the bracket8 as in the construction shown in Figure 1.
While I have principally described my invention as applied to a door, and have called my novel construction, for convenience, a door stop, it is to be understood that mynovel construction is universally applicable for use in connection with any movable member when it is desired to determine the position of such movable member with respect to another fixed or stationary member. Thus it is feasible to employ my novel construction to retain in the open or closed condition or to retain in any desired position, a transom, a trunk lid or cover, a man hole cover, a locomotive window, an automobile windshield and various other devices which it is here unnecessary to enumerate.
It will further be seen that my novel de-v vice consists of a minimum number of parts,
is simple in design and easily assembled,
so that a highly eflicient, and durable de vice is produced at a minimum cost.
Having thus described myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-- I
1. In a device of the character stated, a track adapted to be secured to a door, a cartem-.
riage slidably mounted on said track, means for preventing the movement of said carriageon said track including a cam and a lever pivoted to said carriage, serrations on said cam adapted to engage a wall of said track, cogs on the juxtaposed portions of said lever and cam for actuating the latter into frictional engagement with said track, and a link having one end thereof pivoted to said carriage and its other end pivoted to a fixed point in proximity to the door jamb.
2. In a device of the character stated, a track adapted to be secured to a door, a carriage slidably mounted on said track, a cam pivotally mounted in said carriage and having serrations thereon adapted to engage a wall of said track, a lever also pivoted to said carriage, cogs on said cam, cogs on said,
lever in mesh with the cogs on said cam, a spring adapted to bear against said lever and a link having one end thereof pivoted to said carriage and the other end thereof pivoted to a fixed point in proximity to said door. I
3. In a device of the character stated, a track adapted to be secured to a door, a carriage slidably mounted on said track, means for preventing the movement of said carriage on said track including a cam and a lever pivoted. on said carriage, serrations on said cam adapted to engage a wall of said track-cogs on the juxtaposed portions of said leverand cam for actuating the latter into engagement with said track,'a spring bearing on said lever to prevent the accidental disengagement of said cam from said track, and a link having one end thereof pivoted to said carriage and the other end pivoted to a fixed point in proximity to said door.
4. In a deviceof the character stated, a track having one end thereof permanently secured and its other end detachably secured to a door, a carriage slidably mounted on said track and having serrations thereon adapted to'engage a wall of said track, a
