In the accompanying drawings illustrat. ing the preferred embodiment of the invention in application, as an example, to a cylindrical container of single ply stock having the closure constituting the ypresent inven; tion applied at the respective ends thereof.

The container has a cylindricalside wall 1 ,y of single ply stock of suitable thickness and surface finish with top and bottom openings., The respective openings are each sealed by means of a closure comprising a cap 2 and a bead 3. The cap 2 has a side wall 4 which, when the capis in position in the end opening of the container, is adjacent the side wall 1, and the bead 3 is formed of folded portions ofthe wall 4 and side wall 1. The core 5 of the bead is formed of the convoluted hem 6 with which the side wall 1 of the container is provided and consists of the terminal portion of the hem 6 and a portion 7 of the doubled-back edge thereof forming a second hem. The end 8 of the side wall of the cap overlaps the core 5 and is thus secured in the bead between the portion 7 of the doubledback edge of the hem and the outer'convolutf ed or folded portions of the side wall 1.
The parts forming the closure for the container, and more especially the bead 3, they wall v4 of the cap, and the end portion of the side wall 1, are subjected, in forming, to a high pressure, preferably from 4000 to 6000 pounds per square inch, under which pressure the parts become virtually solidified and are rigidly set to permanent gage dimensions.
The supporting means for the cap 2, thus provided by securing its end in the bead 3, is reenforced to insure against the longitudinal displacement of the cap underpressures applied on either side thereof by including interlocking means between the bead 3 and the cap 2 formed from portions of the side wall 1 of the container and the wall 4 of the cap, and consisting of an inwardly directed recess 9 impressed in the side wall 1 and an outwardl projecting portion A10 in the wall 4 formedY to it tightly and to seat in the recess 9.
The closurel formed as thus described provides a tight seal impenetrable to the ingress of moisture or foreign matter into the can or the egress of the contents thereof, and may be used as a top closure for a container having any suitable bottom closure, or, ,as illustrated in the drawings, it may be used as a permanent closure for both ends of the container, in which case the contents would be hermetically sealed. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a container, a hollow member, and a closure therefor having a wall portion folded together with the wall portion of said hollow member at an end thereof to form a 1n coge of the bead; and the other of saidfolded portions being secured in said bead between the core and the outer part of the other of said folded portions.

In a container, a hollow member, and a closure therefor having a transverse portion and an outer wall portion disposed adjacent to the wall portion` of said hollow member at an end thereof; one of the inner contiguous parts of said wall portions having a recess therein receiving the other of the inner conti guous parts for precluding longitudinal displacement of said closure; and the outer contiguous parts of said wall portions being folded inwardly together to form a bead disposed in spaced relation to said transverse portion one of said foldedportions including reversely folded parts providing` a double hem constituting a core; and the other of said a reversely folded hem constituting the 3.
