CABLE WRAPPER.
Application filed June 20, 1927. Serial No. 200,003.
The present invention relates to improvements generally in means for cutting a cable and has particular reference to a wrapper for a cable to be cut whereby the strands of the cable are prevented from spreading. The wrapper described in this specification is particularly intended to be used in connection with a cable cutter such as described and claimed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 153,271. The object of the invention is to provide a wrapper that may be easily applied at the exact spot where the cable is to be cut and that ma be firmly secured on the cable by the use of very simple tools. F urther objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the specification proceeds.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figures 1 to 4 illustrate the wrapper and various stages in its application to a cable.
While I have shown only the preferred form of the invention, it should be understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
My wrapper consists of a thin sheet 1 of bendable sheet metal having one of its edges bent into a V shape seam as shown at 2 and being of sufficient width that the remainder of the sheet will completely encircle the cable, while leaving a small edge portion on the opposite side adapted to be introduced into the V as illustrated in Figure 2. After the sheet has thus been placed around the cable, a pair of pinchers may be used for clamping the sides of the V upon the opposite edge as shown in Figure 3. Thereafter the cable is placed upon a firm support, and the. three thicknesses of the V and the enclosed opposite edge are turned over the body of the sheet, preferably by means of a hammer as illustrated in Figure 4.
After the wrapper has been applied to the cable in this manner the strands of the cable are firmly held together and when the cable is out by means of a cutter such. as described in my co-pending application, each of the two ends thus formed will present a nice and clean appearance due to the fact that the wrapper prevents the strands of the cable from spreading.
I claim 1. A wrapper adapted to be wound around a cable to prevent spreading of strands when cutting the cable comprising a sheet of material bent along one edge to form a V whereby the opposite edge can be received therein when the sheet is wrapped around the cable.
2. The method of cutting a cable which comprises winding about the cable a sheet of material having a seam at one edge, introducing the opposite edge of the sheet into the seam, interlocking the edges, and cutting the cable through the sheet.
