Aprlv23, 1929, (H. B. GREEN 'To SCALE Filed April 15/1927 Patented Apr. 23, i929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ITOWARD B. GREEN, OF WESTEILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE KILGORE MANU FACTURING- COMPANY, OF 'VETER-VILLE, OI-IIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
TOY SCALE.
Application filed April 15,
The present invention relates to toy weighing scales, and its purpose is to provide an attractive article et this nature with a minimum ot moving parts with no possibility oftdisarrangement. The scale comprises a housing, an integral pointer and pendulum eiement, and an integral trame and pan. rllhe transmitting connection between the beam and pointer is such that movements given to the one will be positively imparted to the other with no possibility el' injuring or disengaging the connection, and this, ot course, is the desirable feature considering that the device is intended primarily as a toy.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a side elevation ot the scale.
Figure 2 is a sect-ion on the line 2-2 et Fig. l.
Figure 3 is a top plan view,
Figure 4 is a perspective of the beam and integral pan, and
Figure 5 is a perspective orp the integral pointer and pendulum.
Referring to the drawings, the scale housing is composed of front and rear castings i0 and ll which by reason ot interlocking lugs such as l2 are adapted to be held 'tegether by a single bolt i3, and by reason et abutting marginal flanges form a hollow body. These castings have respective upright port-ions which have been designated as lO and ll, and horizontally extending pertions le and l5. 'lhe horizontal portions have integral uprights or stanchi ons 1G and li' vespec-tively, and these are recessed at their tops te receive the kniib edge bearings l and i9 formed integrally with and bet-veen )cam 2O and pan 2l.
At its iiree end beam 2O is provided with a counterweight 22 and a pin 23. 'lhe proportion oit the parts such that the center et gravity ot' th beamand pan is brought intermediate the knife edges and the pin so that considering the beam to be mounted on its supports, weig it 22 will tend to move the pai upwardly.
fis clearly shown in Fig. 27 beam 2O extends into the ca ity between walls l0 and ll through a suitable aperture formed by cutting` away portions of the marginal langes mentioned above. From the desorption thus tar, it will be seen that the beam is mounted for pivotal movement about bearings i8 and i s ib 1927. Serial No. 184,040.
19 with its end projecting` between the upright walls ot' the housing.
Mounted on bolt 13 tor oscillatory movements is pointer -3 provided with an aperture 2e through which the bolt extends. The pointer is extended downwardly beyond its pivotal point into an expanded portion and a counter-weight 2G. Portion 25 is provided with a cam slot which extends at an angle et substantially loo relative to the longitudinal line ot the pointer proper. The oscillatory movements et the pointer are limited by the length ot slot 27, so that it is permitted to swing through the vertical a certain extent in each direction. rl`he counter-weight 26 and the weight ot expanded portion atleet the balance ot the pointer so that it is normally yieldingly urged towards its lett hand limit ot i'iscillation7 as shown in Fig. l.
Fin of the beam, when the parts are assembled. engages a cam slot 27 and it will be seen that upon depression of pan 2l pointer 23 will be moved to the ight against the torce o fiounter-weight and In Figure 2 the space between walls l0 and ll is shown as be ing so limited as to prevent disengagement of pin 23 from slot 27. Thus although the knife edges 18 and 19 can be lifted from their seats, the beam and pointer can never be disconnected as long as the casing elements are retained in operative relation.
Casing clement lO is provided with a window and a scale ot any desired character 2? in klied on the inner 'face of wall ll. in the us.. kl relation to the pointer. lllall ll likewise provided with arcuate window so that the nieren/unt et the pointer is i visible vfrom the rear oi'V the housing.
From the above description it will be seen that the device is ot the utmost simplicity. and thus extremely well adapted to its purpose. lllhile particular embodiment et the invention has nec farily been shown, it to be .in erstood that this showing is not to be taken restrictive and that the scope of the invention is indicated in the following claims.
