This invention relates to fasteners and more particularly to a fastener especially adapted for connecting adjacent edges of sheet fabric covers which are so disposed that they are exposed to the weather.

An important object of the invention is to provide a fastener which, while intended for use in this connection, is capable of general application and which will afford a readily connectible water-proof joint.

A further object of the invention is to produce a fastener of this character which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, which will be durable and efiicient in service and a general improvement in the art.

These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein:-

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a spring clip which is elongated and comprises connected angularly disposed arms 11 and 12, of which the arm 12 is the shorter and has its end overlying the arm 11 and provided with a flange 13 directed theretoward which, by reason of the resiliency of the material, is urged into contact with the arm 11. To this clip at both its inner and outer faces a covering of fabric 14 is provided, this covering being preferably so applied that adjacent the connection of the arms 11 and 12, the edges of the fabric meet and are conveniently disposed for attachment to a sheet 15. In combination with a structure of this character, I provide a fabric sheet 16 which may or may not be integral with or connected to the fabric sheet 15. Upon this sheet at a point spaced from the edge thereof is superimposed a strip 17 right triangular in cross section with the vertex thereof disposed toward the margin of the sheet. The margin of the sheet is folded about the strip and secured thereto and to the sheet inwardly of the strip, as more clearly shown in Figure 2. This wedge formation may be readily forced between the arm 11 and the free end of the flange 13 and when the shoulder 18 is arranged inwardly of the flange 13, may only be disengaged by springing the flange 13 outwardly from the arm 11 against. the tension of the material of the clip. The fabriccovering the clip and the fabric of the sheet 16 are brought into forcible engagement at the re-entrant angle between the flange 13 and the arm 12 and at the tip of the flange, so that a substantially water-tight joint is produced.

In the manufacture of a clip of this character, it is extremely desirable that the fabric be applicable to both the clip 10 and strip 17 by the use of adhesives, such as waterproof cement. ticular difficulty, as it may be formed from leather or a similar substance with which the adhesive will readily join. Spring metals and particularly non-corrosive spring metals from which a clip of this character should be produced offer considerable resistance to such form of an attachment. To this end, the arms of the clip are formed with openings 19 through which the portions of the fabric 14 at opposite faces of the arms may come in contact with one another to beadhesively secured.

As a convenient method of producing this clip, I employ as a base therefor a single strip of brass spring wire which is bent, as illustrated in Figure 8, to produce spaced rows of short sections 20 of which rows the ends of each section closely approach the ends of adjacent sections and the ends of each section of each row are connected as at 21 with the adjacent ends of a pair of adjacent sections of the other row. The flat strip thus produced is bent upon lines substantially indicated by dotted lines A and B to produce a clip of the form above described. By employing this structure, a substantially continuous edge for the free ends of the arms 11 and flange 13 is provided, and at the same time, an open work frame for the reception of the fabric 14: is produced, permitting the sections of this fabric at opposite faces of the arms to be substantially continuously secured to one another. 7

I claim 1. A fastener for the adjacent edges of fabric sheets comprising a spring clip having angularly disposed connected arms, one of the arms being shorter having at its free end a flange directed to- Ward the other of the arms, said clip being secured to one of the sheets, the other of the sheets having attached thereto along its edge a Wedge structure having the buttthereof inwardly disposed, said clip and Wedge being fabric-covered, the arms of the clip having openings through which the portions of the fabric covering at opposite faces thereof may be connected to one another.

A base for use in the construction of clips of the character described comprising than the other and spaced rows of short sections, the ends of each section closely approaching the ends of adjacent sections of the same row and the ends of each section being connected With the adjacent ends of adjacent sections of the other row.
