March 5, 1929-, b. THOMPSON BATHTUB Filed Feb. 23, 1928 I N VEN TOR.
Orrin Th ATTO NE Patented Mar. 5, 1929. I
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN THOMPSON, OF NEENAH, WISCONSIN" BATHTU'B.
Application filed February 23, 1928. Serial No. 256,356.
'ner as hereinafter set forth a tub of such class, having means in convenient reach of the bather to be gripped by the hands for supporting the occupant from sl pping during the period of entering or leaving the tub, and furthermore is adapted to aid the occupant in raising or lowering the body to a sitting position.
Another object of the invention 1s to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a bathtub having one or more of its walls provided with integral means arranged relative to the wall to constitute a hand rail so disposed to prevent crushing of the hand when the rail is gripped by the occupant.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as set forth, a tub with means aforesaid in its wall, which is eflicient in its intended use, without detracting from the appearance of the tub, strong, durable and compact, simple in its construction and arrangement and comparatively 1nexpensive to prepare.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and lllustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views .Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation and partly in section, of a bath tub in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof. 4
Figure3 is a section on line 33 of Figure In the accompanying drawings the tub 1s designated generally at 1 and has the usual side and end walls and a bottom. One or more walls preferabl one side wall has the upper inner corner t ereof cut away for an appropriate length to provide a recess or cavity 2 extending lengthwise of the tub. The cavity 2 includes a pair of end walls 3, 4 and an u standing bottom or inner wall designat generally at 5, of'concavo-convexcontour, with the convex portions indicated at 6, 7 and the concave portion at 8. The cavity I opens at the inner part of the top edge 9 of the side wall of the tub and at the upper portion of the inner face 10 of that side wall in 1n which the cavity is formed. ,The concave part 8 of the bottom or inner wall 5 is dis posed centrally of the latter, and intermedi wall 5 is a cylindrical rail 11 made integral 4 withthe said side wall of the tub. The rail 11- is arranged in spaced relation to the bottgm or inner wall of the recess 2, opposes concave portion 8, is positioned below the top edge 9 and is flush with the inner face 10 of the side wall of the tub. The rail 11 being opposed to concave portion 8 is there fore spaced with respect to the convex portions 6 and 7. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the bathtub referred to herein is of that type 01' character designated by the plumbing trade generally as porcelain, vitreous enamel and the like. As is common in the trade a shell or form of the article is made out of metal and can be cast or stamped. The shell or form is covered with a composition and processed in various ways to give the finished article a hard surface resembling stone or lass. In the construction of the shell accor ing to my invention, the cavity 2 may be cast or stamped 1n the shell. The end walls 3, 4, of said cavity may be cast or stamped with an opening to accommodate the rail 11 to be inserted thereafter, or the rail may be cast or stamped integral therewith. el'ing composition is applied to the preformed shell and processed, so as to make the rail integral with the finished tub.
WhatI claim is A bathtub having one of its walls provided lengthwise of its top edge with a cavity having a pair of end walls and an inner wall formed with a coneave portion, said In either event the covcavity opening at the top edge and inner face I hereto.
