IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,963, dated November 16, 1875 application filed August 28, 1875.
To allwhom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EZRA GROWELL, of
Belfast, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvementin Clothes-Founder, of which the following is a specification:
Figure lis a vertical longitudinalV section Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, part of the piston being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the washing-machine for which Letters Patent No. 158,039 were granted to me December 22, 187 4, so as to make -it more `eiective in operation.
` The inventionwill first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the case of the machine, which is made in the form of a hollowT cylinder, with its lower end open. To the upper edge ot' the cylinder A is attached a metallic conical head, B, in the apex of which is formed a hole, in which is secured a short tube, C, of sufficient size to receive the handle D. The lower end ot' the tube C projects a little into the cavity ot' the conical head B, to prevent any water from spati'ering out around the handle l). To the lower end ofthe handle D is attached ,the piston E, which is made in the form of a short hollow cylinder, with a tube passing through its center, in which is secured the end of the handle D. The cylinder E is made of such a size as to t into the cylinder A, and in its side is formed an opening, of such a size as to allow soap to be put into the cavity of the pistonthrough it. The edges of theheads of the piston E project a little beyond its side to form a seat for the band F, which passes around the said piston, and has a hole formed in it corresponding with the hole through the side of the piston, so that the said hole may be covered and uncovered by turningthe said band. In the lower head of the piston E are formed 'a number of small holes, e', to allow the soap to escape upon the clothes just below the piston. G is a coiled spring, placed upon the handle D, and the lower end of which rests upon the conical head B. The upper end of the coiled spring G rests against a cup collar, H, placed upon the handle D, and secured in place by a pin passed through the said handle above the said collar. In the upper part of the case A is formed a vent, a', to allow any water to escape that may find its way above the piston7 and to allow the air to pass in and out as the piston moves up and down. The vent a is covered upon the outer side by a cap or hood, I, having an opening in its lower end.
Having th us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent a The piston E, made hollow, with an opening in its side and perforations in its lower head,.and provided .with a movable band, F, having a corresponding opening in its side, to adapt it to operate as an automatic soap-applier when the machine is in use, substantially as herein shown and described.
EZRA GROWELL. Witnesses:
