WATER-TUBE CONNECTION.
Application filed m 15, 1926. Serial 1%. 122,627.
This invention relates to rock drills, but more particularly to a water tube connection for that type of rock drills in which water 18 supplied to a hollow drill steel for cleansing the drill hole.
The objects of this invention are to seal the water in the back head so as to prevent water from being forced into the cylinder, to protect the water tube against injury by the securing means and to prevent improper assembly of the parts comprising the connection.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combination of elements and arrangement of parts sub stantially as hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a rock drill partly in section, illustrating an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail sectional.
elevation of the back head and the water tube parts, and
Figure 3 is a detail sectional elevation part ly in perspective showing the novel features of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rock drill cylinder in which is arranged a reciprocatory piston B, only the front end of which is shown. A back head C forms a closure for the rearward end of the cylinder A. A front cylinder extension D forms a closure for the front end of the cylinder and supports at its front end a front head E. lVithin the front cylinder extension D of the front head E is a chuck F, the front end of which is provided with internal screw threads G to receive a correspondingly threaded chuck aw H. In this instance the chuck jaw H is provided with diametrically opposed longitudinal slots J, the sides of which cooperate with the wings K of a drill steel L extending into the front head for preventing relative motion between the drill steel L and the chuck jaw H.
interposed slidably in the chuck F and between the piston and the drill steel L is an anvil block 0 for transn'iitting the blows of the piston to the drill steel. Seated on the cylinder A is the valve chest P in which is dis posed a suitable distributing valve (not shown) for controlling the admission of ores sure fluid to the cylinder to actuate the piston B, Such pressure fluid may be conveyed fron'r a suitable source of supply by a connec- 4. 4- t non Q secured L0 the valve chest and the admission of pressure fluid to the valve chest may be controlled by a suitable throttle valve (not shown) the controlling lever of which' is designated by R.
In certain types of rock drills such as that illustrated in the drawing,'provision is usually made for conveying cleansing liquid from the back head through the cylinder and the reciprocatory parts into the hollow drill steel L for cleansing the drill-hole. Accordingly, in the'present instance, a longitudinal recess S is formed in tl e back head C and a smaller bore T is formed in the back head co axially with the recess S to receive a water tube U having a reduced forward end V which extends into the hollow bore of the drill steel L. A flat end wall W of the recess S forms a seat for a bulb X formed near the rearward end of the water tube U and also for a packing member Y, preferably of rubher, which encircles the end of the tube U and closely fits the walls of the recess S.
Disposed slidably in the recess S is a bushing Z having a central bore Z) to receive the end of the water tube U. The bushing Z is seated on the packing member Y and has an annular groove 0 which communicates with the bore Z) through the radial passage cl for conveying water to the tube, such water in the present instance being supplied to the recess S by a connection 0 leading from a source of supply and through a passage f in the back head communicating with the annular groove 0.
' Seated on the rearward endof the bushing Z is a packing member 9 for preventing leak age of water through the outer end of the re cess S. This packing member 9 is preferably of the same size and form as the packing member Y and is provided with a cent a l aperture h through which extends a pin which is an integral partof the bushing Z. A washer 0 is adapted to fit slidably in the recess S and is seated on the rearward end of the packing member g, thus preventing rotation of said packing member with a water the back head C to enable a lock nut t to be screwed thereon for locking the Water plug securely in position.
By means of the foregoing described construction, leakage of Water from the recess S into the cylinder A and from the rearward end of said recess is entirely eliminated. The parts comprising the connection are few in number, they are of simple and inexpensive construction, and the pin makes it possible to remove the entire assembly as a unit.
I claim:
1. In a rock drill, the combination of a cylinder, a back head for the cylinder having a recess, a Water tubeextending through the cylinder and into the recess, packing members 1n the recess to prevent leaking of Water theretrom, means shdable 1n the recess to receive the end of the Water tube, means to attachsaid slidable means to one oi the pack mg members to permit removal oi said Water tube-receiving means with the attached packing; member as a unit Without removal of said recess, a packing member in said recess to prevent leakage of Water into the cylinder, a bushing slidable in the recess to receive the end of the Water tube, said bushing having holes to convey Water to the Water tube, a packing member seated on the plug to prevent leakage of Water from. the recess, and a water plug screwed into the recess for compressing the packing members and a pin extending from the rear face of the bushing permitting the removal of said bushing, packing member, andwvater plug as aunit.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
RUSSELL H. WILHELM.
