LEAF HOLDER.

rlhis invention relates to improvements in leaf holders.

It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a leaf holder' for use upon books, note-- books, and the like, which will maintain the pages .in position while the bool; is being used.

lt is a further object of this invention to provide a leaf holder which will serve as a book-marit, automatically keeping the proper place as the pages are turned.

It is a further object of this` invention to provide a leaf holder which constructed of :i single length of wire without the use of any plate member or other means commonly employed for strengthening the clip.

It is a further object of this invention to provide alcaf holder which very simple in construction, is inexpensive, and is well adapted for the purpose described.

lWith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved leaf holder and all its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents.

Fig. 4 is an elevation of part of the device on a larger scale with parts in section to disclose the interconnection of the parts.

Referring to the drawing, the nume al 5 designates a book to which is attached the improved leaf holder. The latter comprises a single length of wire bent to form a finger' 6, a loop 7, a thumb projection 8, an arm 9, a coil spring l0, a brace ll, and a clip member l2. The thumb projection 8 is but a very slight bend at the end of the loop 7 to enable the iin ger 6 to be raised up when it is desired to i11- sert a leaf.

The brace 1l is a very important part of the device as it receives all of the strain caused by the tightening of the spring l() when the fin ger 6 is raised. As the brace bears against the cover of the book, the linger can be raised without affecting the clip portion 12. Without this brace the strain would be imparted to the clip and it would be 4raised up and caused to separate from the cover upon every manipulation of the finger 6. ln other types of leaf holders, plates have been used either as the entire clip member or to strengthen a Wire clip to hold it in proper engagement. In this inf vention, the use of thebrace to strengthen the clip eliminates the necessity of having a plate or other separate part, and thus simplifiesthe leaf holder by permitting it tobe constructed entirely of a single length of wire.

A fur ther novel feature of this invention resides in the fact that the coil spring lits outside of the leaves on the edges thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, thus eliminating' the projection caused in many devices when the spring is positioned underneath the leaves.

l'n using the device two leaf holders may be employed as shown in Fig. l, one constructed for the left hand cover and one for the right, or a single holder may be used. The device for the right hand cover acts as an automatic book-mark, for as the leaves are withdrawn and turned, it automatically engages the next leaf. If the book is closed, it will mark the place where the user left off. The holders .for

both covers are designed to hold the pages iny place to prevent their turning of their own accordor because of a breeze. lfVhen a device for the left hand cover is employed, as a page is turned it is merely necessary to engage the projection 8 with the thumb or finger, and raise the finger 6 to insert the leaf, or to slip the leaf under the finger without raising the hitter.

From the foregoing description it may be seen that the improved leaf holder is simple in construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, and is well adapted for the purpose described.

l. A leaf holder comprising a clip portion, a spring in connection with said clip portion, a brace member in connection with said sprinfr and extending within the clip portion, antv an arm joining said spring and extending in an opposite direction from the brace member.

2. A leaf holder comprising a clip portion, a spring in connection with said clip portion, a loop-shaped brace member in connection with said springend extending Within the clip portion, andan arm joining said spring and extending in an opposite direct-ion from the brace member. j i

3. A leaf holder comprising a wire clip portion having two U-shaped sides, a spring in connection with an upper end portion of said clip, a brace in Connection with said spring and extending between the two Sides of the clip, and an arm joining said spring and extending in an opposite direction from the brace member.

4. A leaf holder comprising a wire clip portion having two U-shaped Sides, a small coil spring in connection with an upper end oi Said clip, a loop-shaped brace ineinber in connection with said spring and extending between the two sides o" the clip, an arni joining said Spring and extending in an opposite direction 'frein the brace member, said arin having an upwardly bent end portion, and a linger extending downwardly 'from said arni.
