Description

ELIZABETH S. HUNT.
FRUIT-JAR.
Patentefi No v.23,1875.-
M A 0 A. E 7
N. PETERS. FNOTO-LJTHUGRAPHER UNITED STATES PATENT OFFrcn' ELIZABETH S. HUNT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,172, dated November 23,1875 application filed September 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH S. HUNT, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Package for the Preservation of Fruits, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in fruit-cans or other packages, wherein it is desired to preserve any matter within or beneath a liquid; and it consists essentially in a detachable diskplate or bearing-surface, connected with the lid or cover, as will hereinafter more fully appear, which, by its impingement down upon the matter to be preserved,
will insure its perfect immersion in the preserving-liquid.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a common fruit-jar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one form of my immersing-plate, and Fig. 3 shows detached views of my immersing-plate in a few of many modifications of which it is capable Without departing from my invention.
A is a jar or reservoir, which may be made of metal, glass, or any suitable material, and of any desirable style or fashion. B is its cover or lid, to which is attached, in any suitable manner, either rigidly or in a way to be more or less readily detachable, the immersing plate or piece 0, which is made to hang below the plane of the lid or cover B a suffiment upon the contents of the package, shall effectually keep said contents submerged in its preserving liquor or fluid.
If desired, the immersingplate 0 may be provided with perforations D, to effect a more free and ready passage or drainage of the pre serving-liquor through and around it.
The immersing plate or piece G is preferably attached to the under side of the lid or cover B by an arm or hanger, C, so that the lid B, plate 0, and its hanger O can be placed and removed as a single piece. What I claim is- In a reservoir for the preservation of fruit or other matter, the combination of the lid or cover thereof and the detachable immersing plate or piece O, connected thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ELIZABETH S. HUNT.
