My invention relates ,tok rail 'supporting devices, and has relation especially to tie. plates, rail chairs or ties for `use with or without ties of other constructions.
The object of my invention is to provide rail supporting means of the above character which may be used with rails of varying dimensions, particularly withrail -bases of varying widths and thicknesses, the construction being such as to tightlyhold thev rail in place to prevent creeping, spreading, turning or canting. Theobject is, further'- more, to provide a construction of thiskind lwhich may beused wither `without other rail supporting devices, such, foryexample, as ties made of any kind of material, such as wood, concrete, etc. Further objects of my Yinvention willappear from thedetailed descriptionthereof contained hereinafter. e

In thevform of my inventionflshown in Figs. 1 toj I have 'shown a rail 1 which is supported upon atie plate 2.l The, tie plate 2 has, as shown in Fig. 1, a V-shapedvrecess 3 having at the sides thereof two inclined` uwedging' rsurfaces o 4lv and v5.y The wedging surfaces are adapted to support Awedging blocks and 7, whichhave lon their inner faces a series of steps 8 and 9 respectively to cooperate with a pyramid-shaped block l10 having similarly stepped faces 11 and 12,- the base of which block 10 is arranged to rest against the side ofthe rail 1. In assembling the parts the plates 6, 7` 'andv 10 are `adjusted into such a stepped relation to each other as to fitagainst the sidefof the rail base on one side and against the yinclined Vsurfaces 4'and 5 on the other end/Thev clamping plate 17 is, preferably applied over the tie plate 2 and the tapered plate14 v is inserted while theclamping member 17 is pushed over to the left of Fig. 2,7adjacent to the'rail l. In this instance there is also provided a dove-tailed recess 31 at the top of the tie plate 2 to re` ceivev a tapered wedging plate 32 constructed exactly as in the case of the plate 14 in the other form of my invention. The device comprised in the form ot `my invention as shown in Figs. 4t and 5 is assembled. in substantially the same way as in assembling the form of my invention lpreviously described. However, in this instance the stepped block 26, as previously referred to, is supported at one side from the rail base and at the opposite side by the stepped surface ot the block 24 resting against the inclined surface 2B while one end of the block 26 rests against the projection 29.
As above pointed out, it will. be understood that while the devices shown in Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings are portions ot complete ties across the entire track so that each tie supports the two rails in the manner above described, it is to be understood that, instead, each rail may be supplied with separate tie plates or rail chairs, the two ends of the tie plates or rail chairs being constructed on both sides of the particular rail which it holds in place in the manner as shown and described in each one or both of the modikiied'torms of my invention hereinabove detop of Fig. 6 I have shown a complete wood tie 2 withthe two rails heldin place thereon as in the preceding figures, itbeing understood that the same may orgmay'not be supported on a wooden tie 32.l Also, in the middle of Fig. 6 I have shown a concrete `base 33 supporting two tie plates 34 and 35 constructed and equipped as in the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 5, and held in place by bolts 36. At the lower part olf Fig. 6 I have shown another way of supporting the rail holding means, the same comprising a steel channel member 37 with two lateral upstanding -flanges, said .channel member having welded therein two tie holding plates et() and l1 constructed exactly like the tie holding means shown in Figs. 1 to 5.
Also, it will be understood tiat in the case where it is desired to secure in place rails of the same width, the stepped blocks 6, '7, 10, 241- and 26 may be omitted, as well as the recesses in which said blocks are placed,
so that the tie plate 2 will then lit exactly against the edge of the rail base or" uniform width. Also, it will be understood that, if desired, the bolts 19 may be omitted. Any variations in the thicknesses of the rail bases are taken care of, as Vwill be readily seen, by reason of the fact that the plates 14 and 32 are tapered so that the vari ations in the thickness of the rail base will be taken care oi'by appropriate lateral. adjustment oiI the clamping members 17 vand Bllfwhen being moved into final position.

A- rail supporting means comprising a rail supporting plate having a recess in which the rail base is adapted to be Acarried, and a holding means for the rail base comprising a clamping member and laterally adjustable blocks having stepped interacting faces for supporting the rail laterally `in the supporting plate, one of said blocks being adapted tol be supported from an inclined face in the railsupporting plate and the inside of the clamping member, and the other block being adapted to be supported from the side of the rail base.

A rail supporting means comprising a rail supporting plate having a recess in which the rail base is adapted to be earried, and a holding means for the rail base Comprising a ll-shaped clamping member adapted to embrace the rail supporting plate and laterally adjustable blocks having stepped interacting faces for supporting the rail laterally in the supporting plate, one of said blocks being adapted to be supported from an inclined face in the rail supporting plate and the inside of the Clamping member and the other block being adapted to be supported from the side of the rail base and the ends of the clamping member being adapted to be held together with bolts.
