Description

J. R. SHIELDS.
HINGE.
Patented Nov. 30, 1875.
INVE TOR w, Jim,
ATTORNEYQ N PETERS. FNDT UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOHN R. SHIELDS, OF NORFOLK, VJBGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,595, dated November 30, 1875; application filed v September 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SHIELDS, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view, part horizontally sectional, of my hinge; and Fig. 2 is a top vie-w thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
My invention relates to hinges; and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and is intended as an improvement upon the devices described in the expired patent of John E. Shields, No. 28,510, dated May 29, 1860.
In attempting to manufacture the hinge patented to said John E. Shields a difficulty was encountered which proved insurmountable to the operators in charge-a core to cast the small recess in which the lug on the pin is held, and the perforated ear could not be with drawn without injury to the hinge. To remedy this evil I construct my hinge in the manner following-th at is to say:
A of the drawings represents a leaf of my hinge, having two ears, to a, the latter of which is closed at its outer end. Instead of forming a narrow recess in this leaf for the reception of the lug on the pin, as was done in said patent, I cut away the plate at the point 0, in the manner shown, so as to form an oblong recess, extending to the end of the leaf. B of the drawings represents the second leaf of my hinge. It is constructed with a central perforated ear, 9, and has, in addition to the usual devices, a small rectangular lug, 02, adapted to fit into the extreme upper end of the recess 0 of the opposite leaf, above the lug on the pin, when the two leaves are closed together. The leaves A and B are united by means of the pin 0, which said pin has a lug on its side and near its head, marked 1 adapted to fit in the recess 0, and when in position to be held securely by the lug a whenever the two leaves are folded. I
My hinge may be easily manufactured by casting, and is found to be of great value, especially in cases where parties desire to use it for either a right or left hand door.
It may be changed from one such door to the other by removing the pin and taking off the door, without the necessity of unscrewing the hinge, as is usual.
I am aware that a hinge provided with a 'pintle having a double-beveled lug near its upper end, which fits into a corresponding recess in the leaf of the hinge, the closing of the leaves tending to crowd down the pintle and keep it in position, as shown in Letters Patent granted to A. H. Isham, dated September 7, 1875, has heretofore been employed, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a butt-hinge,.the combination of the recess 0, extending to the top of the leaf A, the lug a on leaf B, and the lug g on the connecting-pin, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN RIDLEY SHIELDS. Witnesses:
HENRY L. TURNEY, HENRY WALKER.
