ELECTRIC SWITCH Filed 00117, 1925 Inventor: Kun o Baue rsohm id't,

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KUNO BAUERSCHMIDT, OF KARLSHORST, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION NEW YORK.
ELECTRIC SWITCH.
Application filed October 17, 1925 Serial No.
My invention relates to electric switches of the type in which a resistance is momentarily connected in the circuit at each opening and closing of the switch.
An Object of mv invention is the provision of an improved switch of this character in which terminals of the resistance are normally completely separated from the main switch contacts.
My invention will be better understood from the following description taken in con-' nection with the accompanying drawing, and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, Figs. 1 and 2 show respectively a side elevation and a top view of a switch illustrating my invention.
In the drawing 1 have shown at 1 a cover which is adapted to close the top of a vessel containing an insulating fluid, such for example as oil. in which the contacts are immersed. Insulator bushings 2 are mounted in the cover and at their lower ends carry the fixed main contacts 3 with which cooperate the movable main contacts 4 carried by the bridging number 5. Separate insulators 7 are secured to the cover 1 and each supports a fixed auxiliary contact 8 adjacent which is a second fixed auxiliary contact 9 which is connected with the fixed main contact 3 and supported by the insulator bushing 2. The fixed resistance 10 has its ends connected rcspcctively with the two fixed auxiliary contacts 8. Supported bv the insulating tubes 11 to which also the bridging member 5 is secured are the members 12 which carry the movable auxiliarv contacts 18. The arrangement is such that when the main switch is fully closed the auxiliarv contacts 13 are disengaged .from the auxiliary contacts 8 and 9 but during the opening and closing movement of the main switch the contacts 13 engage contacts 8 and 9. Thus when the main contacts separate, the resistance is included in the circuit controlled by the switch, the circuit icing finally completely opened. Conversely in closing, the resistance is mo mentarily cut into the circuit before the main contacts engage. By the construction disclosed the resistance is completely separated from the circuit in both the closed and open positions of the switch and by supporting the contact terminals of the resistance from the cover by separate insulators the resistance is 62,956, and in Germany Novcmber 8, 1924.
normally more thoroughly insulated from the circuit controlled than it it were sup ported by the insulator bushings 2.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An electric switch of the enclosed fluid break type comprising a cover, insulator bushings supported thereby, a fixed main contact supported by each of said bushings, a movable bridging member having main contacts adaptedto engage said fixed main contacts, a pair of separate fixed auxiliary contacts, adjacent eachof said main fixed contacts, means connecting one auxiliary contact of each of said pairs with the adjacent: main contact, insulating means for independently supporting the other auxiliary contact of each pair from said cover, a resistance connecting said other auxiliary contacts, and auxiliary contacts fixed to said bridging member arranged to engage the auxiliary contacts comprising each pair during the opening and closing movements of the main contacts and to be disengaged from both of said auxiliary contacts when the switch is in fully closed and in fully open position.
2. An. electric switch of the enclosed fluid break type comprising a cover, insulator bushings supported thereby, a fixed main contact supported by each of said bushings, a movable bridging member having main contacts adapted to engage said fixed main contacts, a pair of separate fixed auxiliary contacts adjacent each of said main fixed contacts, means connecting one auxiliary contact of each of said pairs with the adjacent main contact, insulators secured to the cover and spaced from the insulator bushings for supporting the other auxiliary contact of each pair, a resistance enclosed with the switch contacts and having its terminals connected respectively with said other auxiliary contacts, and movable auxiliary contacts fixed to said bridging member and insulated from the main contacts carried thereby for engaging the fixed auxiliary contacts during the opening andclosing movements of the main contacts, the movable auxiliary contacts being out of engagement with both of said fixed auxiliary contacts when the switch is in open and in fully closed position.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set 111 hand this 19th day of September, 1925.
KUNO BAUERSCI'IMIDT.
