Application filed July 10, 1926, Seria1.N0. 121,565. Renewed September 20, 1928.
The object of our invention is simplifying the construction of stroppers of wellknown type as hereinafter set forth, having our improvements embodied therein.
. A further object of our'invention is providing an improved gripping device prefer ably integral with the means of a stropper. v
A further object of our invention is the providing of improved Ineansfor connectprimary driving ing the primary driving meansv to the driven l construction, combination and arrangement,
parts of a stropper. g V v v A further object of our invention is an improved power operating means.
A. further objectof our invention is an improved means for maintaining in position the various parts of the stropper.
A-further object of our invention is the providing an improved :means' of assembly of the various parts of a stropper.
A further object of our invention is the providing of an improved means for bold ing the bladesin a stropper. A further object ofour invention is an improved means for indicating the position of the blade forextraction.
I A further object of our invention is the providing of improved means for securing the operative driven parts withinthe casing.
vA furtherobject' of ourinvention is an improved means for forming or securing the various parts of a stropper together.
A further object. of our invention is the providing an improved case and'means of construction. I Y
With the foregoing and other objects in view, our invention consists of the'novel of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in theaccompanying draw- I ing, wherein is shown the'preferred embodiment of our invention, but it is understood that changes, variations and modifications may beresorted to which come within the,
scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings of the herein-described embodiment of our invention, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly insection, of our improved stropper; Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation, partly in'section, of the same: Fig.3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. l is an'end view in elevation, looking" in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the spiral driving cam 14 and handle 15; Fig. 6 is an end view causes them to burr in elevation of looking in thedirect-ion of the arrows; Fig. 1s a planview of the bridge 17, Fig. 8 being a side view in elevationof the same; Fig. 9 is aplan view of the shuttle washer 13, Fig. 1Qbe1ng a side view in elevation of the same; F g. 11 is a plan view of the roller tube 9, Fig. 12 being an end view in elevation of the same; Fig. 13 is'a plan view of the blank from which theroller tube 9 is formed; Fig. is a plan view of the blade-holder 21. Fig. 15 being aside view in elevation of the same; Fig. 16 is a plan view of the blank from which the blade-holder 21 is formed, and Fig. 17 is, an end'view in elevation of the blade-holder.
"Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the severallviews.
1 is the casing body, preferably stamped out of sheet metal from the flat and formed in such shapes as shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 3, the edges'being joined together as shown at 2 in said'figures bystaggered intermeshing projections. 3 is the head of the operating end ofthe casing. 4 is the head of the blade insertion end of the casing. Heads 3 and 4: are secured to body 1 by looking projections 5 on body 1 looking over depressed portions 6 in said heads. prepared surface ofthe strop, which may be of leather or any other material suitable for such a purpose. This surface of the stropis mounted to form a roll, preferably on a wooden body 8, by means of glue or otherwise. I /Vehave found that occasionally tacking or other securing means is desirable. The wooden body 8 is mounted on roller tube 9 and secured thereon by any 'welhknown means. We have found that a neat lit and the securing tacks 10 a little long which against the side of the roller tube 9 is sufiicient to secure the same.
In roller tubes 9 are slots11 through which 'the projections 12 of the shuttle washer 13 pro ect; these slots in the apparatus shown in the drawing are two in number, one not extending'to the end of the tube 9 and the one opposite extending to the end of the tube 9. This feature permits of the introduction of shuttle washer 13 on to roller tube 9 with its projections 12in said slots 11 without bending 0r springing either of said parts. 14; is the spiral driving cam, in the drawings shown as two in number, formed integral with handle 15 preferably from flat stock. i
the part shown in Fig. .5,
7 is the These cams operate within roller tube 9 and drive shuttle washer 13 by means of carry said the projections 12 on said washer ope-rating against the surface of the spiral andthereby driving said shuttle washer 13 which rotatively operates roller tubes. 16 is a piston or Washer carried by spiral driving cam lt operating within roller tube 9to steady and driving cam and act a stop to limit its withdrawal from said tube when contacting With'shuttle washer 13. i 17 is the bridge which is formed with retaining members 18 stamped and bent so as to carry shuttle washer 13 permitting rotation thereof, but securing the position longitudinally thereof relatively with reference to said bridge. In bridge 17 is also operating opening 19 through which blade reverse cam spiral 20, operates;
21 is the blade holder. We have found that the blade holder can be cheaply and very successfully stamped when formed from sheet metal; and in doing this we provide a handle 22 formed to lay parallel with the razor blade when in position to indicate its position within the stropping machine when I a withdrawal of the same is desired. 23 and operating 24 are projectionsto register with the holes in the razor blade for positioning purposes. Portions 25 and 26 are cylindrical formed surfaces, or guides,.for operating within double slotted tube 27. 28 is a projecti'on acting as a stop in the withdrawal of the blade holder to limit itsmovement outward, the same bringing up against thehead on the inside. In cylindrical portion 26 undercut 29 is made to facilitate the holding 1 of the blade in withdrawal. Projection 30 is formed with a similar undercut.
Double slotted tube 27 permits the razor blade 31 carried by blade-holder 21 to project on both'sides thereof'through said slots,
. said slots being open to the end ofsaid tube cured at one end which end revolves in head 4 as a-bearing, and whichhead is provided with opening 32 to permit the withdrawal of the blade, the other end of said tube being se-. to blade reverse cam spiral 20 and is operated thereby. Said reverse cam spiral '20 is journalled in a depression in end 3 of the casing and is provided, with an exterior washer secured to said spiral to prevent relatively 'endwise displacement, but permitting rotation. .Bridge 17 operates said spiral 20 two surfaces are shown, but three or more may be used, if deslred. We have used three very successfully, and do not wish to be limited to any number. 7 7V V v In this specification and claims, when we use the term f twisted members, we' mean thereby spiral members. 7 I
Having thus described our invention, what we ,claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A razor stropper comprlsing a stropping roll, a tube forming a mounting shaft therefor, a spiral cam rod reciprocable to rotate sald roll, a shuttle washer having a perforation to surround-the spiral cam rod and having inward projectionsito engage the grooves of the cam, the roller mounting tube also passing through said perforation and'slotted to permit said projections of said shuttle washer to pass therethrough and so that-the tube may slide axially through said shuttle washer, but may also be rotated thereby, one' of said slots extending to the end of said tube to permit ready assembly by threading of the spiral cam rod and tube through said shuttle washer; 1
2. A. razor stropper comprising, stropping rolls, mounted upon tubes, within which telescope spiral cam reds shuttle washers having apertures with inward projections engaging the grooves of the spiralcam rods and'also passing through slots'initheprojecting ends of the roller mounting tubes, a bridge-plate having apertures re'giste ring with those of the shuttle washers and overhanging flanges which position and retain saidshuttle-washers in contact with one side of bridge-plate.
