UNITE ARTHUR M. FIELD, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSEGNOR TO GUEST NECKWEAR COMPANY, INC., 07.? ROCHESTER. NEXV YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
NECKTIE DEVICE.
Application filed June 19,
This invention relates to a device for use in connection with neckties, and has for its principal object the provision of a device which will aid customers in selecting; neck- Wear appropriate for suit: of various predetermined colors.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device by means of which customers and store clerks can tell immediately whether a certain necktie is suitable tor wear with a suit of a certain color.
Still a further object of the invention is the provision of a. device which, when applied to a necktie, will create a simulation of the appearance of the necktie when wo n with a suit.
To these and other ends the invention rcsides in certain lHlPI'UVQIIIeIlis and coral; tions of parts, all as will be hereina ti er more, fully described, the novel features being; pointed out in the claims at the sad (it the specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of a. necktie having; one embodiment of the device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of portion of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through a ncckt in and a device applied thereto;
Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the device hefiore it is applied to a necktie;
Fig. 5 is a view of a device intended to represents a suit of a difi'erent color from tha represented in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 6 is a. similar view of another device intended to represent a suit of still a third color.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
As is well known by those QXPPIltIlt'tll iu the selling of neckwear. rust oiners Frcrpnwntly desire to purchase ncckties which will liar mouize properly with suits of a particular color. Often the suit in quest ion is not being worn at the moment by the cu tomer and it is therefore impossible to pla e the necktie next to the suit to ascertain whether the resulting color scheme is harmonious. Under such circun'lstan es. considerable diiticult: is ot'ten experienced in selecting}; an appropriate necktie to go with a suit which is not at hand, even though the customer s able. to describe telly the color of the suit.
The present invention is intended primarily to eliminate these difficulties of sclee 1928. Serial 286,700.
tion. According, to the present invention, it is proposed to furnish devices representing suits of various predetermined colors, which devices have means for showing the necktie as though it were being worn with a suit of he desired color. Thus it is possible for the clerk and the customer to ascertain at once whether any particular necktie would barmonize with, say, a brown suit. or a blue suit, or any other color for which these devices may be furnished.
A necktie having one of these devices ap plied to it is shown in Fig. l, and the con- :-:truction of the device may be ascertained readily from Figs. 2, 3 and 4r. The device consists essentially of a piece of sheet material 10, for evampte paper, which is bent as shown in Fig. 3 so that a portion of the sheet material overlies the front of the necktie 11 while other portions extend around the back of the tie and may be secured to each other by arv suitable means. such by adhesive.
It the material of which the member 10 is constructed is sufliciently still, however. it may be possible to dispense with the adhesive connection, the parts being retained in the position to which they have been bent simply by the stiffness of the material itself.
A window 12 is formed in this device near the. center oi the. t ront portion thereof, a shown in the drawings. This window 12 may he produced either by treating: the sheet material to make a portion of it transparent. such as by oilinc it; or it may be formed by cutting away a portion of the sheet materia this cut-out portion being left open or being covered by a. sheet of transparent material as may he desired. It will be noted that the window is shaped to represent the shape of the exposed portion of a necktie as ordinarily worn by a man. part of the tie being covered by the collar and part by the vest and coat of the mans su t.
Lines are preferably t'orm-ed on the sheet mater al 10 to represent a. collar 1.). and other lines represent portions ot a mans suit. such as the rest 1 and coa 15. The coat and rest are colored to simulate a suit of a predetermined color. while the collar l t and the portion of the shirt which appears immediately below the collar are preferably lctt white to represent a w ile collar and shirt, although they could e colored in any manner desired.
It will be seen. especially from Fin; 2, that when this device is applied to a necktie,
lit)
registration wtih the. window l This is wpecvait; advantageous where the arc has wide st apes. some of which might h wide a to tilt the entire window opcnin such (Pur e, the device may he slid ham. torth along the tie. hrii nc; d ti'erent stripes or combinations ot strzpcs successively into registry with the wi'nuow, so that the customer may see how each individual color or group of colors in the tie will in rmonize with a suit of the color represented by the device.
It is contemplated, ot course, that these. devices will be constructed, in various colors to represent suits of as many ditlerent colors or combinations of colors as may be d sired. Figs. and G of the drawings represent devices simultating suits i ditierent colors 'lrem that shown in Figs. 1. and if. The stippling in Figs. 1 and 2 and the lining in Figs. 5 and 6 are not intended to repre ent any particular colors, but are intended simply to illustrate the tact that the devices are made up in various colors to represent various suits.
It desired, the devices may bear any appropriate wording. For instance, the may tarry words such Smart when worn with a dark brown suit, in the case of devices made up to represent dark brown suits. Similarly, devices represcntingblue or gray suits might hear the words, Smart when worn with a blue suit, or Smart when worn with a gray suit.
These devices may he applied to ncekt'ies by the manufacturer ot' the neckwcar, before the ties are shipped to the stores, or they may be furnished direct to the retailer. In the latter also, the retailer may apply a device to each tie before placing it on the counter for sale, or the clerk may be provided with a supply of devices which he may apply to the ties when they are being examined by customers.
It will now he seen that there has been disclosed a novel device of great usefulness and helpfulness in the selection of appropriate neckwear. hen a device of this kind is used. the customer may see at once, without the necessity of trying the neckt ie on. exactly how the tie will look when worn with a suit of a. predetermined color. This will save the customers time and insure a more satisfac tory selection. and will also the time of the clerk so that one clerk may wait edieiently upon more customers than would be po sible without the use of this device. As an aid to rapid selection of neckties appropriate for certain suits, the ties may be grouped according to the colors of the suits with which they are intended to go. For instance, when a custoincr asks for a t e to go with a dark blue suit, the clerk may pick up a group of ties to which dark olue devices have previously been applied, and thus the customer may make a selection rapidly, without having to look x er and wee-l out a num er of ties which wou d not he at all appropriate for a suit of the color under eons erai-on.
While one end; dinunt ot' the in-v en ion has been disclosed, it as to he undcrstrasl that the inventive idea may e carried out in a number ot' ways, This app ication is theretor-e not to be limited to the precise details shown, but
intended to cover all variations and moditications thereof falling within the spirit of the invention, or tln scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
