NI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE LAWRENCE CURRY-COMB COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m CURRV-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,265, dated November 23, 1875; application filed September 27,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs E. L. HoLMEs, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
(lurrycombs have been made with a shank extending from the handle to the back of the comb, and with a brace reaching from that shank to the front part of the comb. In combs of this construction the brace and shank are grasped when the hand is at the back of the comb.
My present invention is for dispensing with the shank between the handle and the back part of the comb, so that the comb is more easily grasped at the back thereof by hands of diti'erent sizes. I
I make use of a metallic connection betwee the handle and the front part of the comb, the said connection being returned over the back of the comb to the handle, so as to be grasped in the hand when the hand is at the back of the com b, instead of grasping the handle.
This metallic connection between the handle and the front part of the comb will generally yield slightly and act as a spring to lessen the concussion of the comb against the animal, and to make the combing operation easier to the person using the same.
In the drawing, Figure l is a sectional view of the comb at the line a; a; of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the back of the comb.
The plates on, knockers b, and handle 0 are of any usual or desired character, and the me tallic connection d, between the front part of the comb and the handle 0, is curved upwardly and rearward to the handle, and there is sufficient space between the metallic connection 01 and the back of the comb for the fingers of the hand in grasping the comb.
It is preferable that the connection d springs or yields slightly in use, to lessen the concussion of the comb against the animal and to relieve the hand of the person using the same.
The metallic connection from the comb to the handle is shown as a plate. It .may, however, be made of wires of suitable size.
I do not claim a handle at the back of the comb, attached either permanently or removably, at one or both ends.
I claim as my invention- The metallic connection extending from the handle to the curry-comb, attached to the comb at the forward part, bent upward and backward over the comb, and leaving space for the user to grasp such metallic portion immediately at the back of the comb, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 23d day of September, A. D. 1875.
CHAS. E. L. HOLMES.
